				Why?? (http://swooh.com/peon/)
 whats the deal??
 Does anybody now??
or am I the only one experiencing this
-
It's been bothering me for a day or two. I'm sure stealth has his reasons...

-
last he said it was slow because users had to wait for a spot to download... now its gone:confused:

-
PEON and PREMIUM are (temporarily) moved, because we were getting 300 kB/sec upstream constantly (that's BYTES, not BITS), which isn't cool.  and it wasn't even to one particular file or a group of files, it was just random stuff, so i guess people's websites are just too popular.  they'll be back up i guess as soon as we decide what to do to fix the problem.  even now, apache's still getting 200+  kB/second.  it wasn't me that shut it down though, it was one of the other admins, but don't worry, he has his reasons

regardless, you still have full FTP access.

Swooh's host has disabled ICMP traffic, and multiple other crap that pisses us all off, because if anyone's tried downloading multiple (large) files via FTP, you'll notice it often freezes before transfers, for anywhere between a few seconds and a few minutes... then once you get a connection, it goes good.  word on the street is we may be changing service providors in the future
-
				ahhh...well ok...hope its fixed soon:sigh:

-
yeah we're going to have to do something about it.  every now and then we'll notice thousands of hits to a particular file in a day, and we'll see that some brightspark has uploaded the newest Halo demo or something, and then linked to Swooh as a "mirror" on Counterstrike.net, and as a result our bandwidth gets pwned :(

The best incident was when this happened a few months ago, actually, near the beginning of last year.  someone linked to a counterstrike file that had just come out, and everyone was downloading it.  well at many big Counterstrike sites, it was listed as the ONLY location within the USA to download the file... so of course every counterstrike fan in the US was downloading the particular file, from Swooh (becuase no one in the US wants to download it from Australia, or Germany, or something, and we were the only "mirror" with the US flag next to it :D).  haha.  i think that incident actually took the ISP down for a few hours.

See, this is why you should just rent a server from some company and whore it out using their pipelines and their resources and at their inconvenience.

-
that is definately a big advantage to just renting a server, yes
although we don't have a bandwidth limit, which is nice :D
-
Well what's Swoohs bandwidth usage like?

-
i'm not sure exactly, like on a daily or monthly basis, but i'll find out.  although i'm sure it's a whole lot.  look right now for instance, just the webserver is currently getting *checks* 157.9 KBPS, and that's with all PEON and PREMIUM shut down :o

and remember that 157.9 doesn't include FTP hits :o
-
				FTP is currently 80 KBPS

-
				.........What. The. ****.

That's like 3 times my net connection. So it works out about 600mb/hour.

 600 * 24 * 30 ~ 432Gb/month. And about 1Tb if you stick all the other stuff back on.

And how much does it cost to run per month?

Tb level bandwidth on a rental would cost a ****-load, but it still might be less than what you're paying to keep it running now.
-
well it's not 300+ KBPS constantly you know.  when someone logs on with access to download a 1.4 GB movie, then obviously it's going to jump up.  here's as of now:

Current Time: Monday, 15-Mar-2004 11:28:12 CST
Restart Time: Saturday, 13-Mar-2004 12:43:40 CST
 Parent Server Generation: 2
Server uptime: 1 day 22 hours 44 minutes 32 seconds
Total accesses: 79720 - Total Traffic: 25.4 GB
 CPU Usage: u1.01 s3.2 cu0 cs0 - .0025% CPU load
 .474 requests/sec - 158.0 kB/second - 333.5 kB/request
16 requests currently being processed, 6 idle servers

 it fluctuates.  a lot.

 EDIT:
yeah, your estimate was pretty good.  currently it's 25.4 GB in 2 days (that's since PEON and PREMIUM were taken down.)  let's say that when PEON and PREMIUM are online it's 35GB in 2 days (at least)... that's about 525 GB a month... plus FTP as you said.
-
You might be better off getting a rental and having them put some upgrades into it:

 http://www.hostdime.com/dedicated-servers.shtml
-
yeah we've thought about that, but the real reason we created swooh in the first place, (well, i didn't create it, the others did) was for personal use.  to have a personal file/web/game server.  and that's what it was, till people we knew were like "Hey man, could i have some space for my files?" and then HLP's members needed space, and i felt sorry for them, because it's not right that you can't have space online, so i proposed the idea (and the other three admins thought it was good) to give out accounts, to the public (although most of our PEONs are still HLP members, because i advertised PEON accounts to HLP, and they haven't been advertised anywhere else, because the main reason was to help the HLP community).

i don't think actually buying a dedicated server would have a point though, becuase after you pay for the server, you've still got to pay for bandwidth, and since we already HAVE a server, all we need is bandwidth.  it's all been fine and dandy until the ISP started having problems (they're going out of business i think... shhh) and started disabling protocols such as ICMP (ping) and such.  i have a feeling soon we're going to, as you say, have to do something drastic
-
thanks for showing me that site.  it's very interesting. thanks

-
				*thinking*

-
So do you pay for your bandwidth or just your connection?

-
we pay for the connection, but they don't really specify a limit to our bandwidth... i guess they assume we won't push it, ;7 although we have.  many times.

-
nice song quote in your profile by the way, i just noticed that (the 2pac/biggie song)

-
In that case, you should just pack the server with porn, enable anti-hotlinking for the movie files, and set-up a site where people can get it completely free but that it packed with pay-per-impression banner ads.

Without having to worry about bandwidth costs you'd be making a tiny amount of money every time someone downloaded the porn.

And since it's free porn, you'd get thousands of people downloading every day. You could rake in a fair few grand before your ISP decided to cut you off or demanded you stop raping the pipeline.
-
anon, your a genius ...uhhh, in a very scary way, but it seems to work:nervous: ...I think

-
Well, he could do it with anything, but porn is more widely popular than shareware games and whatnot.

-
Less impact on the bandwidth, too. I mean, really, you could compress that **** down to nothing and people'd still come because hey, it's free porn.

-
yeah, they can't really cut us off, it's against the agreement.  they can (and have) ask us to keep our bandwidth usage down ;)  but hey, we're doing our best.  i mean, we don't really want to piss off the providor, even though they do suck, because they've already done enough to f00k us over, such as disabling protocols (can you say ICMP?)... wouldn't want them to disable something (purposefuly) that would 0wn us...

... boom there goes our FTP :D

yeah who wants shareware games.  but hey, we could upload FULL games and movies ;)

That'd complement the porn downloading quite nicely
-
Warez is tricky, though. They are shutting people down these days for clearing large amounts, and I think you'll find contract or no when it comes down to kicking you or getting sued by the MPAA they won't spend a lot of time deliberating.

Movies, though, would be cool. For those very few people like me who can't get onto filesharing networks. Problem is, a movie's a very large single package- if you're gonna make money off of ads you want as many and as small separate items as possible.
-
Just put tons of small porn files on there. Single scenes and such.

That way, people can't rape your bandwidth as efficiently and they have to click to more pages every time they want another file.

It's all about giving them the least, asking the most, but never asking enough to drive them away.
-
Be sure to make the page design as inefficient as possible, too. No thumbnails, an extra "disclaimer" page or somesuch before the image page, etc. Ideally you can get 'em to look at two pages worth of ads for every actual picture they download.

-
Ideally, from the main page, they should be able to get to what they want by going through no more than 3 pages.

 And pop-ups are like client-repellant.

well right now they're RAR compressed into multiple 14.6 MB files...

 i guess i could compress them into a few hundred thousand 2 KB files :D :D :D :D :D
-
Go on KaZaA and just download every 10mb file you can find, stick 'em on the server and knock up a PHP file that pulls random file-names and links 20 at a time.

If you're giving them free porn, they won't so much mind there's no search functions or catergories.
-
				hah yeah. that'd work.

-
If you saw someone in the street giving out free pairs of trainers, would you give a **** that they were hard to put on?

-
				no

-
On that note, can you guys leave the whole concept of porn and warez alone? You can spend all day emailing eachother these ideas if you like... but not here ;)

-
				yeah we're just kidding

 ... or are we :drevil:
-
But we're not talking about warez and porn, we're talking about banner ads! :D

-
				Suit yourselves.

[color=66ff00]I'm just amazed that you guys are so knowledgeable in this area, thinking of setting up business?
