Title: Do you read the news?
Post by: Setekh on March 04, 2004, 08:03:31 am
Do you guys read the news? When I post ridiculously large news post like this (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/hlp/item_show.php?itm=627), I just hope people read them. So, do you? :)

I'd've gone for the second option if not for the fact that the 3rd is stolen from the Simpsons and thus becomes my automatic choice.

I check this forum and the freespace one. do I read the news? no. I sometimes check a highlight, if I'm bored.

I don't go to the front page that often but I set up Trillian Pro to use the RSS newsfeed so I guess I'm a yes :D

I changed my shorcut to point to the forums ater the front page won that award for slowest-loading website EVAR. So no, I don't read the news anymore

when i saw this topic, i thought it was the real news you watch on TV or read about in the newspaper.  then i thought to myself: "Does the Daily Show count as news?" :D

yes i read the HLP front page nooze.  were you thinking of bringing Jeeves back in your last little post?

I do not read the front page. I only read the forums. That might change if news stories were also put into a 'news' forum at the top of the forum list.

The main page takes a friggin' eternity to load. I changed all my links to lead straight to the forum about a month after the page switch, and haven't really looked at the frontpage since. At this point, it's mostly a "We have news?" sorta deal.

At this point, I think I find out about all that goes in there well before the newsposts appear anyway.

So some kind of integration between the forums and the main news would be helpful, since you could pick whichever flavour suits you best?

(Don't mind me, just hijacking the thread for a little customer research)

Speed up the HLP 2.0 stuff.  I honestly avoid it as much as I can, since it's so ridiculously slow compared to the forums.  Aren't they supposed to run on the same engine?

Goober: The difference probably being that the forums don't have 20,000 images per page. Although the pages themselces do seem pretty slow to load 'n render...

Loads perfectly normal for me (but then again, with my connection :p).

Anyway, I check it from time to time... :)

The problem with the loading time was fixed a while ago. It still has quite a few images, but those should be on your browser's cache after the first time you load the page (except for the featured picture and the highlights, that is). The main page only takes a couple of seconds to load for me.

Every now and then....I usually go straight to the forums main page though.

Styxx: But navigating through the HLP 2.0 stuff is 5-10 times slower for me than navigating through the main forum.

I never noticed the difference, but this is my dialup speaking really. :p That said, who else thinks a news forum would be helpful to them?

"funnilly" enough, HLP main page feels like being reloaded everytime I visit it, even when I go back to it with the back button... to the record, it's the only site I visist which does that.
I'm using mozilla 1.4, too.

I always read them with the 'Something NEW!' exclamation.
