After close to two years and 18000 photos on my point-and-shoot Sony 2MP digicam, I've finally upgraded - to Sandwich's camera, the Sony DSC-V1. Ahhhh, the control! With all the manual controls I have at my disposal now, I feel like for months I've been trying to run with my shoelaces tied. :)
Here's one of the first shots I took on my shiny new V1. Man, it's awesome.
So, anyone with suggestions on places to go to get some shots with a camera that can do (almost) anything? ;)
-
AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
:eek2: ... mommy...
Congratulations Steak - she looks damn fine indeed. And that rose is beautiful! How much was it?
-
try to take a shot of the Spirit of tasmania III ;)
-
:D
Cheers about the rose. Well, strictly speaking, it cost AUD$2 - but it was part of a dozen my sister got from her boyfriend. Oh, and Sandwich asked if I'd edited it - I hadn't. But I did play around with lighting a bit when I took the shot:
-
dude, you're pro
-
the rose is awesome.
-
Thanks, guys. The tones this thing can put out... it's just breathtaking.
Heh, btw Kal, the camera cost AUD$990. Bargained down from AUD$1200. :D
-
duuuuudeee......
duuuuuuuuuuudeeeee.....
-
I'd say whoa! except I've toggled 'no pictures' in my browser. :p Got a name for it, Steakman?
-
Okay, I just took these shots outside - it's about 10pm at night. 30-second exposures... they rock so much... :)
-
Nice, really really nice :nod::yes:
-
Those pics are sweet.
-
Thanks, guys. :) Man, this is just so much fun... wait till I get onto the Sydney Harbour Bridge at sunrise.
-
I'll wait until you get pics of chicks :p
-
Nico raises a point, you live in Australia. Despite how you may feel about it - we want pics! ;)
-
You f00s... :p Anyway, it's too late. It's Autumn now, so the beach season is pretty much over - you'll have to wait until December, at the very least. :p
-
At the risk of causing outrage... girls can look pretty while still wearing clothes y'know!
-

-
Touche. But then, why come to Australia? I'm sure you Europeans have plenty of girls over there with their clothes on. :p
-
for a change :p
anyway, you may have L33t skills and tools, but you don't have my reflexes:
what do you mean I'm cheating? :p
-
Reflexes? You call those reflexes? The least you could do is get close to the action :p :D
-
That's not close, this is close:
-
Try to take a photo of your new camera with your new camera!! :p
The second photo... the rose... oh man... very very cool!!
-
ROFLMAO
yeah i can edit stuff in PS too ;)
-
... Man, you suck. Stealin' my thunder. :p
And where the HELL did you get those lights? They ain't studio flashes, but like hell you just had 'em lying around...
-
Steak nice lightning photoshop
PS: the best lightning shots are middle length exposure (1/24s < x < 1sec) - taken on a camera on a tripod with a thumb clicker - from LP (Low Precipitation) storms
--------
If i hadn't learned to program I would have been a field research meterologist (laymens: a storm chaser with a PhD)
-
Storm chasing kicks ass... though I have a tainted view of it (Twister anyone?)
Stryke.. I think that lighting setup could be bought for about 40 pounds in a good hardware store? Just looks like a few lamps with clamps on metal stands...
-
Thunder: Uhm, I'm guessing not. Standard tungsten lightbulbs make most photos very yellow, and compensating generally takes a lot of color saturation out of the image. The picture is neither yellow nor desaturated. Unless his camera has some fancy color balancing functions, in which case he sucks that much more.
-
those lights look very common to some i've seen in homes over here. a 5 foot high stand, with three or four lights coming off it, which can be rotated around. they light up a room really nice. the guy i used to work for, he used to use it to take pictures of stuff too, by just focusing all the lights at whatever he wanted to take pictures of :D :)
Nico and Setekh: I think you guys should have a photoshop render battle :D
-
Now _I_ wanna get a tripod (.com)! :p
-
You utter, utter bastard. :p
I need money. Lots of money. Or better shoplifting skills.....
Some nice piccies there. Looks like you're having fun. ;)
-
tripods............ good. mmmmm
nice camera too :)
-
Stryke and Kal/Stealth, you're half right. Yes, Stealth, those are ordinary stands, which I actually did pick up from my local hardware store. However, as Stryke notes, those are not ordinary lightbulbs. I garnered the lights from school, though, when I left last year, from our photography department - which is closing down for lack of students picking the subject.:( We just used to call them "hot lights", but if I remember right, they were 600-watt quartz halogen flood lamps. Damn, damn bright, but more importantly, their colour temperature is close to daylight, something like 5500K. That's why there are hardly any noticeable colour casts.
Sandwich: Inside joke acknowledged. :D
Here's another shot. I almost walked into this wolf spider, scared the living daylights out of me. Warning, it's the size of my desktop.
-
cute, but you should have taken the other side, coz the eyes man, we can't see the eyes.
Spider eyes are scary.
-
Yikes, you're not getting us into that again. You're absolutely right, they're terrifying. :shaking:
Actually, now that you mention it different angles, I'm not sure if I like this one better:
-
And now it's the size of my desktop. Go figure
-
Very impressive... though I wouldn't want to go to near it... how big are those things (in real life)?
-
That spider looks as it were designed by the Shivans. ;)
Its shape and those tentacles.
-
Jesus Christ, I was just listening to OST of 28 Days Later.
I will now officially freak out,
-
ok you got a gym membership?
1.) bring camera
2.) accidently walk into ladies locker room
3.) camera accidently goes off.. (multiple times)
problem solved...
;7 WE WANT AUSSIE FLESH!!!
-
Damn nice photos Steak:)
btw, I have similar digi camera (I don't know if it's same or older
It was gift) but I think it's same
-
Meh... The DSC-V1 is pretty much equivalent to my camera in picture size and quality. I guess it's personal preference between the two, myself I prefer an SLR with a wider aperture, hence the Olympus E-20p:
-
Steakman....those are some sweet pictures. And a totally cool camera...I wish I had one like that.
Nevertheless, we still demand that you update The Array! ;7
-
He's right, its been to long ;)
-
i could never get into photography. i took a class but all my pictures were blurry. but i do have a picture of a pregnant cat:D
(http://www.angelfire.com/ak3/nukewar/pregnoid.jpg)
and the cat that impregnated her
(http://www.angelfire.com/ak3/nukewar/screwball.jpg)
enjoy:D
-
AAAAAHHHH the eyes! the eyes!
demon cat!
-
unfortunately i dint have any batteries in the camera durring the impregnation, otherwise it would be like watching animal planet.
-
And you'd get off on that, wouldn't you?
-
nobody else has documented the mating rituals of demon cats
-
-
Dude, your cat looks glazed.
-
I still maintain that dogs are just as evil...
(note: apologies for the photo quality, the camera was setup for a different purpose at the time).
-
do you have ny pictures of you demon dog's mating habbits :D
-
keep in mind, this is unedited:

I'm going to attempt to drag this away from oblivion, with a snap I took a few min ago on the E-20p - no lighting, just flash:
I love the effect 2nd shutter flash gives. Nice and dreamy.
-
more like nice and drunk, IMO. :)
-
Fine then, regular it is :p
(http://nodewar.penguinbomb.com/aotd/Odyssey/plant_small2.jpg)
-
I like the late night over exposures, I used to waise untold rolls of film just going out at night and setting up the cammera and holding the shutter open for a few minutes to get the erry black skied shots of my naberhood, everything blueish green but it looked almost like day time
-
i like the regular a lot more, though the light is a bit white for my tastes, really.
-
@ Odyssey: Flowers rock, I've always said that they're one of the finest tests of good photography. Australian natives are the bomb especially.
-
And @ Bob: dude, I totally agree. This particular shot gave me a shock, it was almost pitch black (apart from the streetlight) this night, but the 30-second exposure picked up the dark orange light being bounced off the clouds. Awesome.
-
oh dear god that is fantastic
-
Oh, and here's a Sydney sunrise for you folk.
-
cool :)
If you have skies like that w/o human stuff in front, I'm a taker ( any moment of the day and year, any weather, but I need skies :p )
-
Dang, much more impressive than our sunrish to be sure... (it's cloudy here... still). Very nice
-

Cheers. :) Once I get on the Harbour Bridge, I'll have kilometres of open water to take my photos from, and I'll make a note to try and get the sky completely uncluttered for you. ;)
Heh, cheers Kal. Sometimes the colours are beautiful only when there are clouds, but a clear sky is indeed a beautiful thing. I love how the sun is just kind of peeking out in that shot there.
-
domo :)

heheh, i shouldn't really ask for a photo of the "spirit of tasmania three" since i see all three of the bloody things on any given day.. :p ;)

-
Great pictures Setekh, by the way :) That Aussie sunrise is equivalent to an English mid-day sun height ^_^
kasperl: Yup, the light is way too white. It's the regular flash setting, is why :) I took that shot as comparison mostly.
I took this one with a Sony DSC-P1. It's not great, but it's more portable than the E-20p:
I love the way drinks glasses focus light.
-
Well i have nothing that impressive, just a digicam and a weeks impulse to take pictures ... soo err ...
Here (http://www.livejournal.com/users/benjafar/) is the link to my old Livejournal, most of its on there ... somewhere.
-
Odyssey, I like that. :) Interesting plays of light with ordinary objects are half my photos.

I'm keeping an eye out for it, mate. The next time I'm at Circular Quay, at least one of them ought to be in dock. :D

5:30am bro, to arrive at uni for my 8am start. When daylight saving finishes and as winter sets in, the sunrise will be even later than it is now, so I'll arrive in the city while it's still well and truly dark.
Oh, and while at the park adjacent to uni, I took some shots of the birdies with my mate Jeremy. Here's one of my favourites... posing like a bald eagle.

Thanks, Elvir. Animals are great to take shots of... :)
Oh, and here's my friend Jeremy, going to great ends to take a cool macro shot of a flower.
-
Holding a piece of plant, great ends? :D
Get us a macro pic of a glass of tang, Tangboy :p
-
Are you asking for a challeeeeenge?! :D
Yeah, okay, I'll try, that's gonna be a challenge to make that one interesting...

I take your word on it, tho, don't disapoint me ;)
-
Semitransparent glass, flashlight bulb at the bottom, maybe play with smoke a little. You really gonna tell me it's all that hard a subject? :p
I know it's a bit of a regular refrain now, but try taking pictures of Iowa. There's a challenge. Bwaha.
-
take a macro shot from a small drop of tang on a glass surface :D
-
Or syrup on a glass surface with a strong light source... it might do cool things with light and shinyness.
I like shinyness.

Okay, was experimenting with the longer exposure times (unfortunately, the max I've got is 30 seconds, so nothing to do with stars and the like) around the house. Here's a shot of me making a cup of Milo, but I forgot the camera was still going and left - so I look like a ghost. Check it out. :)
-
What's that I hear? No manual hold-shutter-release-down exposure control? Erk :S I suppose nothing's perfect...
-
Well, I can't really compete with you guys, but I did just take this of the side of my house.

Oh yeah, my dad just got in to NY today, and said there was 4 inches of snow on the ground. :)

AH! Steak has died and he's a ghost now. Tormented to haunt the HLP forever!!
(or would that be a blessing instead...)

so would we have a saint steak's day?;) :p
-
of course
-
St. Steak's Day?! :nervous: Heh, that reminds me, we had fun celebrating St. Patrick's Day. Half of the university was wearing green. :) Top of de morning to ya!
Okay, this sky's for you, Venom. Sorry, I'm still working on getting the human stuff out of the way. ;)
-
Thanks :)
actually, no trees either would be great :D
But I can get some use with that one, in fact :)
-
Really? Cool :) Well yeah, I'm definitely scheduling a photo expedition with my friend off to the harbour, which is nice and high and over the water, so there'll be great uninterrupted views. Maybe even get up to Centrepoint Tower or something, that would be neat.
Does anyone like bees?
