Title: No Hard Light Productions favicon?
Post by: Mr.Garibaldi on February 15, 2004, 11:36:57 pm
Hey all! This website and forum seems to be the top of the line in webpage development.  And a lot of us seem to be using mozilla/firebird/firefox i.e. browsers that DO support favicons (little icon next to URL and bookmarks).
But this page seems to have no favicon yet?!  While I am not artistically gifted enough to make one I'm sure someone out there is.  Maybe this thread can be an area for users to post a favicon idea and get a webmaster to install it?

All we need is THIS: (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/images/on.gif)

Oh, and its 'Ivanova', not 'Ivonova'. ;)

*gruffy old geezer voice* Back in my day, favicons were on a per-domain basis - you'd stick a favicon.gif (.ico?) on the root dir of a domain (www.blahblah.com/favicon.gif) and the browser'd take care of the rest.

What's the latest in favicon integration technology? I have a hazy recollection of it being selectable via HTML tags, but I haven't a clue as to what the code is.

Once upon a time, Gamespy used their's since it's their server, but even that seems to have been taken down.

I usually assign it FS2 icon manually.

a quick search shows there is a tag in the < head > area:
< link rel="shortcut icon" >
I got this from www.favicon.com

gahhh *changes signature* I am suprised noone in the firstones.com forums caught that misspell yet :)

Put spaces between the lesser and greater than signs because the vB was parsing the HTML tags. // Setekh

Okay, how does this look: bookmark this page ("http://3dap.com/hlp/staff/setekh/favicon_test.htm") (ignore all the broken image links). The icon turns up for me on the bookmark list, but not at the top right of my IE window... :nervous:

Nifty, works for me on firefox 0.8

Edit: Actually it doesn't work in the bookmark menu, only next to the URL

Hmmm. Okay, it now works on IE's bookmark list and address bar, and I can see it in Mozilla's address bar, but Firefox's address bar is displaying the GameSpy icon for me. :wtf: Anyone else?

I think gamespy has some thing where any address associated with 3dap.com has the gamespy favicon.
Maybe you can do it on the dynamic4.gamespy.com addresses?
Internet Explorer never got favicons right yet... they work 10% of the time and maybe less... only non-IE browsers do favicons right almost all the time.
