I see you didn't play System Shock 2 yet, so I won't throw any spoilers your way... all I can say is - get the game as soon as possible. You might find it... [glow=green]amusing, insect...[/glow]

Excuse me. *cough*

Seriously, it might be a 1999 but it's well worth the buy. If you liked games like Deus Ex or the Thief serial, you'll love it... if not, try it anyway, you never know.

and I have system shock 2, but I haven't had the time to play more than just the very beginning. so I know some of what it's about anyway.

Well, yes... FS2 was, like System Shock 2, one of the most underrated games ever. Except System Shock, at least to my knowledge, never had the chance to reach a level as high as FS did with HLP. The "1999" comment was there for anyone who might filter it out because of the "ugly, un-UT2004" rendering.

As for SS2, you might want to reinstall it and grab the patch along. The beginning might be a bit slow, but once you get that firsrt keycard and enter central Deck 2... well, let's just say, don't play it at night. Even after finishing it three times it still gives me a nasty shock whenever I hear something around the corner. :sigh:

You can get the game from Underdog, with no cutscenes but everything else included, but there are virtually no load times. I myself LOVE to play LAN parties with folks or connect IP's with a friend of mine, and we us AOL Phone Chat to talk to eachother, via headsets. You just dont HAVE the time to type in a message when you say,

"OMG! ITS TEH RUMBLER! **** **** ****!" *loads Anti-Personel bullets*

Ya see what I mean?

Eh... I wouldn't advise getting it from Underdogs. For one, SS2 isn't abandonware yet, and no cutscenes (the intro and outro) means skipping a lot of the story. And both those animations just plain own. :D

So, you say LAN works well? I guess I'll have to try it, 'course we probably won't need phone chat 'cause we'll be stacked in a single room. Which player setup did you usually use? Marine + Techie + OSA or some other combo?

LAN works fine but be sure to make occasional quick saves as the game sometimes just quits more or less.
But else than that it's very nice :)
I always play the teckie with the hacking skill and some other usefull skills :D
It's extremely fun to play with 3 other friends for a couple of all nighters.
Great scary moments and great fun :D

Yeah, it did. BTW, did you guys see the "System Shock Rebirth" MOD for SS2, where they upgraded the models EXTREMELY well, and I mean freakishly scary. I actually had to go to the bathroom when I got on the game, and then nearly pissed my pants when I saw the hybrid for the first time.

Someone is also working on a mod to upgrade all the object textures in SS2 (doors, lifts, signs, gadgets, etc).

These shots won't be too impressive unless you're already familiar with SS2--

MM... pretty... and the Rebirth MOD is not completed, so, I suppose this will REALLY do until then. Now I want to play System Shock 2 all over again as the Navy Officer. Kick-ass!

As for the rest of you, go out and find it, because I guarentee it kicks your ass!

Yeah, Rebirth mode isn't done yet, but from what I can tell the project's effectively been put on ice. I did manage to download the thing, though, I'll put it on trial tonight  :D

ZylonBane - got that package as well, looks likee another Czech fan team... From what I can tell, those two mods are compatible, so I think I'll just dump both in the folder and try ;)
They should both be LAN compatible, as long as (yadda-yadda-yadda...) all machines have the same files.

edit: ...and after some reading, I found your SHTUP project as well. Unfortunately, the link to it won't work. Any ETA on that?

Well, after seeing the mod on TTLG, the author's name looked somehow familiar :nervous:

BTW, I meant the donwload link, not the thread itself, unless the Czech site already has them merged at the moment.

It's gonna be a LONG, downloading night :sigh:

The Czech site doesn't have the most recent version. The most recent version is linked to in the thread I linked to above.

As for the maker of Rebirth, the developer has been drafted by the people making Arx Fatalis 2, which is an RPG kinda like Morrowind. I got to talk with him and the staff on the forums before they went dead.

Let's see...

I've downloaded a total of 31 MB of SS2 mods... think I'll get anywhere?
(yes, SHTUP v4 is in the collection, I'l probably dump all the mods in at the same time and see what happens :D )

Great work, Zylon.

I didn't read all of the other threads, but does it say in there somewhere that all the models (including the zombie type people) are going to be redone?

AI mesh upgrades are all in the SS2 Rebirth camp. SHTUP is only object textures (with some tweaks to terrain textures here and there). Unfortunately Rebirth is on indefinite hold, as the the author got hired to work on Arx Fatalis 2!

The Dark Engine (which powers SS2 and the Thief games) only supports up to 256x256 textures, but considering that many of the original textures are only 128x128 or even 64x64, it's still a huge leap in quality. Also, many of the original textures were palettized down to a common set of palettes, as if SS2 was originally going to support a 256-color software mode.

[talking to self] i hate those damn Shotgun toting Xenomorph things and their pipe toting cousin!

They came and killed me then ate my brains everytime i entered that Damn Cargo bay.

Also who would want to bring ****ing chimps along for a space ride? [/talking to self]

And Stating this last I was Scared ****less when i saw the first Xenomorph thing. This game should be Put in the Hall of fame for scaring the most people.

edit: i'm not good at this game at all.

Alright, I managed to drop the whole kit'n'kaboodle into the game folder, and suffice to say... SS2 got a major facelift :D

Setekh, the images by themselves say nothing, you should see what it was like before... makes it look all the more sweeter ;7

J3Vr6 - like ZB said, Rebirth covered a lot so far - From crewpeople and their ghosts to all the Many hybrids, Midwives, Cyborg Assasins and, as of late, the Rumbler. I haven't seen too many of them (luckily, I just restarted the game), but as far as the Hybrids go, they got about 10x their regular poly-count to say the least.

ZB[/b] - I see some of the textures still aren't covered... might be worth taking a look at those, if I can find the time, especially those few animated screens that are still WIP. It's all zipped in CRF files, right?
Title: System Shock II
Post by: ZylonBane on March 26, 2004, 03:39:14 pm
Yep, CRFs are just ZIP files. And yeah, SHTUP has quite a long way to go before it's done. However, don't hold out any hope for the animated screens to be upgraded-- those are terrain textures, not objects. Increasing the resolution of terrain textures only causes them to become larger in-game. Sucks, but there it is.

Zylon, u da man.  I just wish I could see it in-game.  Maybe my brother in law can burn me a copy of his CD.

So rebirth project actually did some of the people/monsters?  Wow, cool...
Title: System Shock II
Post by: Flaser on March 26, 2004, 04:25:58 pm
Rebirth already covered the most problematic enemies - I mean polygone wise. The rest of them didn't suffer as much from the low polyness as the rest.

magatsu, I spotted about six or seven different gamesys-mods that alter weapons one way or another. http://www.digitalnugget.com/others/ss2/ <= This site alone has all that I know of, though I'm not sure if anyplace else has other downloads.

Oooh!
Ahem, yeah someone DID read your Shivan Manifesto Antares :D

It would just like to say for the record that I found the Psychic Monkies scarier than Doom 3.

Picture me, Navy Hacker, running away from Shotgun toting hybrid due to lack of health, runs smack into room full of Psychic Monkies.

"Aww, how cute!
You monkey dudes got some food or something to stop me bleeding? Huh?
NO! NOT CRYOKINI-"

Sadistic monkey bastards!!!

My only consolation is that I got to empty a clip of assult rifle ammo into one of them later. Damn that felt good.
Pity the freakin' cyborg ninja killed me afterwards because I ran out of ammo. And because I was too busy screaming like a girl to aim properly...
