it's probably already been thought of, but how about having an alpha strike attack mode? anyone who's played mechwarrior three will know what this is, where you basically press a button and it unloads your entire arsenal in one fiery blast (really fun when sniping with rail guns, but anyways) but i was thinking of just having it with missiles. I got this idea while reading the topic about visual missile launches, at the bottom of page two, or top of page three, but anyways, here's the bulk of it:
-press designated "alpha strike" button
-drop ALL dumbfire missiles, but in the manner suggested where the missile starts out with only the ship's velocity, then half a second after the dead-launch, afterburners activate
-drop missiles from the cargo hold at 4/second, creating almost a machine-gun/shotgun effect with the missiles ;7
and imho, this would only be really cool with dumbfires, while shooting at a large target, but that's mostly just for the visual effect :D

Or it may be adapted to non-bomb missiles, but only active if you've got a lock on your target? And what of heatseekers (yeah, like anyone uses those, right? :p )? Seeing 64 Rockeyes suddenly spring to life and rain down on that pesky Cain would be so gratifying...

BTW, an Alpha strike is the best way to blow up any heat sink...

This would be viable only if some heat/advanced ship system management was introduced, so you couldn't get away with using it for multiple times or carelessly controlling your craft.

I'm glad you're thinking of making it dumfires-only. If it were available for bombs, it would take all the fun and difficulty out of bombing runs - a Moloch could be taken down within seconds of a bomber wing releasing their payloads! Ummm, but I dunno. I think maybe it should only be available on certain ships, otherwise the balancing would be screwed over with firing times. :)

I'd prefer a "normal" alpha strike option where you can fire every single bank at the same time (at their normal firing rates). Would be rather useless for aspect missiles of course.
