Title: shoot me...please
Post by: Singh on February 28, 2004, 06:25:39 am
I just found out some bad news.....

After enjoying my birthday on the 22nd (sunday) sometime during the night between 22nd and 23rd (monday), my dog died. I was only informed today, nearly a week later.

It seems he was suffering from infections for several days and came close to death on several occasions. The doctor was in almost every day and gave Anti-biotics. He briefly became better, before getting worse, and finally succumbing to it during the night.......

I dont know what to do next........somebody shoot me, so at least I can feel something.

My sympathies, Singh. Losing a pet is very much like losing a close friend. Sure, they're not technically human but they do take up a portion of ourselves that is usually reserved for our family and friends.

I know it's cliched, but remember the good times. Be thankful for the time you did have together and always be aware that you gave him the best life you could. He's free of the suffering that his illness caused and will rest in peace as long as you remember him.:)

The hell I will. His dog died. He doesn't know what to do next. If you can't spell 'overreaction', it's not my problem.

Oh, wait. My Tamagotchi also died recently. :( :( :(

Tamagotchis aren't real living things, if you can't show some ****ing compassion then find yourself another forum.

I am not joking.

At what point, exactly, do you draw a distinction line between two entities which, even though they exist, have no consciousness of themselves?

The point where the admins say so...usually works best...

EDIT: sorry to hear about your dog, we have a 13 year old one and she looks to be going pretty soon as well.

If you want to debate consciousness then start your own thread.

Singh here - if he's going through anything like what I went through when I lost a dog - does not need your lack of sympathy. If you've nothing better to say than "so? I don't care" then do him, me and everyone else who feels his pain a favour and stop posting here right now.

I know what it's like, too. I lost one of the dogs I grew up with this summer. My dad called her my sister because we were so close sometimes. Although I won't go into detail, it was a really hard week for me. I still haven't really 'gotten over it' as much as I've accepted it/forgotten it.

You'll be able to move on the same, it just takes time.

Considering that I haven't even had a pet since I was 6 I'm not exactly sure what you're going through Singh but my condolences on your loss.

It's never easy to lose a friend, even the four-footed kind.  My sympathies, too.

Thank you for your thoughts...

I need your opinion tho...which is better? Feeling the pain and forever remembering, or forgetting him and simply moving on?

Normally this would raise questions on life for me, but I've already answered those questions before, so im just about stuck atm.

You don't really get a choice in the matter.

Which may be fortunate. I imagine it'd be one of those choices where there really isn't an answer you wouldn't regret.

sure it's sad when someone/thing dies, but it would be even worse if it he/she/it lived forever.

Condolences, Singh. I know what it's like to lose pets. Life is fragile, isn't it?

Why do you say that? I'm curious.

to me the thought of an eternal life gets boring. it would really suck when the sun blows up and leaves you, the imortal, floating in space for the rest of your eternal existance.

Dying sucks and living forever (even in the afterlife) sucks.

Personally, I'd go for a "Even if the universe ends, you're left" kinda existence.

Because as soon as time ends, you'd instantly gain all knowledge (as without time as a factor you could think for an instant and it'd be the same as doing so for an eternity). Then you could reverse time; play with matter, space and energy; cruise inter-dimensional space; etc.

So would I be right in saying that your opinion is that it would be generally sucky if there wasn't anything new? Boring, as in, the same things (or one same experience) continually; and having all knowledge and thus having no learning?

I dunno, I think it's possible to enjoy things even when you know them back to front - in fact, some times it's easier and better to enjoy things that you know very well. Playing guitar would be my own personal example. Learning new stuff/ways to play is great fun, but I can find enjoyment in playing something a song I like that I know back-to-front and has nothing new in it.

The way to enterain yourself when you know everything is to limit your power, then forget the future.

Personally, I think that's what God did with Jesus.

He'd been cruising around for a few millenia decorating the universe and thought "Man, I could do with some fun. I know, I'll go play The Humans: Livin' It Large". And t3h phun comes from trying to get Jesus to do just the right things to either make the Earth a paradise in the year 5000AD, or destroy it by 600AD...or something inbetween.

Every so often he decides to use a cheat to make things a bit easier or better and performs a miracle.

just because one is imortal doesnt mean one would be all knowing all powerfull. i think the human brain has so many limits. there's only so much you can do with only a few trillion brain cells. once you lived long enough youd start to forget old information in favor of new information. over countless millinia you personality would literally mutate  to reflect your current situational undertanding. to give you an idea i suggest reading Whargoul (http://www.oderus.com/words/NOVEL.html) , its a book by the lead singer of gwar, based off one of their songs (or vice versa). its a story about an imortal and very evil being who must feast on the brain juce of humans to survive. its kinda wierd and would make a good b movie.

"Dying without achieving your goals, or living on for years and realizing you will never achieve them. Which is worse ?"

"Hell...No way to know untill your dead"

While I dont mind a philosophical debate or you spamming my threads in general (I agree with most of what you've said so far;)) would it be possible to move this into PM or another thread?

Please dont derail this thread...at least, not today and not now.

I'm going to put this thread to rest now. Admins, you may delete or otherwise lock it if you wish. If an0n wishes to turn it into a philosophical debate on life and death, he may do so (free thread hijack).

I only wish to close it with this image. As I have not been able to bury my dog or say goodbye in reality, it may just be fitting for me to create a place for him in the Virtuality that is a Freespace2 mission and scene.

I've got nowhere else to go with this, so please forgive me. its 3:30 AM in the morning and i need to recover. im off to bed. Goodbye.
