I think Homeworld (and its sequel) is one of the best game out there, in particular the HW2 ships are uber-cool looking.
For that reason I'm planning to make a HW2 --> FS2 conversion (there is already a FS2 --> HW2 conversion in progress); I already have the ships extracted from HW2, then it's a simple matter of converting them, so i can probably make the TC all by myself, but i'd like to know if someone is interested in helping me, especially in the fields of turretting and freddign, 2 things i'm not very good at.
What do you guys think?

No, he means to put Homeworld ships into Freespace 2 (I always got confused about the "to" bit). Anyway, it's not being done.
Good luck, altho you will have some probs, as I heard that HW2 uses more than one model for each ship model.

I think it does, from certain angles the turrets can be seen to be separate from the ship.

I'm curious about conversion work. Are there proggys knockin' about that allow people to read and extract model/texture etc files ?
Or do you haved to write them youself ?

I believe someone called Fabio has converted the entire fleet to Lightwave already. That would probably be an easier starting point.

The tools to extract models and textures from HW2 were made long time ago, so many people have done that (i believe that Fabio was the first one to do that)
As i told i have already all the models i need to do a FS2 mod, i only need to convert them to pof, the only difficult thing will be making all the turrets to work for the capships
The models of HW, despite what most people say, are very low poly, and are generally made of one mesh (plus lods and goblins); of course mothership have a modular design for subsystem, but i can just glue them toghether, i don't see any problem in that.

I Dl'ed the Fabio set and 90% of them need to be sub-objected (as a single mesh has well over 850 pollies per ship,some up to 3000). That's why I posted that single Hiigaran Intercepter conversion 3 months ago and quit. I can't break them down (also no tutorials) so I will be VERY interested in your final results (as I like about 10 or so ships in HW2).

Well, of course most ships are over 850 polyes, and the Higaraan "Banana 2" is a wopping 10000 poly, but my plan is to make the mod for FSO, i really don't bother about vanilla FS2 anymore... but still, cutting a ship in 3 parts under 800 poly takes no more than 15 minutes of work.

WOW....very nice. Keep working on that, I'd love to see a HW2 TC.
EDIT: Oh, and after my exams (in 5 weeks), you can count me in as a Fredder (and maybe glow-/shinemapper)

Well, a fredder is really needed, when it comes to making missions what i produce is totally crap :no:
btw, the Vaygr battlecruisr is already fully armed :) (custom weapons)
also, can someone explain me why if i model a turret in Truespace all is ok, but if i import an existing turret model i can't make FS2 recognize it as a turret??? :ick: I'm trying to make the original turrets on the higaaran battlecruiser to work but i'm not able to!

Take apart the existing turret model and reglue it. That's the best way to make sure it was built correctly. The names are also important if you want PCS autogen to work correctly. If you need help there is a tutorial in my FAQ.

Of course i know your FAQ, that's where is started :)
But i do just that, i import the model, name it correctly, etc...all the things i do when i model a turret from scratch, then in PCS and Modelview all looks ok, but when i start the game (but Fred too) the sub-object simply isn't recognized as a turret... :sigh:

Ok i managed to do it, thanks anyway... i now have another problem, every tool i have just crash if i try to convert more than 5000 poly ships, i tryed cob2fs2, modelview, PCS...

Check the Latest Versions of Everything thread in the SCP forum for a version of PCS which should be capable of converting higher limit ships.
IIRC it has the same version number as the last version of PCS before it so don't let that confuse you.

I think the MOD is looking fantasitc... looks just like HW2 when I view it from my fighter squadrons... excellent!

That mod is mostly dead, as stated by his creator... :doubt:
btw, i wasn't actually working on a HW2 total conversion, i only converted a few ships just to see how they looks like in FS2, if someone is interested i can work on this a little more, but probably helping out the Apocalypse project guys... i can't do a TC all by myself.

Looks like so. Last time i checked he released a preliminary version with a Deimos, Herc2, Mara in game, and nothing else, and he said he wasn't going to work on this anymore...
