Dont just say ick, at least give constructive criticism.
And do take note - its only 1 texture i changed with a custom and newly made one in Photoshop. Its my first attempt, so :P, im allowed to let it look ick :P
now post away telling me how to improve it :P

?
Havent heard of the Iron giant....

Is that FS_retail you used for those screenshots? If not, why do you use the crappy old 8-bit thruster glows and no spec mapping?
-
Well, it can't be retail FS2 as it has glowmapping. However, I'd wager that he doesn't have the files necessary for everything else.
And it still amazes me how much the glow mapping can bring out the highlights on such an ugly ship.

That wasn't the dude who ate all the fences, got buried in a hole, then saved the world from a giant bat thing from Orions Belt was it?

Yep. It got made into a cartoon film too.
-
Don't remember anything about a gaint bat though. Just a gaint, brain-damaged, indestructible robot killing machine that strangely couldn't handle a couple of high-tension electrical wires, but doesn't get disintegrated by a nuke.
-
Reminds me of a Homeworld: Cataclysm scheme I used, from afar this Hecate is the same as the Kuun-Lan!
I like it. Any place to d/l it? ;)

The picture was too dark for me to really appreciate it...
Damn, all these threads about new ships and textures makes me want to design one. Not having a computer sucks.

The bat was in the book and not the film.

Hmmm. :) If you're changing one of the textures, I'd go for a complete reskin, to give it a total new look.

Which is why im working on Capital7.pcx atm :D

Cool. What's your aim with these new textures? You need to have a direction and purpose with your reskins, otherwise it'll end up being... "why?". Even if it's just to stretch your muscles and build experience for your next reskin, then keep experimenting with new things.

I dunno bout aim im afraid...guess its just to experiment and find out all of Photoshop's features and trying to make the Hecate look....different, if nothing else ;)
-
Okay, well good. Have a direction and (even better) a goal, then at the end of it you can say you've achieved something. :)
-
ROFLMAO!
A recent endeavour into switching textures and making new ones.

Any comments, laughter, general complaints welcome :P

general complaint:
- Textures look a bit odd. Especially the green and the lack of metal - it looks like its made of plastic: Make it grainy, shiny (metallic), shadowed, and Freespacey.
- work a bit more on the background and post the missions in my neb dev thread (I can use all background constellations that look nice :) )

-Its still a WIP when it comes to textures. I fully intend to add speckles and what-not when I finish detailed 'em ;) Question: how do you make it shadowed in Photoshop?
-the backgrounds have just been kitbashed in via FRED. i could only see the general placement but i intend to improve on it. Its nothing but a simple test mission to see how the textures appear in FS2, that's all. ;)
-
Use Fred OGL if you want to see more in the background section :)
Shadowing is either done by hand (duh!) or with layer blending.
-
Yea, the green throws it off. Otherwise, it's OK, imo :)
-
If you put a star and some specular lighting into those test missions, it'll show off your work far more effectively. :)

Understood...will do.

wooooooooo!
Its done! New and tabled, the GTD Titan class is an upgrade to the old GTD Hecate. Sporting a new reactor, a prototype shield generator, and the state-of-the-art NBeam.
I'll post pics in a min or 2

Oh, wowsers! Now that is outstanding.:yes: Fantastic work, can you tell us more about that NBeam?

Thanks! :D
I'd prefer speaking about the beam a bit later, since im still tweaking it atm ;)
-
That's a nice improvement Singh :) Keep at it. We need texturers more than FREDders for MG so you'll have lots of opertunities to show off your new skills :D
-
Its almost done! I've edited the .tbls and fine-tuned it, introducing 1 new weapon: The RLA 100X missile.
The problem is, i think im getting a bug whereby the ship randomly destroys itself for some strange reason. I think its the fact that the missiles appear to be hitting the ship itself rather than the target, but i cannot be sure.
Any bug-fixing, testing, comments, opinions and criticism will be much appreciated (along with screenies ofc :))
GTD Titan (http://anandraj.sphosting.com/capital4.zip)
The tech description is a bit off - but that will be updated as soon as the bug is out :D
WARNING! Putting the textures into the maps directory will overwrite the previous ones, and whichever ship uses the old textures will have the new ones in place!
-
You need to fix the edge on that beam - otherwise, very impressive. Not entirely freespacey, but still a high quality retexture. Good use of Glowmapping too.
Just FYI, you can change the names of the textures in modelview, to prevent that sort of texture overwriting. It's a fairly simple job, too.
Now, what we really need is a higher poly hecate... ho hum.
-
Textures need detail, beam needs a lot of work.
-btw: any background compositions can be posted in my neb release thread. Thanks! :D

I will returret it, if someone re-models it...
Honestly, I was thinking about returreting it anyway, like I did with the Orion. Might redo that too.....:drevil:

A simple reskin. Why?

Why not?

I've fixed the NBeam's table properties and will renew the zip soon. For now, gotta go to work tho. And I'll release the mission with the backgrounds as soon as i've finished it completely :D
(the mission, not the backgrounds :P)
LS - any suggestions on the details?
BW - beam edge? How do you change that o_O and what is this glowmap you speak of? I never made any O_o
Oh, and here's a pic showing off the NBeam firing from 3 different sources:

Hey, area suppression weapon!
Keep bombarding a jump node with that and no small ships will make it through alive.

Or big ships for that matter...you should have seen what that thing did first to the Molochs, then the Demon, then the Ravana, the Lucifer and then even more Molochs! (alas, the Titan didn't last through the second group - but not before taking out all 5!)
(note: this was WITHOUT fighters or bombers - i killed em all before they could take out the main beam array, which they did several times)
-
Hehe. Beam shotgun.
I'm curious as to how you did this...swarm tag?
-
Not really. I actually suspect it may just be a bug.
I put the beam type as 1, set the time to 90 Seconds, lifetime to 7 and high speed (for range). Then this effect...just turned up when I tested it
The only flags I used were the normal one that came in with the mjonler's beams (I actually copied and pasted that entry before modifying it).
Somehow - every few seconds a new beam pops up as the first one goes through its slashing phase, and then another and another and another till you see what occurs on screen. The beams continue on despite there being no target (as seen on the pic), but eventually beams start disappearing one by one till they are all gone :o
-
We are the borg be prepared to be asimilated.

I can explain it. Each beam fires for 90 seconds (ouch!). And the firewait (how long the weapon waits till it can fire again) is set to 7 seconds.
So every 7 seconds it fires again, despite the fact that the weapon is already firing...
Weapon speed has no effect on beam range, the range is effected by the $WeaponRange: line.

Weapon speed DOES have an effect - at least, i think it does. Before, i kept the weaponrange to 10000, but it would still only attack when it was at 3km or below, which was basically my lifetime into the speed (1300x 2) but when I increased it, it started attacking at full range without problem.
And thanks for the explanation for the multiple beams :)
-
Well, all my beams are set to the speed of light, and nothing changed...:doubt:
Maybe it does, maybe not.
-
try setting the beam speed to around 1k or less, and the lifetime to 3 seconds, and you'll get the same effect ;)
Edit: At least, maybe you will ;)

I DO hope you know that I meant it to the very first picture. I do not know why you do not like a simple reskin of the original Hecate. It is not like a Vasudan Arcadia(Vasudan textures on Terran installation? :wtf:), it looks Terran even with this skin.
I do not find it ugly. But your version is much better.
However, I find the Shotgun-stlye beam a bit overkill, but that is only me, so consider I haven't said anything. :D
