We haven't had one of these in a while either.
What is your single favorite movie and why?
Mine is Patton, a fairly accurate depiction of the greatest General in the history of the United States Army.
-
some consider patton to be a genious, others consider him to be a border-line nut case
-
[l]Street Fighter[/l]
The Passion
:drevil:
-
The Hunt For Red October...
The book was better (one of the few good Clancy novels), but the movie was pretty damn good too...
-
i agree with you there Thorn.
-
I don't know, there are so many so close. for now i'll just say The Time Machine (2002)
-
Gladiator. *slips back into deep seclusion*
-
Tarkovsky's Solaris.
Beautiful, thought provoking, and very well acted.
-
Gladiator came out on video at a time when the TV people cut off the service to my house. So I ended up watching it like 7 times in a period of a few days. Good times :):)
And I can't make up my mind about my all-time fave, but among the top ten would be Fight Club, American History X, K2, Atlantis, White Men Can't Jump (early 90s was the bomb) and some others.
-
Hrmmm there's a lot of good ones:
2001
2010 (A different type of movie than 2001, but it's still fun. Big clunky Russian spaceship! Yay!)
Red October
The Time Machine (Both versions, 60s and 2000s)
Solaris (Both versions, original and "remake")
...and of course the worst movie ever made:
Plan 9 From Outer Space!
...actually add Tim Burton's "Ed Wood" on to the list of good but quirky movies.
-
Lost in Space :shaking: :nervous:
*runs*
-
about 50 movies share that place of "favourite movie", for me...
-
Agreed, Venom, I'm able to enjoy most movies. Dunno, the one that leaps to mind right now is The English Patient.

I do wish they'd get around to making a Red Storm Rising movie. I'd be so pleased to see that, I could even forgive them for casting Ben Affleck.
-
The Anachronox Movie.

Yeah man, I loved that book. Rainbow Six too, great works by Clancy.
-
The Shawshank Redemption
At the top of my top 10 líst.
-
Like Venom and Setekh I have many movies and I all enjoy them one hell of a lot. But for the sake of choosing a handful...
Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan:
Perhaps the single greatest space battle scene ever - especially considering its time. Masterful.
Akira:
Feature length anime goodness. Can be slow in places but it's a great movie anyway.
Donnie Darko:
I don't think I need to go into this ;)
Amelie:
Who'd have thought such a great film could come from France? Well I didn't... but it did anyway. I'm tempted to describe it as "charming".
Hannibal:
Anthony Hopkins just rocks.
28 Days Later:
Apocalyptic zombie fests with great filming techniques and a badass soundtrack to go with it. Virtual unknowns of the film industry shine.
Evil Dead 2:
Give me back my haaaaand!
The Matrix:
'nuff said.
There are more obviously - but I don't want to go to far.

Calm down, I just don't know of any other French films of such high quality. The same could be said of England as well

-
Pretty much  There may be other good French movies, but I haven't heard of them :p
-
What is your single favorite movie?
about 60 diffrent movies
-

Agreed. I know I'm not very well-versed in international film. Except for maybe the CG stuff ;)
-
Mortal Kombat! :nervous:
Actually anything with good special fx, and preferably spaceships, I'm not a demanding customer ;)
-
Die Hard 2. **** blows up, has planes.
-
first one that came into mind was citizen kane. and then the blues brothers. got a lot of other favourites too, tho.
-
Offhand, it's a toss up between;
Face
Saving Private Ryan
Muppets in Space
LOTR: The fellowship..etc
-

Well, try anything by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, for a start.
Everything is not goody-goody like Amélie ( they've shorten the name in english? ) is, but it's always funny, and often impressive.
ANd you have that weird picture direction, that you could experience more or less in Alien4, and that he likes a lot.
-
Too many good movies, I'll just name a few..
Fight Club
Stalker
Alien(s)
High Fidelity
Donnie Darko
Starship Troopers
and so on, and so on, and so on.

Nikita is French, right? Damn fine movie.
And my all time favorite must be The Devil's Advocate. Kickass movie, kickass ending. Even the credits are kickass.

So is the Fith Element, btw ( I don't it like much, but heh ).

I was going to mention that one. The Hollywood remake was rubbish in comparison.

yeay. luc besson is probably my fav director. I think I've wathced leon and the fifth element about a million times. haven't wathced nikita as much, tho, as I don't have it on dvd or vhs or anything. same with the taxi movies.
-
Insane! You're ALL insane!! How could you forget THE BEST MOVIE - EVAR!
The Princess Bride!!!
-
LOL Go Mark Knopfler ;)
Actually, if I remember rightly two awesome movies, i.e. Leon and the Big Blue were both directed by a French director, and the music was done by the same person who did the Fifth Element, and also happens to be French ;)

would it be this Click (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093779/)
I can't say nothing about I seen it but long ago

It's got to be Get Shorty.

The Taxi movies are not from Besson, they're from Gérard Pirès. Besson coproduced, and that's it. Well maybe he wrote the story too actually, but that's nothing to be so proud of :doubt:

And now that other people mention them, Princess Bride and Blues Brothers are also among my faves.
The thing with Princess Bride is that I saw it when I was like 6 years old and I kept quoting from it for the next 10+ years but I never knew which movie it was from. Then I finally saw it a few years ago and I was like "Oh so thats where I got it from".
The Big Lebowski
-
Matrix and anything Stanley Kubrik made...
-
Erm, can't give one favourite, but here's some pretty damn good 'uns:
The Big Lebowski
Fargo
Brother, Where Art Thou?
Full Metal Jacket
Leon
Vertigo
Terminator 2
El Cid (good film, but Charlton Heston is a tit)
Pulp Fiction (best Tarantino film)
Er.... there's loads more, but I can't think of them right now....
EDIT: Ooh! And Pirates of the Caribbean, purely because of Johnny Depp's awesome acting.
-
A red storm rising movie would ****ing rock, though it would have to be a trilogy.
Good for us Brits cos clancy waxes lyrical about the British forces ( be good to see a cold war movie even mention the BAOR) :)
-
Tom Clancy absolutely rules when talking about conflicts... Too bad he's getting really pro Bush in his books
-
From what I understand, he's always be extremely pro-American. Its just that Bush happens to be a bit more to a military writer's liking than for example Clinton.
Oh and, how could I forget.
Big Blue
-
Yes, but in his last books he's starting to write like the republican party...

you have exceptionally good taste for a sci-fi action game board..
-
"O' Brother Where Art Thou" is one of the best films I've ever seen, as is "The Big Lebowski"
Also, I don't think anyones even mentioned Taxi Driver yet, oh and the Shawshank Redemption kicks an unholy amount of ass.
-
Silence of the Lambs - better than its 'prequel' and sequel.
As Good as it Gets - probably Jack Nicholson's best film ever!
Gladiator - tops everything I can think of for overall cinematic quality
And the anime 'film' award has to go to Ghost in the Shell for me.
-
ginger snaps! lesser known, but a very well made and scripted horror flick, quite intelligent too.
'existence', with a french accent on the last e. Great sci-fi stuff, leaves you thinking.
Im into the whole well scripted low budget movies thing, they are usually the best as directors tend to get carried away with large budgets and rely heavily on the special effects and action scenes, just look at the latter two matrix films - a load of tosh.
-
These are the films we watch over and over in this gaff:
Stargate
Alien
Aliens
Dark City
Terminator 2
Starship Troopers
Event Horizon (even though listing this one here usually gets me shouted at)
Matrix
13th Warrior
Predator
Independance Day (lost our copy, BOO!)
LotR
-
ah, yeah, Dark City is neat.
-
Big Trouble in Little China
(I'm in a silly mood)
-

Go watch Gymkata, Wizards of the Lost Kingdom, and Inseminoid. Actually read the IMDB user comments for al of them. They'll crack you up. :D

Hmmm... Princess Bride is close to being my fav, but I think I'll have to say:
[glow=red]Return of the Jedi[/glow]
It's that final lightsaber fight that gets me, Luke vs Darth, it's just... awesome.

this is my..BOOMSTICK! :D
as for fav movies...there so many
*goes off to think about what movies which really are his absolute favourites*
-
The Big Lebowski for me as well.
Watch it with surround sound. The bowling alley ambience is wicked... :)
Cheers!
-
The Last Starfighter.
Awesome concept, well executed and a theme tune to kill for.
As for good french films, check out Delicatessen (www.imdb.com/title/tt0101700), that movie was a blinder.
I'm also quite partial to Hero.

Anyone ever notice the plot similarities to The Matrix? I doubt that the matrix was copied from Dark City but on paper they are remarkably similar. Yet they are completely different films when watched :D

Oh, how could I forget? Agreed, Hero rocked.
-
Hard choices... ok, I'll pick Blade Runner (DC) -- for this round..
Story, scenery, weirdness, love. There you go.
-
Matrix-obviously
Dead Man Walking-great acting by Susan Sarandon and Shawn
Penn
Apollo 13- great story, general interestingness
-
Inseminoid was great!
-
Hrmm yeah I guess on the list I do have to add:
The Fifth Element
Dr. Strangelove
Aliens
Stargate
-
Especially the "Once upon a time in China" series I-V, though I only saw 1-3 in English releases.
If you poeple loved Iron MOnkey...(spoiler)

You no doubt know the kid has to survive cause that character is little Wong Fe Hung and he has to grow up and make the other 5 movies as Jet Li! I thought it was cute to see his father wielding the umbrella he inherits as an adult. And the impenitrable skin technique kicked ass!
some other tied for (best movie)
The two fav disney movies I like TRON & The Black Hole
last Starfighter
Starship troopers
Voyage into Space (aka Johnny Sokko and the flying robot, aka Giant Robo 1969, obviously inspired the 2001 Iron Giant movie)
Star Blazers
Vengence of the space Pirate
KRULL
Conan
HAWK The SLAYER (gotta love Jack Palance)
The Magnificent Seven
Legend of the Eight Samurai
MANJIN (The giant Japanese God/Avatar/Golem that KICKS ASS!)
and about 1000 other movies I don't have room for ;7
oh and I only liked texas Chainsaw massacre II cause it wasw like Renee Zellwigger's first film role and she was ultra hot back then. :p
