has anyone had any problems INSTALLING descent 1 or 2? it's not like i can't play it, i can't even install them... the biggest problem is that most of the time Descent 2's setup doesn't work, and when it does, it can't detect my sound card (usually i just use the DOS setup, because it's faster and easier). i dunno.
-
I can install D2 without incident (haven't tried Descent), but like you I have issues with sound cards.
-
i use a cracked win95 version. its old but it works with my stick. as for installing, i havent a clue. if theres a dos version on the disk you could try intalling that. i just wish it used htl. i miss the voodoo version, it got an amazing 120 fps. theres a thing you can get called vdm sound. it allows you to play sound from within windows virtual dos machine. another program calld glidos can emulare glide, though i never got eighter one to work.
-
well shoot, do i have to build another computer just to play Descent 1 and 2? I'm apparently experiencing one of the horrors that associates XP with old, Dos-based games and such.
-
Hey Stealth, can you get my web space account set up like you said?
Sorry, KT recommended posting in a topic to get your attention. back to your business people.
-
Well, this won't help you install the game, but I was directed to a DOS emulator that helps to run old DOS games on PCs. (Ah, Turbo Trek, back to a sane speed...)
The emulator is called DOSBox and can be found through here (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1) .
Apparently, D1 sorta works in the latest version, although there is no news about D2. In any case, if any of you have old DOS games that you really want to play again but can't, DOSBox maybe the answer.
I must admit I'm using Win98 SE, so I have no idea how effective the emulator is in XP.

What if we are having trouble running Freespace 1 on the computer? I Mean, when I try and open it up it just says "FS1 has encountered a problem and will now close" deal that I always get. Is there a work-around?
-
Some of these old autorunners are highly sensitive to outside influences. FS1 in particular seems to get all screwy whenever the computer's around a source of static electricity, like an organism. The solution is very simple- since you can't very well operate the machine from a long distance, what you need is rapid dehydration prior to the installer's bootup, to remove the highly conductive water that's causing the problem and also any rogue charged particles. This will enable the program to run in a static-free environment hopefully conducive to installation.
Got any gasoline about?
-
Um...
What?
-
Get the gasoline and I'll walk you through it.
-
Im sorry...
What is this stuff about gasoline? What do you want me to do?
-
I just told you.
Sorry, I really can't explain it any more simply. It's rather technical. Just do it and we'll see what's what. Oh, and if you have a Zippo about, that'd be grand.
-
o_0 dood, your messed up.
All I need is for Freespace 1 to work properly on my computer. Its done it before, but now I think it has something to do with a graphical problem or something. I'd rather get the port then have to deal with this... I mean, GASOLINE man!
-
Oh, no, it's a very simple process, and then your problems with legacy software from the 95/98 period are basically over.
If you just can't get the gasoline, alcohol will do in a pinch. Not as reliable results, but it'll still do the job.

I got Descent: Destination Saturn, a 15 level version of the game. I get like 50k fps when i run it on my 2.8ghz computer.... it makes multiplayer extremely interesting ;)

I had the same problem on Me. I am not sure about Descent 1 but for Descent 2, you can open the descent2.sow file on the CD using something like Winrar and extract the files manually. The Vertigo installer seems to work fine though. However, both games run way too fast on today's machines (not just the framerate, the entire game goes 20 times as fast as it should; e.g. the ship bob looks like an earthquake and will make you dizzy in seconds :D) and are completely unplayable. Since you are on XP it is unlikely that you will be able to get any hardware-based SB16 emulation to work anyway. Neither game works well with DOSBox, as the sound is all warped and for some reason your ship turns extremely slowly.
There are some Win95 versions out there that you will need to use to get things working and playable. For D1, you can use the fanmade D1_3dfx version, but you will obviously need a Voodoo2 or something like that installed. For D2, the 3dfx version is buggy and DOS-based, but there is an official Win95 version (software-rendered) that works pretty well. The game will probably still be far too fast to be playable, but if you run the game on the higher resolutions (to unlock these, use the command line -superhires) and turn off the cockpit, it runs perfectly. There is also an SDL OpenGL version of D2 out there, but that seems to have issues with the sound.
I still think D2 had some of the best fan-made mission packs of any game. The cheats were top-notch as well and you could spend hours just playing around with those. :D
By the way, I finally got Lemmings 2 to work; the DOS version was having all kinds of issues, so I got the SNES version and an emulator and that one works perfectly. :D

I had pretty much the same problem installing Starlancer (demo worked fine though).
-
Ok, I have called the Interplay cmpany a couple years back for FS2 (back when i wouldn't do anything) and they pointed there finger at microsoft and micosoft did the same for them. I took to a local repair shop they said it's "INTERPLAYS!!"fault. I'm not sure what he did but he downloaded something and it worked.
and I can't remember what it is or where it goes, but I have recognized.. I think karajorma mentioned it before on this site. :confused:sooo.... Take somewhere to get it fixed or wait until someone posts the answer.
-
yeah i wouldn't call up Interplay with troubleshooting issues, they really can't/won't help you out :-/
