Title: Punk?
Post by: Unknown Target on March 20, 2004, 09:27:18 pm
Has anyone noticed the trend in fashion lately, where all the little kiddies are wearing the black clothing chains, listening to the punk bands, etc?
Seriously, I mean, you get people doing this that have NOTHING to do with punk. My little bro is doing it and he's super happy and hyper.
No offense to these ppl, but I think they do it simply because they have no free will, and go with whatever's popular. The sad thing is, they don't seem to realize that there's more to punk than the clothing and the music.
Now, I'm not punk, and I don't claim to be. But it's pathetic that these kids (even some older ones) are simply swept along with what's popular, without realizing what's underneat the surface.

Anyone else getting annoyed at these "False Punks"?

You're lucky, we have real posers around here (ironic, huh?). They "listen" to rap and everything...

I dress in normal clothing, but still listen to metal and stuff. Being different in my opinion is being different, but not caring if anybody around you notices.

Poser Punks are called "Mall Goths" around here...since they all hang out at the mall..

You can't go wrong with Bad Religion. I saw "21st Century Digital Boy" on a well known, chesty british woman's t-shirt and I went and looked it up and I've ever since been in love with her AND Bad Religion. :) Shame she got married, but I got Bad Religion out of it, even if my heart is broken. ;)

I wonder if what I'm listening to now counts as 'punk' to most other people? *heh*

pop punk is on a die down. I absolutly hate pop punk such as blink 182, freakin sellouts. I dress in all black. I weak a pair of dickeys, a black hoody that says fight racism with a skull. However I am not a little fake punk. I am not a real punk. I do rebel against the world though. I rebel against stupidity of alchohol and drugs, no offense attended to darkage or any stoners out there. Do not call me Xstraight edgeX either, cause I am not.
I will also say that poppunk is on the die down. Unfortunatly more and more peoplw are interested in hXc and heavy metal which means that the great stuff I listen to now is going to get butchered. Example would be the AFI.

Nah, Kaz. Some goths are cool. They're just like everyone else: some suck, some are lame, and some just rock. One of my buddies in Oz is the sexiest, smartest, most talented goth chick on the planet. Of course, I'm kinda biased: she thinks I'm hot (the feeling is mutual). ;)

I hate people who follow other people's fashions.  It's all about brutal and evil gothics and yet know one does anything about it. That's culture around my area

But music is something else, it touches your soul
Rock is best when your mad
Rap is best for in the sack:D
country is... well I'm not to say, I hate it really
Alternative is my favorite gives hope when all has run out

I wear black regularly.
Abercrombie is hardly punk. Try closer to pop or prep and you're there.
A poser is someone who pretends they're something they're not. Thus, they are "posing".
R&B is good for in the sack.
Nirvana is over a decade old and is undeniably classic, whether it be now, five years ago, or 20 years from now.

Next Columbine gunman? :p

Seriously though Punk only came along cause the music of the 70's was getting too long and to self indulgent.

The same sort of thing is happening again. Almost all the music in the charts is made by bands designed to appeal to 10-14 year old girls so people are starting to listen more to indie bands in the same way that grunge took off in the 90s.

anyway i too hope pop punk dies a horrible death. The culmination of its poser aspects being when a brittish band called 'busted' (thanks god you americans havent heard much of them, count yourself lucky) covered teenage kicks. They too consider themselves punk, but are even more pop like than say avril lavigne.

it is a bit of a fashion trend, I was appalled to see a childrens tv presenter one morning 'punked' up in a sorta 'Look at me im with it' way. i dont dress punk and ive only been to a few gigs, but i love punk and totally appreciate its message and meaning.

Don't get me started on that travesty!

I tend to agree with Bill Hicks on this one.  (slight paraphrasing)

I havn't listened to the radio in nearly two years, I stoped when one day I realised all the music being played (in the five minutes between half hour comercal breaks) sounded the same and it sounded like it was being sung be kids, it sounded like 14 year olds all of it.

Classic.

As for the whole issue of posers, leave them be, hopefully a few of them will go on to discover real music, I see all these ****ty pop punk bands as stepping stones on the path to musical enlightenment, I'm sure even the most die-hard Good Charlotte fans are eventually going to wake up and realise they are **** and want to explore more avenues.

Meh, I can stand the commercial "punk" for a short while... the music isn't nearly as bad as pop. But it's not my music of choice - and I really can't understand the hordes of teens who mindlessly follow a group of bands that are so shallow. Evidently with bands such as Linkin Park a few catchy lyrics are enough to snare people - and granted some of the lyrics do hit home on my angsty side - but if you spend to much time listening to it then it really does affect you in a bad way. Certainly not a good role model for teens.

Post by: Rictor on March 21, 2004, 09:02:21 am
Yeah, but Sum 41 and Avril Lavigne are not punk by any definition of the word. You shouldn't judge the whole genre based on it's bastard offspring. For me, punk is the only (if not the only then certainly the best) type of music that carries with it a message. That, and its sounds awesome.

That is not to say that there aren't new punk bands that aren't good, its just that the majority of what the media covers as punk is boy-bands with black t-shirts and messy hair.

Radio? 'Course you get a bad impression when you listen to...radio. Personally, I listen to radio for maybe 20 minutes every 6 months. If you want to find good music, you have to get past all the crap that they play on the radio. Thats what Kazaa is for. There is a whole world of music that is not covered (well, much) by TV and radio, and most of it is much better than the same old boy band crap they've got you listening to.

I don't even have a working radio right now, my alarm clock is soo awfull i wake up to radio noise (nice and loud though :) ). Kazaa is indeed usefull for sampling large amounts of bands. According to the Wikipedia, the stuff that i listen to is mainly Grunge/Punk/Alternative Rock. Not that any of those means anything to me.

Epitaph (http://www.epitaph.com)

If you like punk but have trouble finding good bands, or if you just want to see what punk is about, this website is for you. Epitaph is the single largest and most renowned punk label, and they have great variety among the bands. You can check out the different artists on the website and most have an mp3 or two available to download. Essentially, *the* studio to follow if you want to hear good punk.

Though I don't pretend to be a connesuier (sp?), I knows what I likes, so heres some bands I suggest you check out.

NOFX, Pennywise, Bouncing Souls, Anti-Flag (www.anti-flag.com), The Living End, Bad Religion, Against All Authority, Dropkick Murphys (Irish), Rancid and the Mad Caddies (ska).

Nightwish redefines 'rock opera'. Its like metal opera. It does help that the girl that fronts them is actually classicly trained in... opera. :D

I'm surprised that people like System of a Down though. They sound terribly commercial to me.

Even though pop punk may suck to some, its a new wave of music.

So with the first era of Punk it was pioneered as new music and got new fans. Later, punk was rivatilized and changed somewhat in the 80's to become the 80's punk we all know, it was trailblzed from people who listened to the first sound of punk, these people changed punk to be punk we hear now.

Then we get to the modern times. Punk has been here for awhile now and people are beginning to modernize it to be more hip and be mainstream.

All music goes through this change, and everyone always argues over it. Classic rock turned to heavy metal which turned to goth metal which turned to crazy death metal.

Country came from twanging country boys singing through their nose, to being a pop culture icon of the 90's and year 2000.

So we need music to suck sometimes in order for it to get better. Fact is the famous people making the music you hate actually contribute to the music getting better or changing, so instead of bashing them you should thank each and every one of them for pioneering a new sound, one without them would never exist.

:wtf:
I hope you are kidding. Seriously. It's MUSIC[/u], its supposed to provoke emotions. I like some new musical styles and praise them. But if I hate it and them, I do not treat them anyhow specially. Its just music which sucks, n/m whether it "adds to genre" or not.

Because if we follow that attitude, everyone should like anything anyone ever plays. I go and play this magnificent piece of art (http://brainwashed.com/vvm/Mp3s/vvmtcd17_vvm_01_rank.mp3) and everyone should be like oh,  and we all end up as Borgs with similar musical tastes.

And I don't know if Limp Bizkit's latest abominations can credit as "pioneering a new sound".

But not every band/artist does something to expand their genre. The Neptunes, as producers, have done a lot for pop - look at Justin or Britney - and some acts can put out a song that defines their genre ie S Club 7 made a good pop tune in "dont stop moving". But some/most (depending on genre) dont.  They put out sub-standard songs just to get cash for their record company. They dont try anything new, or even do ordinary things well.

I agree the world needs some "average" bands to fill the void on radio playlists, but people making weak music with intrest only in money, not quality tunes, should be working in Mcdonalds.

With respect to the whole pop-punk thing, I'm glad my whole generation (being 18 years old) just missed out on it. Where I come from atleast, all the nu-metal kids are a couple of years younger - their all a bunch of skaters/stoners/wasters.  People my age are much more into quality indie and the new-rock revolution.  There's a lot of good bands coming out at the moment that seem to being doing much better in the UK than in America (where a lot of them are from), because there's a good sized crowd looking for something that rocks but doesnt shovel dr4m4 angst up its own ass (see metal, metallica). Check out bands like The Killers, The Von Bondies, The Rapture, Franz Ferdinand, Eastern Lane, The Zutons, Hundred Reasons, The Libertines, and The Vines.

Um, whats wrong with skating? I dress like skater punk/punk, like blink 182, but pennywise is my favourite band, along with others like nofx(seeing them in may :D ), lagwagon etc. To be honest, i haven't really see any of this supposed 'hip' punk stuff round here. Well, to each his own. You can listen to whatever kind of music you please. But what I don't like is the kids (at what age do you get to say "damn those kids today"?) think the world was invented for them. Right.

"The Clash? Pfff. They're not punk, where are their skateboards?"

And the fact that the underlying social message is completely lost on the new generation. Oooh, fart jokes and skating. As opposed to a social movement.

I'm rather bored with punk music, to be honest. Yeah, I'll listen to it, but it's all got a bit sort of same-y, to be honest. I think the problem is that these bands all sound rather similar, both in terms of production and playing style. I find that when I'm listening to an album, separate songs start to merge into each other, and that means I'm losing interest. And that isn't good, cos I need to be interested in a song to listen to it properly.

Oh, and I find the whole "solos are ****" and shouting instead of singing thing that most punk bands have rather, uhh, bleh. I feel a bit let down by a band that have a frontman who trys to shred his vocal chords rather than get a tune out of them, and whose guitarist(s) are incapable of/uninterested in anything other than chugging through a powerchord sequence. Yes, there are exceptions, but they're in a minority.

My personal tastes are pretty eclectic. I listen to a load of different stuff, and if I hear it and I like it, I'll buy the CD. I'll never download music, except if I want to see what a band sounds like. If it's good, then I buy the record. If it's not, it gets deleted.

Like I said, I listen to loads of stuff. Some of my favourites:

The Wildhearts
Iron Maiden
Thin Lizzy
Jimmy Cliff
AudioSlave/RATM
Bill Frisell
Motorhead
The Clash
Massive Attack
Bob Marley and the Wailers
Jane's Addiction
Holst
Nightwish
Guns 'n' Roses
Spirit Caravan
Django Reinhardt (sp?)
Faith No More
Judas Priest
Metallica (Puppets, Justice and Black albums, Garage and S&M. The rest falls between not bad and ick...)
Stravinsky
Primal Fear
Bad Religion
and many more...

I'm afraid I HATE grunge and most 90s "alt" music, purely because it's bloody depressing. I don't want or need to listen to Trent Reznor or Kurt f***ing Cobain bleat about how ****e things are/were in their oh-so-difficult lives. I can understand the early 90s backlash against the whole hair metal scene (Europe, Poison etc) because it had become so poppy (much like "punk" and "nu-metal" in recent years), but I have to say that I'd much rather listen to Motley Crue than Nirvana.

So there. :D

Nothing, I have a few BMX/skater friends, but its when 14 year olds do it. You get a lot of little kids with a hell of an attitude problem.

Punk? Hell, around here, there's been that stupid grunge thing going on for years now. Well, the rampant addiction to joints in the viscinity helps it, I suppose.

Music is meant to be seen live. Go see the world.

Silly child. I live in an apartment with my wife and a bunch of computers and way too much music.

What you fail to understand is that I really do hate the sort of people that go out and gather in large groups to show how much they all think alike and do the same things and love the same band and wear the same clothes. People like that (often called 'fans', short for 'fanatic') are deeply scary people who can't manage to enjoy something without seeking the approval of other people to prop up their self esteem.

No thanks.

Besides: do you know how how many criminals work concerts and the like? Bugger that. I can sit in a nice dark room with my speakers cranked and close my eyes and just absorb the music without all the annoying wankers who feel the need to bounce around like spastic crackheads and "sing" along. I want to hear the band thanks, not your lameass caterwauling. I also don't want to put up with your stench, or the stench of your alcohol, drugs or cigarettes. I don't want to deal with your basic failure to understand that I require personal space. I don't want to see you, hear you, deal with you or be near you. You are not my wife. You are not my friend. You are not my family. Why the **** would I want you near me?

Concerts are for idiots with too much money, too much time, and who like the company of that most annoying segment of society: fans.

Oh, and I don't go to sporting events. I play the sport or I don't. I don't watch it and neither should you. If your existence is so pathetic that you have to live vicariously through someone who plays a game for a living, you've got self esteem issues and need to shoot yourself. Like now.

In case you hadn't gathered: I don't like the vast unwashed mass of humanity being near me. I'm asocial. I'm damned near misanthropic. Any other questions?

Dude, i dont wear clothes because im a certain type of person, i wear clothes because I like them, not somebody else or whatever.

I wear large baggy shirts nd large baggy jeans and listen to rock and techno, but if i listned to country and pop, it shouldnt matter at all.

I think the people who complain about what people wear because it doesent fit with whatever clique theyre part of or what music they listen to, are MORE affected by whats popular and what isnt than those who wear the clothing.

So do I.

And I've never been at a concert, I prefer a calm room, I let that to my friends.
I have a friend who's on the Paris Live ( don't know the name, don't give a damn ) DVD of muse. You can see him a lot on that DVD. He's all crazy about that. He doesn't realize that him, his brother, etc, listened to that **** so much that I'm now deeply sick by just listening to muse again. Always the same ****, muse.

Muse suck in a way, but are pretty good live.

Mik I can understand you disliking the great unwashed masses, I suffer the same problems but by seeing a band live your giving more to the band that buying a CD, also, music was meant to be seen live.

I mean it's about the energy (for me at least) and not just the musicmanship and I think it's amazing when your in a hall full of people all screaming the lyrics to a song that they love and touches them, y'know?

I prefer seeing bands live in smaller settings. Bars, coffee shops, clubs. It just seems more personal, and the bands that would play places like this arent likely to attract masses of screaming people.

By your astout logic, everything must always be perfect then?

Something sucking is part of life, and you must accept that. If you cant accept sucky music, dont listen to it. Instead your trying to justify hating it, when in fact it contributes to the entire scene.

Your logic is flawed to say the least.

Totally totally agree, the intimacy is always the best draw to a smaller venue for me, I love it.

Though you can't do wrong with a damn huge festival crowd just for the atmosphere.

No, music is meant to be enjoyed however you enjoy it best. Live is pointless. IF you like it live, that's great. More power to you. I, on the other hand, prefer a CD or an MP3 in the comfort of my own home, or from wherever I happen to be with my Archos. Period. There's really no discussion here: live music has too me disadvantages for me to even consider it. Its really ****ing annoying to hear a room full of people trying to sing the lyrics of a song I love and touches me, y' know? I'm not paying to a bunch of assholes who seem to have forgotten that I'm paying to listen to the band, not them. Thanks, but no thanks.

If a band wants more of my money than it gets from a CD sale, then the band needs to sell me MP3s of its music directly. I'll pay $1 or $2 per song directly to the artist. No problem.

I don't think all bands would appreciate it however, if everyone was mute and still, even if they were appreciating the music. It's all personal preference like you say however and if that's the way you enjoy the music best then so be it. I like both but treat them as two different things really, I enjoy the atmosphere of a live gig despite the downsides of some of the morons you occasionally get but then again nothing much for me beats listening to music through my headphones in the dark.

See, as far as I'm concerned a live concert is nothing but down sides. The sound quality is abominable, there are other people there, and it costs too damned much. I'm not really concerned with what the band appreciates though. They can have my money or not. If they want it, they get it on the terms I prefer.

Well, i was eaten alive by all those questions over past 2 years or something like that... Well, I like metal, wear leather jacket/jeans jacket, have black/blue jeans, a chain touching my leg and a t-shirts of bands i listen to...... well... i also know some punks that listen to the oi punk, crust punk and old punk and so on, i don't think they are posers... but there are many posers here ... well about goths, they stick mor for themself and we don't bother them... they are mostley female goths there that always talk about satan and If you say something against satan you'll get kicked in the nuts :> Well... you know women: Go with tha flo! :> Personnaly i'm agenst many things, like goths, poser punks, poser metal heads, people from other country that are commiting crime here (damn this was racist :)), 10 year old boys and girls that listent so the britney spears and so one, becouse it's popular. Like my 9 year old sister said to me: Is metal popular, i said not really, than she said, well, everyone listens to pop, so do I becouse no one likes anything else ... bah... i could still go on and on with things i hate about subcultures + music subcultures... Even metalhead subculture isn't nearly perfect, i like others more, but **** it, i like the MUSIC! Something like Graveworm, Kataklysm, Nokturnal Mortum, Destruction and so on and on :)

Because I don't like something that sucks uncut horse cocks, like K-System or stupid nu-metal? I said I don't like to music that I don't like, because I don't like it yadda yadda yadda. Yes, it's circular logic, but I still insist it's music - a form of art, not maths or physics where logics and formulas are superior. Muse, for example, is quite good music, if you describe good music as being good in playing, songwriting, producing, singing etc.
I know they're good. Many of my friends who listen to similar music as I do, but I do not still like it. It does not ewoke emotions in me.

First obligatory WHOA APPARENTLY I DO NOT NEED TO LISTEN TO GOOD MUSIC, EVEN IF I AM FORCE-FEEDED WITH IT 24/7, GEE THANK YOU!!!!!! BUT IF YOU HATE PAEDOPHILES, DON'T LOOK AT KIDDIE PORN! What, you hate kiddie porn - why do you watch it then?

After that: Allright, my original post was apparently badly worded.  I admit I said "styles", which apparently was a huge mistake. That was mainly because words "music that should die" instantly gives me clear reflections of Limp Bizkit and Linkin Park.

I justify hating music on very simple basis I already used. Allow me to elaborate it just a little:

"It's [the music I don't like] bad music, because I don't like it and don't find it wortwhile [if forced to listen to it/have no other option/tortured by space cows, because I actually am not a masochist] listening to , it makes my ears hurt and I wish the maker of such songs [whoever it is] would die [end making such bad music]."

And sucking may be part of life, but do I still have to like it? :wtf:

Now, if you wish to present me with some hugely logical and appealing explanation why I should actually ENJOY - which I find different term than 'understand' - music my body cringes to, I am more than happy to read it.

edit: for more incoherence, because I really cannot understand what we are discussing about.
