Title: Display Problem!
Post by: Xelion on February 28, 2004, 02:38:51 am: I have this display problem that is really starting to bother me. I get these black boxes that cover parts of drop down menus in most applications, and even right click menus. This problem only occurs after running the computer for a while (maybe 2 or 3 hours sometimes less). They seem to only appear on drop down menus: screenies are below (sample from ps7 - but they do occur in all appz on my computer even in the browser menus) and right click menus:

Heres my system specs (detailed (//"http://home.iprimus.com.au/nexus387/forums/systemspecs.gif")):

Athlon XP 2800
1GB DDR400 RAM
Asus Radeon 9600XT (Cat4.2/DX9b)
Viewsonic VG700 Display

I have absolutely no idea whats causing this :sigh: help would be great. thanx ;)

Truly, it sounds like a cooling issue, whether it's the Mobo or Vid Card is hard to tell. What is the Mobo? Use AIDA to find out. (http://www.aida32.hu/aida32-download.php)

Then use Motherboard Monitor to determine your core temp. (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download311.html)

How long has it been since you cleaned your fans and HSFs?

Try running the computer with the case off.

Try a different video card.

Post the temp.

I know it does not happen straight away, could be within an hour. Does it happen faster: Not Sure.

The computer is new, the case fans are clean, the cpu fan, the gpu fan are all clean.

I'll try taking the case off as a last resort but I doub't it'll have any affect. I don't have another video card - that might be a problem.

Temperatures

CPU: 48-60'C
MB: 28-36'C
GPU: 37-46'C
Graphics RAM: 39-48'C

The thresh hold for all above is roughly 70'C each - can go up to 80'C but thats risking damage. CPU hasn't gone past 62'C, MB past 40'C, GPU past 50'C, GRAM past 51'C.

Post by: Xelion on February 28, 2004, 08:20:41 am: Thanks for the help dudes ;), seeing these images below (offcuts have been made due to file size) has made me reconsider Bobboau's solution. Theres no way I can play the game with lines through the background or through text, worst off all the graphics in game doesn't look to good either, especially beams :(.

I tried both uninstalling all video drivers and trying my original driver cd and then cat 4.1, and 4.2 and it did not work.

Post by: Liberator on February 28, 2004, 03:40:01 pm: I agree. Truthfully, I've never been able to see a difference between a regular image and an image rendered with AA.

If that doesn't work, there may be something caca with the card.

Post by: Solatar on February 28, 2004, 03:52:58 pm: I have that exact same problem with in-game fs2. AA is not on to my knowledge. I had it fixed once before, but I used a friend's monitor for a LAN party, and it hasn't worked since.

Go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Performance settings > Untick "Show shadows under menus" or untick everything except "Use visual styles on windows and buttons" and "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop". The latter is not needed if your desktop is completely free of icons.

Post by: Xelion on March 02, 2004, 07:28:47 am: Thanks Mr. Fury ;), that advice was useful and seeing that I only installed Windows XP about 6 weeks ago I would have never come across that for a while.

After testing out the different options in the performace settings dialog box I finally came across my problem: it was the [COLOR="burlywood"]Fade or slide menus into view[/COLOR] so thats checked off and all is Cool. :D
