So a few months ago I noticed my Neverwinter Nights play disc had a small crack in it. I suspected it came like that. I used it about 4 times before I noticed it (retards at EB dont know what the hell theyre doing). It was nothing major. Not even half a centimeter long, starting from the inside. I (wisely) made a backup right then.
Last night I went to re-install it, and it wouldnt even acknowledge the fact that there was a disc in the drive. I take it out and look at it. From the top it looks like the crack gets as far as the data area then stops. From the bottom it extends halfway through the disc. So I find the backup. Pop it in. Game installs fine. Wont run the game though.
****.
If it wasnt for the fact that the expansion discs can run the game I'd be torching a few EB stores.

CDs are freaky. My really, really old TIE Fighter CD, for example, is totally ruined and scarred, which does not matter since I've got a pickup.
It runs fine.
Then, on the other hand, my older Operation Flashpoint (not even GOTY or Res version) got a really small scratch and refused to play at all. Guess old CDs are tougher than the new one?
-
Newer games tend to use more of the cd, tho.
-
It goes without saying though that many producers are trying to get away with using lower grade CDs to cut costs. Considering the base price of a blank CD to them - this is entirely unacceptable.
(If that's not bad enough, some companies are charging for replacement disks to be shipped).
-
One or two of the disk batches that Atari made of Neverwinter were significantly weaker than they should have been.
You got off comparitively luck, aldo. I've heard tales of some disks self-destructing in the drive.
Contact Atari and see if they'll replace it, since it was their error they probably will.
-
You cant see it in the first, but you can in the second.

That is one wide crack. If it was anything close to that bad before, naturally you would have lost some important data in the transfer to backup. There's probably a noCD crack for the game, though- I presume you had the good sense to do a full install, right?
-
The crack hadnt reached the data surface when I backed it up luckily. Like I said. I can run the game with the SoU or HotU CD anyway...
-
Jesus that game is long. I've had it for about 2 months and i'm still in the third chapter. And I havent even started on the first expansion...
My FS2 Disk 2 did this a while back. Was thinking of buying a new set until a friend found his set and let be burn backups. I suggest you do the same.
-
That title reminded me of:
"To me, coming from you, 'friend' is a four letter word..."
-
one piece of advice, don't try to keep it in the player, you might end up with a CD that no defragmentation program can save, and a CD/DVD player that is ripped to shreds.
-
2 months and you haven't finished the first campaign? What are you playing as, a fish?
-
I've had that happen to some of my discs too, and not much to do about it really.. =/
but if you got a backup of it some time ago then it sohuld be all good :)
(minus the fact that the disc is ****ed..)

yes drill holes in it and throw it at other people, or watch them cry when you destroy what they think is a perfectly good cd for a game that they want ;)
