Title: Best DivX codecs?

Anyone have any suggestions? I reinstalled win, so I have none. The old ones I had (nimo's) where buggy, but that's probably because they were beta.

Let me tell you, stay clear of codec packs. Codec packs are nothing but trouble.

Instead, here's an excellent media setup guide. (http://www.inmatrix.com/articles/mediasetup.shtml)
If you don't want to go through the trouble collecting each codec, I have already done it,  so I might as well share it. Media setup guide codecs rarred. (http://koti.mbnet.fi/fury/misc/Codecs.rar)

With this, you know exactly what you have installed and all codecs works and are compatible with each other.

I recommend you to install DivX, Xvid and ffdshow codecs but configure ffdshow not to decode divx 4, 5 and xvid. Let the other two handle those.
The rar contains WMP9 only for WinXP, so get it from MS download site for other windozes. (No, you don't have to use it, just install it)

Actually it's not a codec pack per se. Just rarred codecs the media guide lists. With an exception real and quicktime directshow filters which I skipped and put in Real and QuickTime Alternatives instead.

I am not touching those K-lite, Nimo, SLD, etc codec packs. I once did that mistake and after that my audio was ****ed up. The problem with most of those codec packs is that they have a ****load of codecs (most of you never use 90% of the codecs) and can be incompatible or simply just crap.

It is recommended to download only the codecs you need, it can be difficult at first. But if you are smart, you store the codecs so you don't have to look for them again. (Until you go and check whether a newer version is out). And maybe installation will take longer because there's no single installer for all the codecs, actually you need to manually register most of the filters.

So for the sake of your system, only install the codecs you actually need.
