Post by: Corsair on February 06, 2004, 09:00:36 am
I'm looking for a computer game to get my brother for his birthday, and I figured you guys might have some suggestions. What do you think are the best games out there right now that you play??

Thanks.

I wouldn't get Max Payne 2 unless you've got the first one. I couldn't make head nor tail of the storyline so I went out and bought the first on.

Need For Speed Underground is pretty good if you're after a car racing game.

How much do you love your brother? (i.e are we talking full price or budget game here? ) :D

And full price. Like, the new stuff. Budget games are good too though, if they're really good.

Maybe Homeworld 2.... :drevil:

Planescape: Torment is the BEST SP PC RPG that is not a port from some other system.  It's 2d as well, with music by Jeremy Soule.

Something new?  HW2 shouldn't be bad, XIII might be okay.  NWN Gold if he wants a newer RPG.

I never got on with planescape torment at all. Just couldn't get into it, which was a shame because I always hear how great it is.

XIII is a bit crap, tbh. Too console-y, unfortunately. Try any (or all) of these:

Call of Duty
Halo
Rise of Nations
No One Lives Forever/NOLF 2
AvP2
C&C: Generals

I second Call of Duty and Rise of Nations*.  Also KoToR.  Traclmania is a pretty good game, albeit hard to find.

*although there is an expansion pack due for RoN - it may be worthwhile to hold back iun this case and see if there's a reduction / bundling of the original

I'd recommend Hostile Waters as a great budget game :)

You can pick up the two Total War games quite cheap too :)

Good games I've played for PC

Halo; If the system supports it. Very fun MP. Infact if you don't get it for the single player, get it for the mp! :D
FreeSpace 2; Great game that kept me guessing til the end! Also many mods for it.
FreeSpace: The Great War; Another game that had me on the seat of my pants. Old, but good,
HardWar; Great game from about '98. Think Freelancer only with a much better storyline™.
Age Of Empires 2:The Conquerors; Old now, but still fun at times in my book.
Quake2; Just in case you just have the urge to just kill. MP I found was very annoying since it's plagued with bots and cheaters. :ick:
BattleZone 1 or 2; Great if you want a combo RTS and FPS.

Thief:The Dark Project; Thief 2: The Metal Age: The mothers of all 1st person sneaker games and they belong to my list of the best games ever. But be aware that if your brother is a homicidal maniac he might not be happy with those games since in some parts of the game you aren't allowed to kill any person at all!:D

Freelancer : A rather good space game. It's not as good as older games from the genre like Privateer but I had a lot of fun with it.

Wing Commander Prophecy : One of the best space simulation games ever made. Not as good as the older WC's but the only game from this series where you still have a chance of getting it without being involved in a crime.

Freespace 1&2 : 'nuff said.:D

Battlefield 1942 : Notmally I don't like multiplayer games, but this one was good.

1.) FS2 - but since you have it, it doesn't matter

2.) Halo - halo ROCKS. who cares its from microsoft, this game makes up for all the crap games they have made so far (except a few)

3.) Warcraft III - not too sure about this, but i heard its good

4.) Battlefield 1942 - possibly as fun as Halo, 'cept its MP mostly. Hop onto a plane and go KAMIKAZE!!

5.) Armada 2 - again, not too sure of this...C&C Generals is waay better i think

6.) Red Alert 1 - if you can get this, then kudos for you. RA1 held some of the best fun for me when it came to RTS

7.) Civilization 3 - for hours of non-stop fun.
