Title: He returns with gifts!: Planetary Defense Cannon
Post by: Krackers87 on March 20, 2004, 02:23:38 am
Im baaaack!! :)

Planetary defense 4 barreled beam cannon. (WIP)

Note: I didnt lvlshot it because it resizes the pic and makes it look retarded.

Was supposed to be a missle launcher at first but it sort of develpoed into this.

It looks a bit homeworld2 ish, the barrels are simmilar to the ion platform and pulse corvette in design.

seems more like a fighters primary cannons, really. but it's pretty good for something like that. perhaps some high RoF defence cannon?

Itll look more like a def cannon once i get more of the base done.

I was thinking of having its control tower either remote or attached.

Looks good, but with a bridge, it looks like it could be a torp frigate :)

Put some heatsink fins on it and you got the G.O.D. Mk2. :D

Actually, I was thinking something more "showy", maybe like the fins on B5 for cooling the fusion reactors.  Not as big of course, but something like that.

*woohoo* 1400 posts!

updated

need more ideas on what to add to it tho.. might try looking at some other models to get a few ideas.

Also i still have no idea where or howto implement heatsink fins to the turret...

That's great. :) You know, I think the mesh could be finished right there; it just needs a good texture job and that is plenty of detail and definition already.

alrighty, ill begin texturing soon

but im gonna make 2 versions, 1 ultra high detail for non FS2 usee, and another less detailed for FS2 use.

Please forgive the lateness of my reply, and the crudity of the artwork.

This is kinda what I had in mind when I said heat disapation fins.
Kinda showy, gigantic surfact area.  Again forgive the crudity of the art, I know it sucks like a dollar hooker in Reno.

For once, I agree with Lib. A vertical fin would add some interest to this thing.

I can't tell what he's got there at the bottom, but it looks like a nice base design, and this thing could certainly use that. ;)

That vertical fin idea seems pretty awesome. Im not sure about that addition to the base.. the base is justa concrete block, more or less, that sits in the ground.

The power gen and control tower will be seperate structures.

A small suggestion - get rid of the cable. They make it look smaller, IMHO, because it doesn't seem like a planetary defense structure would have cables like that. But they do add character.

OMG That art burns my eyes!!! *shot*

Just kidding.

I think those designs will really add life to the cannon.

What applications would this have in FS2? Can't exactly mount them on planets.

put them in orbit around planets.  i had a real simple model a while back since i can't model.  it was about 2km long and had a giant beam that dwarfed anything on the sath

Actually, if he wants to make it attached to a surface, why not mount a couple of them on a large asteroid and put several in orbit with engines to move it.  It they can move something Collosus sized 25 units per second, they can probably move an Arcadia sized asteroid fast enough to make it feasible.

Model is now complete ((the little beacons on the base are polly hoggers and wont be included in the final))

also decided against the fins, at least for now.

*thinks the cable is silly but likes the design otherwise*

6000 polys total (minus the beacons of course)
