I'm slowly transfering my FAQ over to the Wiki at the moment because that way it can be corrected and improved by people other than myself.
One problem with this though is that the FAQ on the HLP main page currently points to the HLP FAQ and there doesn't appear to be any link to the Wiki (or at least none I could spot easily)
I think the best thing to do at the moment would be to simply redirect the HLP FAQ to the Wiki page and move all the stuff in it to the Wiki too.
Anyone object to that?
Instead of the HLP FAQ, My own FAQ and all the stuff that Kasperl and the other SCP people have been adding it would make more sense to have everything in one central place.
We should be expecting quite a few newbies from the re-release of FS2 and it's a good idea to be prepared for them.
Speaking of the Wiki I'm having a small linking problem with it.
I want to link to http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,19514.0.html
but if you click on the link it sends you to http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/freespace/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19514
(Notice the missing ~)
Is there any way to link it correctly?

i would love to see this. i often have to point n00bs to the wiki through my title, and everyone who complains about the lack of info has never seen the wiki. also, please, make a few sticky's, stickyer then other sticky's if possible in the SCP forum.

I'm going to say this as someone who figured out FRED2, TrueSpace, PCS and all the rest - **** knows how editing that Wiki works
-
login with for example DiamondGeezer (one word, 2 caps are the key here) and a radnom password at firsty, or no pass at all. then click edit. that's how it works.
-
Er, yeah, I got that bit, thanks. I meant actually editing the pages. The instructions for coding links and what not made me blink and say 'you what?'
-
ok, just type the stuff like you are in notepad, link it here, and i'll see what i can do abhout lay-out. or, ask some specific questions and i'll see what i can explain. i'm doing 4 things at once right now, so i can;t rewrite the manual right now.
-
You got an answer to my question about the ~ disappearing though?
The Wiki doesn't seem harder to grasp than UBB code or simple HTML it's just that for some reason it's completely different to both.

/*Squashed together by Kasperl, and nomated by the same person for a complete makeover. /
/*Made prettier by Anaz Eron /
/*shouldn't the info in those FAQs be moved here at opportunity? kode asks.*/
//Ph Reak: I'm getting 404's it seems that the tilde isn't being interpreted.
//Ph Reak: Fixed Nov,18th '03. you need double tilde's if you are ever going to link to a thread on the forum
on the main SCP FAQ page.

and DG, iirc good ole HTML works too, sometimes.
-
Aha :). I'll go add that to the bit I was editing :)
-
please also add that to the wiki manual, to prevent repeating problems.
-
I think that the ideal solution to the double-FAQ problem is simple. Leave the HLP FAQ as an HLP FAQ, dealing with front page registration issues, who we are, etc. It should have one "Freespace" question, which should refer to the Wiki for the answer.
The Wiki, for its part, should be the be-all and end-all of all FS info.
-
That's fair enough but there should be a link on the front page really. How about HLP FAQ and Freespace FAQ links instead. The first points to the existing FAQ and the second to the Wiki.
It's not just newbies who need to use the wiki more either. Many of the questions asked on here can be answered by stuff in the Wiki but without a direct link most people simply come onto the forum and ask. Hell until last week when I remembered to bookmark it I used to get to the wiki when I needed it by finding a post by Kasperl and clicking on his title  :D
-
Nah, I think I'd rather have links to the "HLP FAQ" and to the "FreeSpace Wiki"... calling them both FAQs is confusing, especially since the Wiki is not a FAQ at all, it's a knowledge base.
-
The problem is that most people who come to the site for the first time won't know what a Wiki is. :)
We see all the people who can't find an answer and post but we don't know how many come here can't find an answer and wonder off without posting.
Call it the Freespace Knowledge Base and putting a link directly below the FAQ would be fine with me though.
