Title: Art slumps, how do you get out of them?
Post by: Unknown Target on February 18, 2004, 05:44:27 am
I'm in an uber-art-slump, and have been for the past month or so. I just can't think of ANYTHING to draw, and anything I do try to draw, I can't ever do.  How do you guys get out of them?

First rule: don't force yourself.

Then depending on what you wanna draw, watch a movie/series that'll fit the genre. That works quite well with me, at least.

or do what i did the other week, litrally sketch what you look at as you see it, nothing special just quick 5mins sketches max as you see it. It leads to some intresting results,

I'll post some pics up at some point.

Thats the final piece for a one week drawing block from a trip to berlin on my graphics course, i'll possibly post the individual sketches up later.[/edit]

That could pass as a $1 million piece of abstract art :p

Gotta love modern art, imo worthless, yet it sells if you are popular. Speaking of which, how in hell do you become popular selling crap like abstract art?

Sleep.  Works for me most times.

Oh, and hide every piece of paper, pen and pencil you have - ideas always come at the least convenient time :)

At least for me.... although I've had artistic block since last year......

I've been in an art-slump since 1996 :(  I was drawing since I was a tiny monkey.  People always would see me with a sketch pad or doodling on loose leaf paper.  I wasn't the best artist but I loved it.  But for some reason, around the time I was getting into college, I just couldn't draw anymore.

Wait, that's not true. I'd get ideas of things to draw, I just didn't feel like drawing anymore.  It just didn't do it for me anymore.  Kinda like the feeling of when you stopped playing with your GI Joes.  You knew you loved playing with them, but it just didn't do it for you anymore.

Maybe when I get my computer up and running and I hijack my girl's scanner, I'll scan some of the drawings and put them up here.  Maybe that would get me out of my slump.

Art slumps ain't so bad. You give it time, and then eventually you'll just make yourself start again, and it'll work more or less.

The real problem is when you get in a work slump.

its all cyclic, you'll feel creative again in a bit - just use the time for something else instead.   Maybe you need to clean out your house? :)

"slump" indicates a change in status. For example, there are times when I become so idle I can't even work up the mental energy to waste time. You amateurs are just run-of-the-mill slothful.

don't think you could really do anything about it. i've tried to force myself to draw before, and the result wasn't pretty at all. go for a swim or something. get out of the house.

1) I was peaceful
2) I became lazy

I think I'm getting out of it :) The way I did it was by experimenting with a new medium (pen) and a super-loose style.
