Title: Stupid processor people!
Post by: J3Vr6 on March 22, 2004, 01:57:19 pm
When my computer (old threads if you wanna look) was going crazy, u guys helped me out on getting it working.  The problem turned out to be the processor, it was bbq'd.

Anyway, I know my motherboard (the MSI-6561) can only go up to Thoroughbred processors and only up to 2600xp.   Using //www.pricewatch.com they indicated I could find a thoroughbred processor (via having the serial number of the processor as the reference in the site) at //www.starmicro.net  for a good price and free shipping.

I order the thing at the BEGINNING OF MARCH.  I was supposed to get it a week later.  I call them and they tell me that it was on back-order and that it would go out last Monday and that they've upgraded my shipping so I could get it on Wednesday.  I'm a little bitter, but whatever, I could understand back orders.  Wednesday comes around, then Thursday.  I call them up and ask "WTF?"  They apologize and tell me that it was shipped out on Wednesday and I should have it Monday, VIA USPS PRIORITY (I don't know about u guys, but from UPS to post office is a downgrade to me).

Well, I finally get the processor and guess what?  THEY SHIP ME THE WRONG FRIGGIN PROCESSOR!!!  What i have in the box is a friggin Barton processor.  My mobo won't take a Barton processor!!!  I call these people, with all my paperwork in front of me showing I ordered a thoroughbred.  Guess what?  THEY DON'T HAVE THOROUGHBRED IN STOCK!!

So now I gotta return the processor, they'll refund my money, but I'm still without a computer at home :(  AND IT'S BEEN ALMOST A FRIGGIN MONTH!!!  Had I known this from the beginning, OR IF THEY ACTUALLY DID CRAP RIGHT I wouldn't be in this mess.

I'm not only going to pee this time, but poop!  And then I"m gonna spell out Starmicro with my poop!

You'd have to look back at my other threads, but basically I didn't want to spend money on my computer at home since I hardly use it.  So this MSI mobo was $38 beans.

*heh*

Try newegg.com. Excellent customer support AND they have a clue.

And uh... perhaps its time to invest in some diapers.

  Ok, you made me laugh but I'm still mad, gosh darnit.  I was in the middle of playing I-War2 when this stupid computer decided to get the coronary.  I very much wanted to know what happened in the story, as apparently I didn't get to the good part (the little kid had just been thrown in jail).

U guys think that the barton chip will work on my motherboard even though my mobo only goes up to 266FSB?

Yes it will still work (assuming you have the correct voltage setting available on your mobo, which it may not being a cheap one =/ ), but it's not going to be very fast...

U sure?  This page shows that it doesn't support it...

http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=13

I don't wanna burn out the processor if I have to return it....

Note that I used the qualifier "if your mobo has the correct voltage setting for it".

In any case, it's not something you'd want to do anyways since you'll have an expenive fast cpu performing like an expensive slow cpu.

just go to a store, then you can be sure you're getting what you want.

TBred's are impossible to find.  Thats the biggest problem.  You may want to look at upgrading the motherboard as well to something that will max out the last of the 32bit support on Athlon XP's.

Well, I did as Redsniper said and went to a store.  Bought a 2400 thoroughbred for 60 bux.  I haven't installed it, probably today or tomorrow.
