Title: Homeworld 2 MOD?
Post by: Toblerone on February 07, 2004, 11:50:33 am
I apologize if this has already been brought up, but i've been away for a while... windows got screwed up bad like 3 times in a 2 week window, then i got HW2 so i got addicted...

Anyways, is anyone porting the HW2 ships to FS2?

I mentioned earlier that FABIO already extracted the ships and converted them to LWO format. They can be found at LWG.com I believe  (site of The Light Wave Group)... Unless you can make subobjects you are not gonna be able to convert 90% of the models as they are mostly one object and too big (average1500-200o polys)

That should work on FS2_open with HT&L though :)

You would think with all the smilarities shipwise between homeworld and freespace, there would have been a dozen and a half of mods for either game, based on the other one...

I've always found that the FS and HW communities are so interlinked, it's amazing to think that the two haven't been combined :D

Anyway, most HW fighters are below 1000 polies, according to Relic recommended poly counts, it's about 800 per fighter. That should be too hard to convert, and I really want to try out that big gun on the interceptor :D

You'd think.  While it is easy enough to convert FS ships for use in the original HW, modding them for use in HW2 is more difficult as there is no plugin available right now to get models into the right format easily.  That and about a half-million other things you have to do.  HW2 is getting about as much support from Sierra as FS2 got from Intercrap when it was released.  The "Modding Tools" are moderately useful, but generally a let down from what we were led to expect from communication with Relic before the game was released.:sigh:

Devils Hitman is indeed working on the FS2 into HW2 effort. HW2 into FS2 takes a bit more effort because of the higher quality models. However, with HT&L, things are now possible. :)

It is a little different, HW and Cataclysm use single part meshes for the most part.  HW2 uses multiple meshes to make up each LOD.  They are much higher poly count meshes than the earlier games, especially when the meshes are assembled.

I'm not sure how well a TC mod would work in FSO. RTS - gather, build, snooze, gather, build, send your little minions after the bad guys, repeat between cut scenes.  Space combat sim - launch, find bad guys, blow up said bad guys.

Still though, the HW universe is a pretty richly fleshed out one.  I can think of a few things...well after I finish another commitment lol.

awww, what a pitty, it'd be really sweet to fly around hw2 ships first person!

Can't wait to be able to build the Ravana in HW2, excellent work. Hope this project makes it.

Funny, i didn't noticed this thread before, I am actually planning to make a HW2 to FS2 conversion, i hope to have some ships in game in a few days.

For Hellbender, i don't really see those problems, first of all the objects in HW2 are not this much subdivided, it's only an hull+gobling (for lod0), plus subsistems for big ships, anyway completed models have been extracted and made avaiable for download long time ago.

Second, no, HW2 ships are not high-poly at all, what makes the details are the ultra detailed textures, i mean, 350 poly for a fighter (not 800) and around 1700(turrets and all) for a huge battleship don't seem a lot to me at all...don't really get why people keep saying HW2 ships have high polycount.

And for the mission types, hell, we aren't forced to recreate the tipical RTS scenario in FS2, whe can make the mission as elaborate as we want, just put them in the HW universe...

The Apocalypse Project, a HW/Cat to FS2 mod, is doing some of this. Plus with a new storline it will put TAP able to use HW2 ships and even some new ones inspired by HW.

Only problem is, things are moving so slow internally, and there are few there anymore that are active members, there was a post in the pub forums about new recruits... but I'm not sure if TAP will live much longer if lack of support deteriorates any further.

I'm not sure, and I don't speak for the leader, but maybe if someone else is considering making a HW2 mod, they could join TAP and make it along side TAP drawing upon the resources we have there and the few people who remain...

But yeh, check out the pub forums and post or pm me for further info...

Good luck anyways :D

wow, thats pretty impressive.

hey ryuune75, are you working on anything at the moment?

if not and your willing to help out, TAP is in some desperate need of new recruits...

checkout the forums in the hosted section...

Ryuune it's not that I'm not interested. I'd just rather see you team up with the TAP guys and get both projects finished more quickly.

The pics do look great though.

Hey, I'm not forcing anyone to be interested :)

The fact is that the TAP project did seem pretty much dead lately, and beside, it was about HW Cataclysm, not HW2, but as also Grug suggsted, i'll try contacting them.

For the speed, well, as i don't have to model the ships myself i don't think it will take alot of time to make a TC, i mean, converting a Fighter takes 15 minutes, big capitals take a little longer, cause turretting is a thing that i'll never learn to do properly :ick:

hmm, well TAP isnt dead, the main players in there wont let that happen, its just that the elorran has been hard pressed for time, and thus things slowed down big time...

But there is 1 or 2 of us still in there pushing things along.

I apoligise for the lack of updates, but there has been a slow moving internal discussion going on.

But as it stands, TAP will be getting a new face sooner or later. We are moving it forward to include some HW2 ships, and even some of our own custom designs... but yeh... (you didnt hear that from me ;p )

But I'm quite certain if some1 with enthusiasm came on board and took on a co-project role or something then TAP could either be adjusted to fit or you might see what TAP was planning on doing... :)

But yeh... drop by... I'm sure we can sort something out... :D

That's pretty much what I expected the reply from someone connected with TAP would be :)

Im think the TAP should stay with the HW1/Cataclysm theme. That was the original idea wasn't it ?
(I'm only saying this 'cos Iwanna see a Taidani Destroyer)
