So, I had my annual review at work yesterday and my boss gave me a decent bonus (but only $1,500 more than last year... and I did 10 times more than the year before), a new title (assistant VP of acquisitions) and an 11% raise. I argued with her that I should get at least a 20% raise b/c that's what would be my salary range if I was in the market now, with the 2 years experience I have here. She told me that she would discuss it with the other owners and the Human Resources department (don't even get me started on that one) and would get back to me.
Comes back later in the day and tells me that she couldn't justify giving me any more than what she gave me because I don't have my Masters degree. That it was a huuuuge hole in my resume and in my skill-set. If I had it, she said I would be more of a value for her. Most of this, so you know, is an excuse by her not to give me more money :doubt:
But she's right. I should have my masters. And I should have gotten it when I got out of the Uni 4 years ago. I didn't have the money then, but I think it's high time I went back. The good thing is that my company has a program where they pay a percentage of tuition and books depending on your grades. For instance, if by the miracle of life I get an A in grades, the company reimburses me 90% of tuition and books. The lowest they go is 50% reimbursement if I get a C.
I'm just dreading going back to school *sulk* I haven't had to open a book in 4 years. Now I'm going to have to take weekend and night classes... AND HOMEWORK... ugh. I don't even remember half the things I learned :(
Anyway, who has gone back to school after being away from it for so long? And I don't mean summer vacation. How'd you guys feel about it? Was it hard getting back in the groove?

Well, one of my mates at uni is 30 (with 3 kids), and he's handled going back into fulltime education after several years away pretty well.

That's a big classic :p
You're lucky she even accepted discussing about it, really.

That's the business etiquette of asking for more, basically. Industry standard :)

Yeah.. school.. boo.
-
careful if your too skilled they'll fire you for being too expensive, then you'll never be able to get a job becase nobody would want to pay for what your worth
-
Then ask to be underpayed?
-
then whats the point of skool, unless you want to meet some hot college chicks
-
Are college chicks always hot?
-
generaly, and many of them are going for well paying jobs ;7

I've been researching the situation in uni for the last 3 years, and it appears that law, psychology and biology are the best subjects for totty.... business is a bit so-so, and computer science and (I think) any engineering disciple do poorly.
-
Yeah, but biology gets all the ugly ones. Philsophy's not bad, though. And if your college offers a theater degree... ow.
'Course, I had the bad luck to wind up at the college that seems to have the highest ratio of absolute dingoes to presentable females in the country. 'S really no wonder that about a third of the place is gay...

Mmh, I remember fondly my year at the litteracy uni ( foreign languages section ), when I was working on my english DEUG. More hot chicks on the m³ that you could ever dream of. Better than Miami :p.
Seems hot girls like tongues :p
"runs"

I only have one question.
"DEUG"?
-
Well, philosophy has some nice honey's, but they're all bra burners. Or you have to be able to recite nitzche or as if it's the bible. And that's no fun. Psychology is where the good ones are at. Business, believe it or not, doesn't have that many bad looking women. They're actually hotties. If you're in undergrad, they're usually pretty fun and loose. But when you're in the graduate program, all the women have been disullusioned by the double standard in the workforce and come to see all men as competition or an impedence.

Yeah, I'm feeling you. I know that if I was to get my masters and graduate 2 years from now, that my boss will find another problem with me and still not be able to pay me more.
After reflection and seeing how everyone else in the company only got 3% - 5% raises, I've come to realize that I shouldn't complain. Plus the title will help me if I was to pursue another job.

Diplôme d'Etudes Universitaires Générales
Now I'm sure you're happy having asked :p

"Bra burners"? Okay, hyperbole, but a fair accusation. But you'd better be taking back that part about philosophy students and Nietzche. Crazy mother****er, don't even know why anybody bothers teach him...
-
lol, I never could get into Nietzche. But I was doing that hyperbole thing you mentioned (I looked it up, I'm that smart). Trying to basically say that most are too philosophical for my tastes right now. College chicks are good for one thing, and one thing only (when you're already out of school)... and it's not to drink frappucino's at Starbucks while we discuss our existence.

Not 'ere. to clarify, totty implies attractive.
We've done extensive studies in this area, over many hours.......
