Title: Network Programming Opening
Post by: BlueFlames on February 16, 2004, 06:10:01 am
Kevin Bently, the leader of the Descent 3 development team, is looking for some network programmers to help him work on the PXO server code.  It sounds like his goal is to make a replacement to PXO that D3 and FS will connect to out-of-the-box as if it were PXO.

There's the thread for anyone interested.

What I want to do is get the original PXO server source cleaned up and ported to run with mysql on linux. It's not a lot of work, but I was hoping to find someone to help out with it. No offers so far though.  :(

i doubt that you can even do it, because of legal issues.

What legal issues are you referring to? I originally wrote this code and I've got permission from the copyright holders (Mike Kulas and Matt Toschlog) to release the source -- I just want to get it cleaned up and (basically) ported first.

holy ****!
it's a

we don't get many devs of V or O (your actualy the first that I'm aware of, from Outrage) in these parts much any more. :(
not sence the Columbia disaster and daveb's disgust with a few Europeans' reactions
sorry I can't help, I'm not a network programer.
Kazan would probly be the best bet, but this would be the third major project he would be working on, and he's barely able to keep up with the two he has (and his life), and he recently made a replacement for PXO for us, so this would be sort of like competition to him.
perhapse you could help us a bit in getting our net code working?

But he's releasing the source for PXO... isn't this what Kazan wanted anyway?

baaastard :D soon as I get fs2netd basically stablized.

I may be able to give you some pointers - and you could use the mysql++ interface for fs2netd as reference

Kevin:

When the Fs2 source was released, we were told that they had to remove the PXO client code for security reasons and I believe it was implied that the original IP holder was Interplay. This is all working form 2 year old memories, I'll have to see what Dave said originally :)

Is it possible to get a look at the windows only code? We have some Windows servers available to us, we might get to see it running interim :)

So, that's great to hear you  are able to do this, and thanks for stopping by over here and saying hello :)

I wonder if this means we could get the old client code back...
