Post by: Janos on February 17, 2004, 12:31:32 pm
ARGAHAGARAGHRAGHRGA

Show us what you've done, sirs, as digging old threads for screenshots - especially RR1 - is getting goddamn frustrating. Boost our interest and make us wake up screaming in agony because we lack RR1 until ... someday.

Please...? :(

Well we can't show much since most of it is still in the wip phase.

So here's some shots of a test I did this morning:

A model I made today because I was bored:

we won't be using it though.

beam armed?

It doesn't have any pof data yet and hasn't been tested in game...

Post by: DeepSpace9er on February 18, 2004, 12:16:08 am
Try it yourself.. make a mission with an Icanus facing a Gigas with their beams turned on and watch them duke it out.

When i saw the Gigas blow up a few moments after it started i thought i made a SEXP that self destructed it.

Just give Usilv to Alpha1 and watch the even Gargant blow.

The Gargant takes less than 1% damage per USilv shot...

The Icanus should take 2-3 shots to destroy the Gigas.

That's why the Terrans developed a planetary defense array composed by 20 Usilv...
Title: To: Crew: We demand teaser screenshots.
Post by: Woomeister on February 18, 2004, 07:08:06 am
A 20 USilv device isn't really possible, since it takes most of the Icanus reactor power to charge a single shot.

Not on a ship, but a planet or even a mid sized moon has plenty of room for reactors...

GTVA capital-ship plasma cannons

Instead of going to the trouble of installing a huge beam emitter that can only fire once every 30 seconds or so, the GTVA uses plasma cannons to fill a lot of hardpoint slots on their warship-killers. At close ranges they are far more effective en masse than the equivalent 'caliber' beams. Aside from a couple of lasers and flak guns the Oberon class escort destroyer (pictured) is completely armed with these plasma cannons.

Post by: T-Man on February 20, 2004, 03:34:29 am
I have three ways of dealking with the Gargant. There all probably completly psycho ideas, but they would all work:

1) Surrender to the Shivans: the Heretic's option

2) HW2 theme: Terrans find an ancient superweapon and use it to destroy the Gargant

3) I will say nothing on this idea other than two questions:

Nope, the Gemeni effect cuases some timespace thinimagig that allows two of the same ship to appear in one universe. If you use it on the same ship more than once, you get more than one clone.

use it on the Icanus :drevil:

Hey, it's not that big after all, it's "only" 40km or so, not enought to have it's own noticeable gravity, it won't be sucked in a black hole better than a fighter...

Remeber that heavy things do NOT fall faster....
Title: To: Crew: We demand teaser screenshots.
Post by: Zarax on February 20, 2004, 05:31:11 am
I know, but the mass in this case matter, because a fighter could always put enough thruster accelleration to jump, while a capship cannot because it takes much more to get the necessary speed for a jump...

Well ok, but gravity is a very weak force, so the gravitational attraction of a black hole becomes really strong only when you are very very close to them, plus black holes are really small, so i think no shivan will be dumb enought to get that close to one, especially the one in command of such a big ship (if ever exisit something like ship capitains between shivans...)

And beside, i don't think it's necessary to gain any speed before subspace jumping, that is for time jumping, and another movie as well  :)

Black holes aren't small, they are capable to eat whole stars...
Title: To: Crew: We demand teaser screenshots.
Post by: Janos on February 20, 2004, 06:58:21 am
If someone flungs a star at them.

Back to thread: I just wondered whether you [designers] had developed some kind of long range area suppression weapon? Like capship CM launchers, but for longer range? Because capships seem to be pretty short-handed (except beams) when it comes to fighters.

And just what sized are GTVA ships' defensive umbrella anyway? 1,5 km? 1 km? 3 km? [no beams plz]

black holes are small, if they weren't small they will be stars, not black holes, and no, stars don't fit into them, they got sucked a little at a time for thousands of years.

teorically black hole have no volumes at all, as they are effectively points with no dimensions at all, but of course what it matters (the event horizon) has a definite volume, that is usually much smaller than that of a planet, but also can be as small as an egg, if mr. Hawking is right.

back to topic: the gtva spaceships have unrealistically short range anti cap weapons, if you think that the LONG RANGE green beam don't even reach 8km, i suppose most ships will die in collisions with the gargant while trying to get close enought to fire their weapons
Title: To: Crew: We demand teaser screenshots.
Post by: SadisticSid on February 20, 2004, 07:32:56 am
Freespace is short of realism in so many ways that it isn't worth talking about things like the ultra-high beam attenuation we seem to get over a few k. :)

Most big beams will have a range of 7-10k, the Apothess will be able to fire its long range cannon over 20k.

EDIT: Skaarj, it was indeed done with particle spew and a custom ani. Those plasma 'projectiles' fly fairly slowly and make a really nice explosion on impact. A capship under fire from an Oberon has so many explosion anis on the hull that it looks like it's melting.

yes, that's a thing i always do too when i mod, putting explosions on impact of primaries, it's really cool seeing desroyers under a fire barrage with their hull covered in fire :)

Those are a multi-shot anti-fighter weapon used by the GTVA. All those heading towards my fighter are from a single salvo. The Peregrine is under attack by 1 heading towards it, and one sideways.

The Alcyone has quite a few of those.

Quite a devastating weapon :D

The Hastor is the best gun the Perseus ADv can use I think.

It is definitely reminiscent of a Sath, but with only one ventral boom, as well as aft extensions from the upper 2 booms.  There also seems to be some more ventral whiskers starting up front and sweeping aft, like the upper boom extensions, but not attatched to a boom.  The upper booms seem to lack engines, while there appears to be a primary engine in the standard location and a single engine at the rear of the lower boom.

Are we talking "destroyer" caliber, or is this a Jug?

You got a name for this new awesome capital ship?

Venom (Nico) made an effects pack for OTT, we use that for a most of our effects now since they're so much better. Oh, and Lightspeed's upgraded art will no doubt go into it in the future as well.

Some are mine, and some where made by Darkage and Phreak too.

We don't currently have an effect artist staff member. We only really have a few mission designers :D

Oh, ok... I'm making some custom weapon effects for a campaign of mine and this seemed the best place where to look for some great stuff...

Starfighter, we have custom ANIs which make that effect. The TBL entry would be fairly useless to you. Just have a look on the SCP forums for information on the "Pspew" flag.

Iirc, the only things I've done in that pack are the explosions.

2) You still use a SD Ibis? It' wasn't bad ship.
- if yes, do you have something to replace. Screenshots?
3) Do you scrapped a SSD Diablo?

4)  Ancients ships will be in the next realese?

5) What is a purpose of Belerophon cruiser, it's AA like rest of cruisers, Anti-corvette of both of them?

That'll be a nice thing to add to my list of titles.

Turambar: Creator of Turambar's Thruster Glows, Turambar's Beam Glows, Hi-Res Capship Textures (you couldn't notice the fighters... and it's as of yet unreleased) and then, Hi-Res 32-bit Weapon and Engine Effects for Inferno by Turambar.

I think I'll have fun with this *looks at effects again* lots of fun
