Title: Yay! A Freespace animation!
Post by: Lt.Cannonfodder on March 04, 2004, 11:36:55 am
Well, here's something for you all. An animation of the first Shivan attack since the end of the Great War.

And of course a couple of images to encourage you to download :)

(http://3dactionplanet.com/hlp/hosted/14_year_war/LtCannonfodder/Shivan20270.jpg)

(http://3dactionplanet.com/hlp/hosted/14_year_war/LtCannonfodder/Shivan80481.jpg)

The animation is 1:35 long, 26Mb and uses DivX codec. There are minor errors here and there, but I hope you'll enjoy this :)

Big thanks to karajorma for providing hosting on his Swoosh account.

Downloading :)

Edit:

Dude! Excellent stuff, I really like it. There are a few things it could do with (everything lacks any particular lighting... it'd be nice to see flashes of weapons on the hull of ships, that kind of thing) but other than that. Very nice!

Well as you can guess from the download location I've already seen this and it's pretty damn good :)

I've also included a little extra in the rar file if you really like it :)

You know, I did consider adding light to the weapons, but I felt lazy and didn't bother to add a light to every single shot :p

Yeah, I can see how I'd reach the same conclusion in your position - but if you wanted to make a really neat job of it, go to town on the lighting / reflections on ships etc.

i don't have FS installed on my laptop, and  my desktop is busy trying to update steam, so Kara, what kind of campaign is this? a hacked file forwarding you to the proper mission?

and i have some problems, both  winamp 5 and WMP decide it is a audio file, and not video. winamp gives me no vid, and wmp gives a visualysation

Run Windows Update or get a new version of WinAmp, foo'.

winamp 5.01 on my desktop gives me the audio, and a still frame of the video, and when i move the slider thingy it gives me another still frame, while playing the audio.

edit: and winamp eats 50 megs of RAM while attempting to play.

You do have DivX installed, right?

yeah, wmp even downloaded a codec from the internet.

my desktop machine does play it, but the video lags behind the audio, the audio quality itself is terrible, and the image stutters about every 3 seconds, each stutter taking 0,5 seconds.

That sounds exactly like what was happening when I first tried to export the video from Premiere Pro. No matter what I did the video was always acting up like that. The only way I got around it was by using an older version of Premiere.

BSPlayer, Media Player Classic and the ffdshow-codec are your friends, people. Those three usually fix any DivX problems.

1. Trails are modeled not made with paricle effects dus they dont turn
2. ships move a  bit slow
3. stuff dosent blow off ships

;)

Media player won't download Divx from the net. It will pretend to but it won't actually fix anything. You need to actually go to the Divx site and get Divx (5.05 is better than 5.11 from what I hear)

It's basically the standard FS2 campaign file but now if you play FS2_open (using a version with working video code) and have this animation in the Freespace2 folder it will play it before A Lion at the Door as if it was another cutscene :D

 I was going to add The Lightning Marshal version of The Great Hunt too but I couldn't remember the name used for the avi (I renamed mine IIRC)

you might want to get all the permissions, and throw that into the media VP.

anyhow, i am giving up on this, now i'm concentrating on getting Steam or FS2 vanilla to work. I WANT A WORKING MULTIPLAYER GAME.

It's pretty good, but most of the fighteres move a bit too slow.
And what prog did you make it in? :)

Great job, though! :yes:

Everyone getting ****ed-up decompressions: ONLY USE WINRAR TO EXTRACT IT!

**** like WinACE has old RAR decompression thingies and bones extractions.

Worked fine for me using WinRAR. I did have a problem uploading the bugger (it just stuck at 100%) so I simply closed the FTP program and tested the archive by downloading it. I was able to play the movie fine so I really can't figure out what the problem is.

Some suggestions:

1) Use the my new thruster effects, these old ones are crappy compared to them. (download link: check first link of my sig)

2) Have the size of the engine effects change, it looks too static.

3) speed up the action - everything seems soo slow :)

4) Add sound effects (thruster, engine sounds, etc etc)

Bah, now you did it. I'll redo everything :D

Anyway, I'm off to make another version. I'll add lights to the weapons and try to make the thrusters better. I'm not sure about speeding up the action. The ships move pretty much at the same speed as in Fs2. I might do something about that, though.

And LS, there are engine sounds :D

Thanks for the feedback.

opened it fine,

that thing is great, only sudgestion would be to vary the fly by sounds a lot more than you did (the pitch) and to just generaly make the things move faster, also sound effects should be roughly twice as loud as they are, and specmap those things!

and the myrmadon weapon points are wrong

saw this movie - great stuff.
Only suggestions I can mentioned have been mentioned already, except 1:

Keep the last bit with the Myrmidon going slow and the weapons passing by - it looks sorta Matrix style. Maybe speeding it up after it dodges the laser blast speed it up again? Space Matrix sounds kinda fun ;)

Thanks for the feedback! :)

I'm working on the new version, but rendering takes time. In fact, it takes ages ;) I'll try to fix most of the things you've mentioned.

@Bobboau

The ships have specmaps :p LW just handles everything differently and DivX alway takes away certain details. I have improved the ships a bit in the next version, should be a bit better. And no, I don't care if the firing points of Myrmidon are incorrect (bloody nitpickers ;) )

@Singh

Space Matrix? You can be sure I didn't intend to do that :D

@Everyone with download problems

The download still works here, altough it's a bit slow (12kb/s). Could you suggest a better hosting then, because I'm not aware of any that I can use for free (26Mb is quite a big file, you know).

Hmmm. I get it at steady 50,2 kbps [yes, I have a crappy connection].

And Firefox seemed somewhat repulsive with it, so I tried rigth click -> save link as. And it works fine.

Edit: finished and watched.

A bit too slow-paced in my opinion. Needs more frantic Myrm/Mara action. Like the dogfights - missiles here and there, ships pouring dozens of shot everywhere, AAAf zapping ---

OK, I think I'll go to make these animations. But first I must learn it.

My only gripe is the lack of muzzle flashes..
I know theyre supposed to be lasers, but it just seems... dull without them...
What program?
Title: Yay! A Freespace animation!
Post by: Lt.Cannonfodder on March 08, 2004, 10:56:29 am
@Janos

I'm already making the anim more fast-paced and maybe add a few more things. If you'd know how much work making an anim takes, you wouldn't even start ;)

@Bobboau

Ok, ok. Tell me where firing points are and I'll fix it.

@Thorn

Hmmm... muzzle flashes. I'll have to think about those.

The anim is entirely rendered in Lightwave, put together in Adobe Premiere.
