Hmmm... This may sound like an odd question, but have you made certain that stu_fs2.vp is in your directory.
Secondly, make sure you have either all 4 speakers plugged in, or the sound set to 2 speakers.
They may sound like stupid suggestions, but best to start at the obvious and move from there ;)

Sounds to me like a Home of the Underdogs download or a corrupt stu_fs2.vp file to me. Either way have a look at my HotU FAQ and follow the link from there to the Freespace FTP server and get it from there.

I'm getting good at spotting people with the HotU download by now :) It's easy if you know what problems to look for :)

Unlike most game communities we don't mind people using the HotU download even if some would consider it piracy. FS2 has been out of print for a long time so we welcome newbies even if they didn't buy their copy cause quite often they are willing to but just can't find one.

Yeah, thats the problem I have, I would buy it but no one has a copy anywhere. I had it once but traded it because I was young and had no money. Now I want to play it again. when you download the files from the ftp to you just extract them to the freespace folder (overwriting the small 1-5k files?) and then the in game voices and briefings should work?

I've not tried the HotU version myself. From what I understood you may need to look in the Freespace2\data subfolders (especially voice) and remove the placeholder .wav files in there to make the real ones work.

I gave a few more details about that in my FAQ on how to do it.

No need to extract.  Just put the whole VP in the main FS2 directory. :)

You don't need to extract them.

But you may need to check the filenames of anything you delete depending on the way they are organised in the data folder.
The problem is basically this. The HotU build has a load of blank .wav files for all of the speech in the game. These are used in preference to anything in the .vp

My advice is to try this first. If you have a data\voice folder try removing it outside of your freespace2 folder.

If that works I'll re-write the FAQ a little to make it more clear. If it doesn't have a look for a file called 1_ADC.wav and tell me in which folder it is. The file itself isn't important but it will tell me where the voice files actually are located.

Aha :) I'll edit the FAQ. Be sure to tell me if you find anything has gone missing. All the files you disposed of were probably only 1 or 2k in size anyway right?

No offense Eva but you do realise you can have X-wing vs Tie now with FS2? The SW team released a skirmish pack that also has a y-wing and a Star Destroyer...

Personally I would like to have a place to upload my opt conversions that are non-cannon and not being used by the team for the community to use if so desired.
