I bought a new Maxtor 80GB HDD and a Rack (removable Docking module) for it. I needed the extra spce for my movies/music/stuff and I figure it's better than burning a cd...
So I put it as a Primary Slave, set it up in BIOS (everything looking o.k.). Fire up WindowsXP and go to Control Panel->Device Manager...Yep ..it's there, it's enabled...device working properly...
So I go to My Copmputer and..wtf?...no second HDD(fourth actually..my first drive is devided into 3 partitions) What?
Hell...I check Control Panel agin..it's there...
I click on Properties->Volume->Populate..sez Not initialized...
Does anyone know what the hell am I supposed ot do now?

format the drive, somehow, IIRC
-
Hmm...I'll take it over to my friends if everything else fails....

You will need to format the drive first before it'll be useable under Explorer. Right click on My Computer and select Manage. Open Disk Management and locate your new 80Gb drive on the bottom window (the graphical one) - it'll probably be called Disk 1. Right click where it shows the size and select Initialize. Then right click the Unallocated Space and select Create Partion. Run through the wizard. You should be able to accept the defaults for most of it. Use NTFS for the filesystem and the maximum size of the disk for the partion size to use the entire thing.
Half of that's from memory, so it might be a little vague. If you run into problems I can work out something more detailed. But whatever you do, don't do anything to your existing drive or you might risk losing data. :)

Thank you!
-
well it should still be visable under explorer, just not accesable (you try to open it it prompts you to format)
-
not if it isn't partitioned.
