Title: Look what I bought for 4.99
Post by: J3Vr6 on March 01, 2004, 01:56:54 pm
Went to the mall with my girl on Sunday and walked thru a computer store and found "Independence War 2, Edge of Chaos" for $4.99.  Since my computer was always so slow I never ever thought of getting this game.  Now with my upgraded computer, it seemed almost right to find the game :D

After Deus Ex Machina (which is funny, Goober!) I think I'll play it a little.  So far I loaded the first mission up and have to get used to not having the hat to look around...

Have fun playing. The main mission plotline annoyed me a little towards the end but the firing up my ship, going out there and causing a lot of trouble was fun :D

how do I just fly around without doing the plotline?  Instant action?  I tried that and was immediately attacked upon by like 2 ships.  There's no printed manual so I was trying to figure out the controls while getting pounded.  Ended up getting fustrated.

You have to do a little bit of the plotline but after about 3-4 missions you can just fly about in the tug and get yourself into stupidly large amounts of trouble :D

Too bad the tug's so bloody unmaneuverable. But yeah, just get out of that moronic kid stage, and into the moronic pirate stage, and it's basically clear going. You want to pick up some better hardware you'll have to jump through a few scripted hoops (literally in some cases, I think), but fortunately the really idiotic parts of the campaign are partly optional.

The Tug isn't unmanueverable. Its massive. That's why the game rocks. You feel like you're in a great lumbering beast of a tug boat. It really makes you appreciate the effects of inertia.

If you never flew the tug, when you got the AdPat you wouldn't be able to fly the damn thing. The Tug forces you to learn the skills that you'll need to be able to fly the hockey puck. :D

Are there any fighters in the game you can fly?  Or something light and maneuverable?  I know it's not Freespace, but I'm just wondering if there are other ships out there u can buy or steal or whtever.

The ? cruiser you get last is a bit dissapointing, tho.  Sure, you can load it up with cutting beams and slice pretty much anything in 2, but it's still a bit lacking in character.

Fighters suck. They're tin cans with cockpits. The AdPat is, however, the single greatest ship in the history of space combat games. Its got an excellent balance of weapons, manueverability, armor, speed and mass.

The Heavy Corvette is no slouch either. While it handles more like the tug, its weapons more than make up for that when it comes time to face off with larger capships.

Good find. I got IW1 for free on a magazine cover... :nervous:

But then again, the magazine cost more than $5. :D

****.. he has me beat.. I bought it new...
Some of the mods for it are really fun, provided they are done properly. The B5 mods are... odd... the Whitestar is basically the ComSec with uber weapons and crazy thrusters... Its no tougher...

Well, I'm getting fustrated a bit with the game.  I keep getting booted to desktop with no warning.  I don't think it's my drivers but I guess anything is possible.

I'm at the part where the kid (who's annoying) went to go get something at his dad's locker and get's captured by the police.  That was a pretty cool ship he had, sucks that he loses it.  Right when he gets out of prison and u gotta go to someones place to take off the stolen IFF, the game went to desktop and I couldn't save... argh.

Doing that, I also found that since the music is mp3 that they can have an incompatibility issue with divx.  Some instructions on how to change the priorities in audio compression in windows followed.

I went home to try it and have bigger problems, which will post soon.
