You know what's funny? I used to work in that building. That's my local cable company and I used to be a cable guy for them.

The truly entertaining thing is that they can still do this. The wireless LAN is completely unsecured in that building and any internal IP can post updates to the ticker. All you have to do is walk by with a laptop, an 802.11b card, and you'll be given a DHCP address and you're in. After that its just a matter of exploring the network, finding the ticker server (hint, its called 'ticker').

You'd think given the trouble to exploit holes like this people would at least think of something better than l33tspeak jokes.

But yeah, not bad. I wanna hack a ticker with some made-up headline about a nuclear strike on Vancouver, just to see what happens.

reminds me, i have a laptop with build in WLAN card, and in classroom in school, where we're near the janitors house, i get internet through a standard windows network outside the school proxy.
normally, i just get internet in the physics dept, through a POS proxy.

i am also reminded of that story about those guys taking a chopper, a WLAN enabled laptop, and a large city (dunno wich).

they could look through credit card data, personal dept's files, and all sorts of other fun stuff.

Doing this is extremely easy, and if the network is unprotected, they diserve to be 'hacked' i thats what you want to call this.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried reverse hacking? Set up a wireless network and wait for someone to try to hack you. Then go in and steal all their stuff/wipe their hard drive :D

They wouldn't even have a legal complaint cause they could say that since the computer was on your network you thought you owned it :D

an0n is correct. Hacker is the right term to use. HAckers were the dudes in the 70s that did wonderfull things with their computers, none of them being illegal (mostly)

u  probably alll know about this tho :P

Bah. Hackers are anyone with indepth knowledge of technology, who can use it for purposes other than those the manufacturer intended.

I'd consider that guy on The Forum who turned his microwave into a death-ray to be a hacker.

The smart thing to do is to rent a laptop.

That way it's all insured and **** and you can upgrade to the latest model periodically.
