This week I have spent in the pursuit of gaming nirvana. My mission was utterly successful, I now have in my possession the finest piece of gaming hardware ever concocted by mortal man; a Snes.
Also via ebay I have managed to obtain:
Zelda - Link to the past
Mariokart
Mario World and Allstars (one cart, I didn't even know it was released until I saw it up for auction)
Cybernator
and last but not least by any stretch of the imagination Streetfighter2 Turbo.
I spent this afternoon playing and finishing the sublime platform excellence of Super Mario Bros. 1 and then the first three worlds in the impossibly good Super Mario Bros. 3.
I think that if everyone had a snes there would be world peace. Except when playing bomberman with three of your mates, that's the equivalent of a domestic missile crisis.
I am deeply contented.

-
How much did that set you back?
-
mmmm... the snes is indeed one of the greatest platforms ever. Square's best games are on there, FF3, ChronoTrigger... I'll just have to settle for snes 9x
-
Guess we've seens the last of the green one for a while. Those are some of the very best games on the bestest console of all time. All you want now is Starfox, Mario World and Stunt Race FX.
On a side note, I saw a GBA SP up close today. It rules.
-
*chants* star fox, star fox, star fox *chants*
-
You know, I spent most of my school years playing Starfox but only reached the black hole last year... random fact for you there
-
Actually I'm quite annoyed at myself for forgetting that I already have starwing, it's my favourite game for the Snes actually. D'oh.
Mario world is built onto the mario allstars cart and stunt race FX wasn't my cup of tea. As for not seeing me for a while; I'm not having too much of a good thing so although I gorged myself on Mario for the best part of this afternoon/evening. I'm going to keep it as a reward for my university achievements.
Costs, lets see
One fully working, quite great nick Snes was £15 with two pads.
Zelda was £10.50
Mariokart was £12.50
Cybernator was £4.30
StarWing was £4.75
SF2 turbo was £6.50
Allstars + world was £6.52
And I got a Super gameboy for £5.50. (just for my collection)
I'm on the lookout for bomberman 1 (damn rare + the best IMHO) and a multitap but failing that I'll Build a blank cart and write the games I want. The only problem is getting the correct memory which thus far has been a pain to track down. I have to mention that I was actually quite downhearted when I first looked into the average cost of zelda and mariokart, copies were selling for up to £40 a piece but I got both for less than £15. I gues Ebay just lucks out sometimes.

The RF connector for my old SNES is dying. The multi-cable the came with it disappeared a few years ago so I had to switch to emulators for my old games.

You mean as in Super Mario World? As in the one set on Dinosaur Island, with Yoshi the cape feather and ****?
-
AKA the best platform game in existence (bar possibly Viewtiful Joe, it wouldn't suprise me if this game was lovingly handcrafted by god himself).
-
Is Pitfall for the SNES, too? That was a great platformer.
Anyway, Starfox was fun, I got thru half of it in, like, a week, but it was great fun :D The new one is crap, tho, too easy.
-
I would debate the SNES being the 'greatest gaming hardware' ever created. The 16bit era was won by the Mega Drive/Genesis, if only for Sonic the Hedgehog 2.....
-
Pfft, SNES stomped Genesis in every way, shape, and form. Sonic 2 was good, but there's a long list of SNES games that topped that one.
-
No Super Metroid??? IMO one of the best games ever, it kicks ass.
-
Yeah the Bomberman/Multitap combo are exceedingly rare, as I only found mine when it was new. I was pleased to discover, however, that Secret of Mana (Square's other all-time great game) would actually register the thrid controller and let each character get their own seperate player to control them. Boy, does having real people play a sudo-RPG game in tandem change the way you play.
-
Ah yes...the SNES...some of my best gaming experiences were on that.
Absolutely loved FF- mystic quest, the Zelda games and yes, even the Mario bro games on that :D
-
SNES owns all the other consoles. :D I still have my modded SNES (plays both Japanese and English cartridges) around to play FF4/5/6 and a bunch other classics.
Maeg, if you find out any more about the custom cartridges can you post the info here? That'd be really useful as I've heard memory cartridges can die out as they age. *wants to use his SNES eternally*

That works great in an action RPG like Mana. Not so great in a game like Chronocross or FF10.

Gotta cut back on the bittorrent addiction.
-
Lol, awesome catch you got there Maeg. ;) Bit disappointed at the exclusion of any Metroid games and Chrono Trigger is also conspicuous by its absence, but you still got a very impressive suite there. :D
-
my SNES collection:
Cybernator
Probotector
Cannon Fodder
F-Zero
Castlevania (remember that ?)
(original) Street Fighter 2
Desert Fighter (similar to D. Strike)
Zelda
Aleste
Axley
Syndicate
Mario World
Mario Kart
Batman returns (the best Beat 'em Up to get a proper releas in blighty)
I had Metroid but gave it to a mate 'cos I dont like it.
I think the average price I paid for each is about £10.
I'm after Shadowrunner and Desert Strike at the mo.
-
There's Cannon Fodder on the SNES?
Man, I spent months on that game. Accursed lack of save feature. :doubt:
-
Heh Heh. Doesn't have the Theme song but I couldn't afford a PC at the time.
I borrowed Starwing off a mate recently and didn't like it, I remember spending ages on it though originally. I also remember it cost like £60 new. Product of it's time and all that..

I have the gameboy colour one lying around somewhere.... still looks hist-hot - has the theme song, a pre-rendered intro and even a 3d options screen. Pretty astonishing for the hardware.

Yep yep, as I said I didn't even know it existed until I saw this: (http://www.3dap.com/hlp/staff/maeglamor/mario.jpg)
Kamakaze: I'm currently talking to a guy about this, did I already show you the link for the Multi console copier? (http://chn.roarvgm.com/mcc/mcc.html)
The guy I'm talking to is working on a more manageable system but he's still working the tweaks out. Anyhow, the memory on the MCC is fairly commonplace RAM, it would be reasonably easy to replace and should have a long lifetime.

-
Wow. Some sort of special edition. I presume that cart came in a console bundle?
In any case, go buy a Super Scope
-
No idea, as for a superscope; the only thing that is good for is slapping someone else who took your pad. ;)

*looks at the MCC hooked up to a SNES*
...:wtf:...my snes doesn't look like that...
...Is that the japan SNES console?
This is what mine looks like: (http://www.tbonejones.com/snes.jpg)
...going through google I've found about 3 or 4 different SNES console types! That's insane!
My SNES games:
Zelda: Link to the past
Super Mario World
Super Return of the Jedi (semi-sorta cool)
Desert Strike
Stanley Cup (Ya! Hockey!!!)
StarFox

*Points to the sales figures in the US particularly*
The Genesis outsold the SNES in the US and to a lesser extent in the UK. Japan doesn't really count as most people who had one tended to have the other.
I'm not denying that the SNES was a good machine, as it brought Starfox into the world, I just prefer the Mega Drive (to use the proper name), if only for the fact that it has Sonic 2, possibly the greatest classical platformer of all time! :D

That's a picture of what they called the prototype in France, if I remember correctly :D
In France, we have the version you see on that copier thing page.

Yep, that's the US model. The UK one was a nicer more rounded shape - i think the same as the Japanese oner. IIRC the joypad buttons were also red, green, yellow and blue.
-
That's right. I've got a Japanese model, it's not as good for bashing people up with.
-
There're 3 types of SNES that I know about.
There's the boxy, US version. (http://outerspace.terra.com.br/retrospace/materias/consoles/imagens/parte26/snes.jpg)
The rounded, non-US version.(http://www.emulatronia.com/maquinadeltiempo/fotos/snes/snes.jpg)
And the rounded, US version. (http://www.cnn.com/interactive/computing/0010/playstation.timeline/timelineimages/snes.jpg)
Maeg: Sweet, inform us when you get more info please :D
-
Ahh the good 'ol days with the Super Nintendo. Donkey Kong is still a classic :).
-
You know, I always wondered what that random colored thing was that appeared on most of the cartridges, but now I see. That little collor predecessor to the MSN butterfly isn't on the US consoles, nor was it ever associated with the system over here.
-
I just got Desert Strike on ebay for 99p.
Hurray for me!
-
Kick arse magatsu1, great game.
Got myself a multitap and I'm now on the prowl for a copy of bomberman 1 which seems to be a bit of a rarity. Here's hoping.
On a slightly different topic: SF2 turbo came today, I couldn't execute a fireball for 30 mins which was a bit of a downer considering how much time I spent playing it as a kid. Got it nailed now though. ;)
Next on the list is dragon punch training. Must be in fighting form (pun intended) when I get the mates around for a bit of a tournament.
BTW anyone else of the opinion that the american SNES is a bit of a monster compared to the rest of the world's SNES's, which are frankly game vixens.

-
Yes, the US SNES was / is a mess.
-
I'm after Bomberman myself. This thread has got me buying games again.
I bet SF felt really slow as well eh Meag. ?
I used to switch between the original and Alpha2 and couldn't believe the difference.

Shame on you sir. that is a thing of beauty.
-
Ahhhh.,... The SNES.... when the games didn't feel like you could finish them in a day. Nowadays its all about graphics and not about gameplay...
Dragon punch: the easiest way I could do it was pushing right, then do the fireball (down, diag down-right, right). Would happen every time.

 So many exciting prospects. :D You know, here's a thought; don't practise too much before you set up the tournament. It'll be more fun for you and everybody else. I had a friend who owned SF2 Turbo, and he totally practised every day and beat the game six hundred ways backwards; and any time one of us would try to play him, he would totally achieve a perfect victory every round, and it completely sucked! There was no competition. If you possibly can, be equals with the guys you're playing - makes for more excitement. :D
-
yeah, training changes everything. Last year, about a month after I bought it, nobody could beat me at DOA3 anymore. I've stopped paying for a few months, then we start again, and there you go: I lose more than I win now :p ( most frustrating, actually :p ).
-
I'm not much of a naturally talented gamesplayer, my friend paul has a 3:1 win average on me in almost every game especially beat em up's so I stopped trying to win and started concentrating on seeing what I could get away with in a match.
Stuff like trying the same move three or four times, you'd be surprised how often I land the move. ;)
Anyhow, sorry to say it magatsu but I'm in direct competition with you for that copy of bomberman. ;) As for SF2 feeling slow it's 10 star turbo mate (use the cheat to up the speed) it's blinding fast. I'm already working on wiring a 50/60 Hz switch anyhow so it's all academic anyhow.
Got me multitap and zelda today and I'm now waiting on killer instinct. Woo and yea again. :D

-
Heh, had a feeling it might be you.
The Desert Strike seller has let me down, so I'm after that again.
-
Gah! After cracking my snes open (I made a custom bit to get those blimmin security screws out) I found that it was one of the 1chip versions that was released later in the SNES's lifetime. This basically means that I can't perform the 50/60 Hz conversion modification. Ah well, I'll just have to do it to the next snes I buy. :)
Seems we both got beaten to bomberman Magatsu, I wasn't exactly up for paying 21 quid for it anyway. Oh well, more coming up all the time so we'll see what happens. :)

-
oh, I thought metroidd21 was you. No way I was gonna go above £20 though
I've got bigger fish to fry than bomberman anyway. (hehheh)
-
Nah my handle on Ebay is jimmyninja, my nick from the counterstrike days.

-
The only reason I went above £15 for bomberman 'cos I thought it was you and we had a sort of grudge match going on!!
I've a good couple of days with some cool games on my watch list too
Piccies to follow hopefully.
That username sounds familiar. Do you remember someone called "chunky" ?

My father was addicted to Bomberman (so was I to an extent) Great game for sure! You can get on the computer i think tho :/
-
Not only that, but you can get it for GameBoy too.

Replace the {} with []
BTW how much did shadowrun cost, seemed to be quite a rarity and much sought after.
Personally I got a copy of yoshi's island, flashback and a converter.

-
By God Yoshi's Island was good. Possibly better than Super Mario World, and that's saying a lot as SMW is widely regarded as the finest 2D platformer in existence
-
(http://uploadit.org/magatsu1/Shadowrun.jpg)
cost £25 all in for the cart, no box etc. I'm not bothered about boxes or manuals though.
that's pretty much the most I'll pay for a SNES game.
I saw Secret of Mana (PAL) sell for about £20 recently. that seemed quite cheap.
I'm watching Bomberman 1&2 and King Arthur's World.
EDIT:Yay! the image worked! Thanks man.
-
scret of mana rocks. If you disregard the ending ( where I got stuck coz I didn't have enough keys and couldn't get back to city to get some.

I prefer Another World. Older, but better.

Another world was fiendishly frustrating, it really got to me after a while and I never played it much because of the pixel perfect jumps required.

The slugs, the slugs.
-
I liked Another World at first because it was quite unlike anything I'd ever experienced before. But I got to this giant sort of dam thingy and I couldn't figure out where to go next...
-
If it's what I'm thinking of then that was actually the bottom of a lake. You blow the bottom out with an overcharged blast, the caves flood and you spend the next few hours avoiding tentacle beasts whilst swimming around caves.
I loved that game.
-
OK, so someone point me at a good SNES emulator and some ROMs, cos I doub't I'll be able to find an Another World cart anywhere in town
[EDIT] Oo, look - a free PC version (http://www.classic-trash.com/gameinfo.php?id=367)!
-
you can probably find the PC version on the net.
-
I had it on the Amiga.
In fact, I think I have the rom for the Amiga version still. I miss my A1200.
-
*fires up Another World*
*sees Interplay logo*
*sighs*
*realises game has crashed*
What is it with that company?
-
Pretty cool site there DG.
Meh, can't get Syndicate and Cannon Fodder though:sigh:
-

Just got a copy of Bomberman for £7.01! Everybody around to my house in a few days for a destruction marathon. ;)

Hey, nice one Maeg! I envision much playtime for you in the near future. ;)
-
Another World, that's the time when a lone guy could still make a complete game by himself, and the game would be a hit...
-
Well you still can Nico with gameboy advance. Lots of ppl putting demos and small games on the net.

-
excepted by that time, Another World was like state of the art in the videogames industry, all with that rotoscoping technique and stuff.
-
Bomber man for £6 and King Arthur's World for £6 also.
Bit of a result 'eh ?
Hey Maeg, what's the deal with you and that toluene box ? :D

Hey Maeg, what's the deal with you and that toluene box ? :D
Some guy sent me a dreamcast packaged in a box that was used to ship toluene in, if you know anything about toluene it's a hydrocarbon used in the manufacture of TNT (tri-nitro-toluene) it's also a carnogen (cancer causing agent). The box was clearly labelled flammable and 'unsafe when empty'.
Didn't stop that muppet using it and then complaining when I rather graciously gave him neutral feedback and a fairly darn good reason why.
*shrugs*

-
what, you don't believe in recycling ?

keep it on youf coffee table. It could be a conversation point.

You've got a dreamcast now? Go get... oh man, I forget what it's called... fighting game with swords. Damn fun. :)
-
Had a dreamcast for months dude, best of the next generation consoles IMHO. The gamecube is just marginally behind.
Shenmue; if there were no other good games for that machine I'd buy it just to play Shenmue.
