I have an old system (PII 500 + GF2 MX) and it seems that many of the games that were written when this was an average system have started to hit the UK stores as budget titles. By budget I mean 5ukp & 4ukp a shot. I'd like to know which of these are worth buying? Should I for instance be picking up the likes of Homeworld and Star Trek Armada? What are the best budget titles out there at the moment?

Total Annihilation. The full set.
-
Sam & Max (very old, granted - but genius). A Worms game.
-
Independence War 2: Edge of Chaos and Baldur's Gate.
-
take a look i'd say, lotsa choice there, just do some surfing, check marks and don't be afraid to try something new.

Tachyon
Any pre-Renegade C&C game
HardWar
-
There's loads that I'd recommend, but most of them are all DOS-based and I haven't seen a DOS game in UK stores for years.
You might want to try
System Shock 2
Definitely TA, as ChronoReverse suggested (still the best RTS today)
The Baldur's Gate series if you're a RPG fan
TIE Fighter (not sure if you can get this outside a collectors pack)
Master of Orion
Fallout 1 and 2
-
Hostile Waters. There's even a thread about it hereabouts :)
-
Sudden Strike
Klingon Academy
Starcraft
Quake?
-
Oh yes here's a really old one that I love and hate: X-Com (and X-Com2 Terror from the Deep)
-
Homeworld is possibly the most beautiful gaming experience I've ever had. Well worth getting IMHO.
Got hostile waters the other day too as well as Shogun total war, delta force 2 and I-war 2. Goth them all for 11 quid which is pretty darn cheap if I do say so myself. :)

Planescape: Torment
ANY C&C up to and including Renegade, which is a blast online.
Diablo
ST:V Elite Force
Homeworld
HW: Cataclysm
Dark Reign Series
Quake Series
Unreal & UT
Make sure you patch Torment, there's a nasty slowdown bug that shows up randomly.
-
Thief: The Dark Project
Thief II: The Metal Age
Wing Commander: Prophecy
No One lives forever
-
Arkanoid :nervous:
Ok now seriously... for that system... I'd say StarCraft and BW (it isn't a PC if it hasn't got these two) and maybe Neverwinter...
PS:
I thought PII were only up to 450MHz...
-
Monkey Island 3
Worms
Deus Ex
-
Planescape: Torment
Master of Orion 1 or 2
Thief 1 or 2
Deus Ex 1
Homeworld
X-Com
-
sim city 3000 :D
hehe
-
Descent 3 (or earlier)
Warzone 2100
-

They are. Probably forgot the third I. P1/MMX up to 233, P2 to 450, P3 to 1.13, P4 from there on.
-
If you can get it to run, then "Descent 3". i only started playing it (actually PLAYING it...) about 2-3 weeks ago, and it's awesome!
-
Hmm... Half-Life?

back on topic:
I'd go with:
Shogo: M.A.D.
Diablo
Duke Nukem 3D(Get the Starship Troopers Total Conversion!)
StarFleet Command 1 or 3 (heck get both! That's what I have)
Homeworld or HW: C
-
ONI,
Imperium Galactica 2
KOTOR (wait, that's not new.. :nervous: )
Arcanum
Aliens Vs Predator 1, 2
System shock 2

Hoo boy, see you in a week when you finally tear yourself away from the computer. ;)
-
yah, hostile waters is another worthy game..
-
Gah! I hate Hostile Waters! I was supposed to be getting a bloody paper done but it's always "no, just one more level", and then to add insult to injury every goddamn scene in it's better-looking than any goddamn render I've ever done... I swear, soon as I finish this game... and maybe Anachronox... I'm gonna take up something more healthy, like heroin.

Even now, after all these years, whenever I hear the main theme thingy I get the almost uncontrolable urge to drop to my knees, throw my arms to heavens and scream "KHARAAAAKKKK!!!!".
*wells up*

Cool Stealth, what's your alias - We should play :)
-
Unfortunately my friend borrowed me his copy of Zelda:Ocarina of time so I might not get to play hostile waters for a while. :)

You're on tenuous ground there, iirc.
I can't remember if the admins here like HOTU being posted or not.
-
Well they whore it out often enough when people come looking for copies of FS2.
-
Meh, is it legal?
-
according to HOTU it is.

Why is it I can never get a straight answer :P Are 3DAP likely to mind people linking to it from any of their host sites? That's the whole reasoning behind our stance on piracy of software. Personally speaking I don't mind at all.
-
We don't give you a straight answer because doing so is somewhat detrimental to our own interests.
And We'll take that as a green light.
*starts selling pirated copies of Freelancer from within the closed Hosted forums*
-
You have a forum of your own to tout your illegal software on, there's no need to use ours. I thought it was made clear before that a certain standard has to be kept up so as not to piss off our own hosts?
-
You realise the irony, I hope.
And what fun would it be doing it from NW?
It'd be like target practice with laser-guided bullets. No risk, no skill, no fun.
-
And no making more work for the admins here either :p
Look, shall we drag this back on topic now? If you want to discuss this stuff then PM me.

*looks at weak, pathetic Athlon 1800+*
SHUT UP YOU!;)
-
An Athlon 1800 isn't pathetic. I still use an Athlon 1gHz. These days your CPU isn't limiting you, its the video card.

He ain't. Biggest demand in games tends to be the graphics nowadays - and that's primarily dependent on the card.

Seconded. My P4 1.4 1.0 GB DDR RAM would run X^2 fine if my video card wasnt a piece of ****.
-
These guys have a point - they aren't calling them GPUs for no reason... most games offload all the graphical workload to the graphics card, leaving the CPU to load stuff, run AI and what have you. Unfortunately the greatest of the graphics cards are still kinda expensive for college students ;)
-
My Mobo, processor and RAM together cost less than a Radeon 9800 Pro.....
-
Anyway........................
StarCraft & Brood War
Age of Empires (the original)
FreeSpace 2 (not really that old but...)
Rogue Squadron
Call to Power 2
Madden 98 ;)
Flight Unlimited (before they went under to MSFlight Simulator)
couple others that I can't remember right now...

Yes, and we all know about the Athlon 64 too.

This week, I are been mostly buying Terry Pratchett's Discworld Noir, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, and something calling itself Mist, in a three for ten squids offer
-
Actually I've only got a 2500XP Liberator. *shrugs*

actually it's the cores that make a difference, so don't feel bad :D
-
Clive Barker's Undying, Gunman Chronicles and Soldier of Fortune.
Not sure about the required specs on them though.

I don't think they're a prudent purchase at the moment, especially considering that I only really want a rig for games, movies and the web.
Greywolf knows a lot about A64's maybe it is he that has one?

-
Actually, if you're willing to shell out for any processor above P4 2.8C (which is the highest I'd go atm if I had money, until the 939 pin A64 comes out that is), then the A64's start to look pretty good. Especially the A64 3000+ which is pretty much a steal considering it's cost.
-
I'd wait for a dedicated 64-bit O/S - and enough market penetration to guarentee complete support (a question of 'when' rather than 'if)
-
And why would you need to do that? The A64 3000+ is both cheaper and performs better at games than the P3 3.0C in normal 32bit windows.
I've already stated I'd prefer to get a 2.8C or 2.6C but if you're willing to shell out for a P4 3.2C, then a A64 3000+ would be a better choice.

I don't see any point in paying over the odds for a processor whose performance is still hampered by software standards. It's like buying a 3d card designed for 8x AGP and slapping it on 4x AGP - sure, it's still better... not the difference that there should be.
By the time 64 bit becomes suitably supported, these chips will have gone down in price - and you'll still get improved performance compared to an 32-bit Os.
Personally, I wouldn't touch any Intel chips with a 10-foot clown pole, though. .. and it's a moot point - I'm not touching this Pc till at least the end of the year, when I may spare cash floating about (fingers crossed)
