Title: What old games are worth buying
Post by: IPAndrews on March 06, 2004, 04:00:39 pm
I have an old system (PII 500 + GF2 MX) and it seems that many of the games that were written when this was an average system have started to hit the UK stores as budget titles. By budget I mean 5ukp & 4ukp a shot. I'd like to know which of these are worth buying? Should I for instance be picking up the likes of Homeworld and Star Trek Armada? What are the best budget titles out there at the moment?

take a look i'd say, lotsa choice there, just do some surfing, check marks and don't be afraid to try something new.

There's loads that I'd recommend, but most of them are all DOS-based and I haven't seen a DOS game in UK stores for years.

You might want to try

System Shock 2
Definitely TA, as ChronoReverse suggested (still the best RTS today)
The Baldur's Gate series if you're a RPG fan
TIE Fighter (not sure if you can get this outside a collectors pack)
Master of Orion
Fallout 1 and 2

[color=66ff00]Homeworld is possibly the most beautiful gaming experience I've ever had. Well worth getting IMHO.

Got hostile waters the other day too as well as Shogun total war, delta force 2 and I-war 2. Goth them all for 11 quid which is pretty darn cheap if I do say so myself. :)

Planescape: Torment
ANY C&C up to and including Renegade, which is a blast online.
Diablo
ST:V Elite Force
Homeworld
HW: Cataclysm
Dark Reign Series
Quake Series
Unreal & UT

Make sure you patch Torment, there's a nasty slowdown bug that shows up randomly.

Ok now seriously... for that system... I'd say StarCraft and BW (it isn't a PC if it hasn't got these two) and maybe Neverwinter...

PS:
I thought PII were only up to 450MHz...

Gah! I hate Hostile Waters! I was supposed to be getting a bloody paper done but it's always "no, just one more level", and then to add insult to injury every goddamn scene in it's better-looking than any goddamn render I've ever done... I swear, soon as I finish this game... and maybe Anachronox... I'm gonna take up something more healthy, like heroin.

Why is it I can never get a straight answer :P Are 3DAP likely to mind people linking to it from any of their host sites? That's the whole reasoning behind our stance on piracy of software. Personally speaking I don't mind at all.
Title: What old games are worth buying
Post by: an0n on March 07, 2004, 03:38:18 pm
We don't give you a straight answer because doing so is somewhat detrimental to our own interests.

And We'll take that as a green light.

You have a forum of your own to tout your illegal software on, there's no need to use ours. I thought it was made clear before that a certain standard has to be kept up so as not to piss off our own hosts?

He ain't.  Biggest demand in games tends to be the graphics nowadays - and that's primarily dependent on the card.

These guys have a point - they aren't calling them GPUs for no reason... most games offload all the graphical workload to the graphics card, leaving the CPU to load stuff, run AI and what have you. Unfortunately the greatest of the graphics cards are still kinda expensive for college students ;)

Actually, if you're willing to shell out for any processor above P4 2.8C (which is the highest I'd go atm if I had money, until the 939 pin A64 comes out that is), then the A64's start to look pretty good.  Especially the A64 3000+ which is pretty much a steal considering it's cost.
Title: What old games are worth buying
Post by: aldo_14 on March 08, 2004, 05:34:35 pm
I'd wait for a dedicated 64-bit O/S - and enough market penetration to guarentee complete support (a question of 'when' rather than 'if)
Title: What old games are worth buying
Post by: ChronoReverse on March 08, 2004, 06:11:10 pm
And why would you need to do that?  The A64 3000+ is both cheaper and performs better at games than the P3 3.0C in normal 32bit windows.

I've already stated I'd prefer to get a 2.8C or 2.6C but if you're willing to shell out for a P4 3.2C, then a A64 3000+ would be a better choice.

I don't see any point in paying over the odds for a processor whose performance is still hampered by software standards.  It's like buying a 3d card designed for 8x AGP and slapping it on 4x AGP - sure, it's still better... not the difference that there should be.

By the time 64 bit becomes suitably supported, these chips will have gone down in price - and you'll still get improved performance compared to an 32-bit Os.

Personally, I wouldn't touch any Intel chips with a 10-foot clown pole, though. .. and it's a moot point - I'm not touching this Pc till at least the end of the year, when I may spare cash floating about (fingers crossed)
