Title: Freespace 2 re-release
Post by: penguin on January 31, 2004, 08:01:12 pm
I can't believe it hasn't been posted here already, but I didn't see a topic about it, so maybe not...  Here's the story on slashdot, (http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/01/31/0136202&mode=thread&tid=127&tid=186&tid=206) which links to many VolitionWatch (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com) areas, and mentions the icculus port, (http://www.icculus.org/freespace2/) but not the SCP :(

Since my two-year-old mangled my fs2 cd box and the cds themselves are getting a little scratchy (this is my six-year-old's doing - he plays it a lot), I'd consider getting this "special edition."  Although $49.95 seems a little steep, this is as important a "collectors edition" to me as an autographed baseball is to people who care about such things... Maybe I can get DaveB to sign it...

I wonder - are Dave and company gonna get something out of the deal?  They're the ones that deserve it...

edit
Here's the pre-order link to the Interplay Store (http://www.interplay-store.com/product.asp?part_no=FG-W58-1176-1&find%5Fcategory=&find%5Fdescription=&find%5Fpart%5Fdesc=&IPPC=ipnav) to pre-order it.

test for response to see if a community is there to accept a possible FSthr...... ehhh... NEWER FS.

If you havent noticed, its 10 on their top 10 sellers list. Good news imo.

Yeah.

They'll probably all be gone before they even come in stock.:)

*weeps*

Shipping to Canada is $30 (60% of the game).

Unless someone in the US is willing to buy a copy for me (and me paying for UPS shipping to me), I won't be getting this.

Only downside is that they paste a 20th aniversary sticker on it to justify selling a game from 98 for top dollar. Regardless, im getting it

Seconded. This looks like a definite prelude to a.. err... what he said.

I'll be finding some way to get ahold of this. $50 well spent. :P

While I for one, would like to see another FS game, I don't think I trust interplay to develop it........ Their in-house teams don't really do the greatest games.

If we where going to see another game, I hope interplay tries to get Volition do do it for them again.

Regardless the course any kind of descendant would take we should make sure the progress and experience of SCP is passed onto the developers whoever they are.

Can't be done.

A) [V] said no profit could be made off of it.

B) A new law passed says that ANY program with even a SINGLE line of open-source code in it MAKES it open-source.
Title: Freespace 2 re-release
Post by: DeepSpace9er on February 02, 2004, 06:31:31 pm
There are only 2000 copies up for grabs apparently, well 1999 as far as i know now

I think there are 20 campaigns maybe playermade, maybe not so thats the real deal difference.

EDIT: A new Freespace 2 page? Or has it been moved for a while now?

Not sure if it was passed or not yet, but I remember reading it in Time :)

The thing is, though, with this on the horizon, and possibly huge legal battles over open-source, I doubt Intercrap would risk a release with open-source code.

It's pointless to get, tho.
You can get:

A) FS2 for free.

B) The updated FS2 for free.

C) and all the new crap that they're adding in---for free!

The first two things, yes, but how do we all know for 100% that the new content isn't actually new content, that has never been seen before? I know that chances that [V] put together a new mission set are slimmer than slim, but there is still that chance. Or they might just put some omitted missions in, or release the Colossus OEM mission set with it.

You are talking about Interplay here.

Remember ST?

Six (right?) craptastic missions, and everything else was stolen from the community.

Post by: DeepSpace9er on February 03, 2004, 03:31:51 pm
If you look at the picture of the box real carefully Unknown, it says "20 Additional Missions included!." Now some of these could be Templar, or those expansion missions from a patch a long time ago, or they could be 20 new missions designed for the 20th aniversary of Interplay. Im starting to think its the former though.

Regardless if there is new content or not, I still want the CDs, the mve Cutscenes... ALL of them, and an item that will gain lots of value over the next few years. If you buy 2 copies, in a year you could sell the second copy brandnew on ebay for 3-4 times as much.

Colossus had the first 10 or so missions from FS2. Nothing new.

I just pulled out my box, the "Sci-Fi Sim of the Year Edition."  It has identical graphics to what's on the Interplay web store, and it also has the "Includes Over 20 additional missions!"  In the case of the sim of the year edition, this was the Templar campaign, and some others SP and MP missions.

I (sadly) agree with your guess that there will be no additional content -- not any new eye candy on the box.  I'll probably still buy it, and hide the receipt from my wife ;-)

Oh..... I have just heard scant few things here and and there about the Colossus OEM missions, and, I assumed, that it had you doing something more directly related to the Colossus....

I would have thought it would make more sense to let people who don't have the game, buy it instead of people who already have it, gobbling up all the copies. That way the community could be expanded upon, with fresh faces and talent joining it. That's not to say that all 2000 copies will be sold to previous owners by any means, but it is some food for thought.

On theother hand, several hundred existing community copies being sold would help boost Interplay's sales potential figures, and perhaps extend the run past 2000 copies.

when I first heard of this I kept checking the store so I could get a copy.

Now that I can get it, I decided I wont because of the price...

50 bucks I'd pay, but 30 dollars shipping to canada? I don't think so...

That is about 106 dollars for an old game. And let's face it, the SCP is a much better version.

I like the SCP in every way except the piss poor fps im getting with the latest version. 10 fps when in open space, 2 fpm when a small cruiser comes into view.

But you didn't specify which amount was Canadian and which was U.S.  Without any other information, one would assume that the amounts are both Canadian or both American.  Either way there's a problem. :)

Help me keep my job people.. BUy it from schoolpop.com (if you live in the US) that way when they run out they will order more disks from us to burn... At least that will give me an hour or 2 of work to do. I've been sent home a lot lately for lack of work (happens this time of year for this company)

I've also mauled interpray about the possibilitility of shipping to sweden. still waiting for answer.

Post by: ionia23 on February 09, 2004, 11:38:43 am
I ordered it within a few minutes of it coming up on the Interplay store.   As one of many FS fans, I think it's a worthwhile investment.  If all 2000 copies went quickly they might be more open-minded to possibilities best not mentioned in this forum....

Okay, so no bonus goodies, but seeing as what it's gone for used on Ebay, I think it's a worthwhile investment.  Plus my originals are trashed and I never got the Sim Of The Year edition.

Plus, it's a numbered release.  And I got a very very very low one :D

Slight problem - they won't ship it to Europe or the UK (at least, that's what they told me when I emailed 'em). Anybody know about a place that might? Given that I never actually bought the game, I'm not worried about paying for it - I've got enough out of it to easily warrant the (slightly extortionate) price.

Man, we all must be pretty damned oblivous here, wondering what content the re-release will have, if there is any more missions etc.... And, well, here is a quote from the discreption on the interplay store...

Quote
Due to popular demand we are re-releasing a limited production run of the "Sci-Fi Sim of the year edition" of Freespace 2 available only at our online store.

So, ummm, yeah..... I think that we all neeed to learn how to read.
