Title: File/Printer Sharing network set up help!
Post by: Stealth on March 21, 2004, 10:34:12 pm
OK, now i've had both main computers in the house sharing an internet connection (Linksys router BEFSX41), but i'm at the point now where i want to share files (and printers) between the two.

i have, since taking the screenshot, deleted the microsoft family log in, and the dial up adaptor, since it's been a while since i've used dial up on that particular computer.  now sometime (probably a long time ago), someone deleted network neighborhood (the whole thing or just the icon?  i don't know)... i thought simply re-adding the protocols would bring it back, but it didn't, and now i dont know what to do.  my computer is XP Professional, the comuter i'm having problems with is 98SE.  i'm not too familiar with setting up small home networks, and i'm stuck on this one.  could someone with knowledge/experience help me out? :)

Thanks
~Stealth~

heh, those 2 dont mix at all. You will need to run the network setup wizard on the XP disk on *both* puters. are u sure u have the right cables?

XP and 98 used to mix fine here and I didn't have to run the network setup thing either. The trick with mixing NT (which encompasses 2k and XP) and 9x is to have the 9x box log in using credentials the NT box recognises. So if you have the account "jsmith" with the password "password" on the XP box make sure the 9x box is set to login as "jsmith" with the password "password."

Just do things the easy way.

Install GuildFTP on both machines and just FTP the files you want.

Stealth, deep breath please, thank you.

Use the Network icon in the CP and everything should be fine.  Failing that, go into the Device Manager and remove the NIC from the list, Network Neighborhood should return when the card gets redetected.

BTW, are you connecting the printer to one of the computers via parrallel/USB or to the router via ethernet?

BTW, an0n, I know you get told this all the time, but based on your recent behavior I thought I'd remind you:

You are a dick!  It will not get better!

Easy, the problem is the way WinXP pro is set up.

1) Fire up control panel and goto

Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policies (remember to be logged in with admin rights).

2) Then goto

Local Policies -> User Rights Assignment

3) Find the entry called "Deny access to this computer from the network"

4) Delete "guest" from the list

The above is an example of what not to do people. NT is set up the way it is for a reason, it 9x that's brain damaged in this area. Keep the security policy the way it is and simply create an account for the 9x box in the XP box.

ah but you see i tried that.  the NIC that's in there at the moment is only a day old, i installed it yesterday, and still no Network Neighborhood :(

When you say network neighbourhood isn't appearing do you mean that you don't see any of the other computers or do you mean that the entire network neighbourhood option is missing from your desktop and from explorer?

I'm not certain about win98 but on ME and XP you can get to network neighbourhood from my computer.

Ok, does the NIC show up in the device manager?

The simplest way to solve this may be a reinstall.  6 months is about the limit on 98.

XP and 98 will work fine together if they're setup right. This looks pretty thorough:
http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxpwin9x.htm

Only thing about the way it describes is you'll need to logon to the 98 machine - if you want to automate that and get it out of the way, use TweakUI to auto-login. (download: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/tweakui)

I'm not sure why Net Neighbourhood is missing on 98 though. Try this: in Network Properties, bring up the properties for 'File and printer sharing...' and make sure both boxes are checked. Then actually share out a directory. (windows explorer, right-click on a directory, select 'Sharing', select 'Share this folder' then ok) I've seen one problem get solved that way.

Don't forget that machines can sometimes take a long time to show up in net neighbourhood. You can check if things are working by opening Start\Run and typing:
net view \\machine_name

the Network Neighborhood icondoesn't appear in the desktop, and i can't figure out a way to get to it

Also, as someone mentioned, when both boxes are checked under "File and printer sharing" (as they are now), by right clicking, there is no "Sharing" option, as i know there should be

Not really since it simply allows you to have guests connect to your computer.  If you don't want that, you can still disable guests from connecting to you computer using less obscure ways.

If you're going to be using simple peer-to-peer home networking, that is the way you would do it.

And 9x isn't so much brain damaged here but that it's trying to log on as a guest.  It's perfectly possible to tell it log on properly, but assuming he's behind a NAT, it's not really necessary.

Moreover, win2k wasn't set up this way.  This is specific to winxp.

Now as for your win98 box.  Switch "Primary Network Logon" to "Client for Microsoft Networks"

Then make sure it's set to "share level access" in the Access Control tab.

This will enable a simple networking method that should be more than enough for a neat little peer level network for the few computers you probably have at home.

A friend's pointed out there's a registry entry that'll hide Net neighbourhood:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows \CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoNetHood
Remove the entry if it's there, otherwise I think I'm out of ideas.

This all a side effect of MS removing Guest from the Everyone group because people were exposing shares to anonymous access via Guest without realising (and disabling the use of users with blank passwords over a network). IIRC Win2k3 is setup this way as well, and it makes some sense to simplify administration of share in a business environment where security is a big concern. For a home network behind a router performing NAT where security isn't as important, changing the security policy to allow Guest remote access isn't too much of a risk.
