Title: Terrestrial Planet Name
Post by: Pegasus V on February 05, 2004, 12:03:18 am
If a planet was discovered (say a decade from now by the Terrestrial Planet Finder telescope) and was shown to be able to support life, what would you like it to be named?

eg.

God Names: Apollo, Prometheus, etc
Geographical Names: New Australis, New Mesopotamia, etc
Classical Names: Terra Nova, Earth 2, etc
Biblical Names: Eden, etc
Legendary Names: Hercules, Qin, Atlantis, etc
Pioneer Names: Gagarin, Armstrong, etc
Appearance Names: Shoalhaven, Greenville, etc

I'm interested in your opinion or any other suggestions you may have. Thanks.

Completely unrealated to your main topic, but I checked your FSURP link, and that FSURP is definately true to the nature of the one originally made years ago.

A good list of canon info from the games. Mixed in with info from some of the other lists made (such as ships destroyed in FS1/2, when the techs were available to the player, etc.) it would be a great resource.

It's also good to see the Serkr warhead getting some notice :) (random speculation with no basis: An early Meson bomb prototype?)

As for a new planet, the name will most likely be sold to help pay for the space program. Welcome to planet Halliburton anyone?

Peg! You're back!
*Thought you'd gone for good*

Are you planning on sticking around?

As for the name, it's depend on a lot of things - would the TPF be entirely automated, or require human operators/data interpreters? If the latter, the person who first realized the planet was there'd probably name it. Alternately it'd probably get "##Name of Star## Prime" until a bit more was known about it, and a more suitable name could be chosen.

I'd really like to see a new human world named Armstrong, if only to remember the first man to set foot on a celestial body.  But if we ever get arround to terraforming mars, the name of the first human on Mars would also be nice.

PS: Welcome Back!

Blasphemy! :p

But really, the name of the planet would probably be up to the country(or organization) that found it. I doubt Australia would. ;)

I think there'd probably be a different set of conventions for each system. It's gods for Sol - possibly mythical places? So you'd have Valhalla, Atlantis, Elysium, etc.

why not the name of the person who discovered it?  Isn't it how it is now when a new meteor is found or something?

IF not, then I go for what demon said.

Call it Taros 334 or the like so that NASA scientists can have wet dreams about saying 'Set course for Taros 334, Warp 3'.

It just sounds right :P

in all honesty I think we have a nameing coonvention for this,
name of star-position in system, so if it's the fourth planet in the Vega system it would be called Vega-4

Yes, that's correct :) I'm not sure whether Star Trek got it from Nasa, or vice versa, but I think we are stuck with it now :)

Turnsky beat me to it! PLANET BOB (from the cult of the subgenius)

Actually even if it had life on it, if we were technologicly superior we would enforce whatever values we wanted. That includes naming it... Humans are like that, look at the Native Americans. Three was no such thing AS a Native American until columbus claimed an INDIAN contenant and then only the settlers born there could be considered "native Americans". I don't know the various indiand names but I am sure they simply called the US "the land" or something along that vein...

Sorry but to me that is like one of the greatest insults you could inflict upon a people, taking away their identy and forcing them to adopt someone else's values.

(Warning South Park reference needed to decipher rest of post)

How would you like it if the Marklars came here and started telling you how your Marklar is no longer Marklar, but rather should be called Marklar. See? YOU wouldn't think it's very Marklar of the Marklars to rename YOUR marklar right? You'd be like "Hey you Marklars! Get the Marklar off our Marklar, and take your stupid Marklars and stick them up your Marklar!"

I rest my case., er, I mean Marklar! :p

W00T with the South Park, original ground-breaker and still funny.

Even if we find a habitable world tomorrow, Mars is still out of the question and leaving the solar system is at least half a century off.  I say, until we can get there, don't bother to change the default NASA name.

Planet Thingy.

Thingy is a great word.  Imagine how much more interesting life would be if we only had 3 nouns - thingy, thingybob and thingygummy.

I'm just going to the thingummy with thingy and thingybob, we're going to get some thingummies and then were going back to thingybobs to thingy.

That would rock.

If we're having so much trouble thinking up a name for just one planet, how are we going to name the billions of planets when we colonize them all in the very-or-not-so-very distant future? :P

Omicron Delta
Beta Cygnus
Endor?
