Well, the normal ones looked a bit odd to me, and with my new nebulae they kinda needed an overhaul -- so...
I can already tell this is going to be one of the most unpopular releases (since this completely depends on personal preference - bet at least 50% don't like the way I did them :p ) ; but anyway. Here they are....

I really reccommend checking the Full preview gallery (by clicking here) (http://www.penguinbomb.com/lightspeed/FS2Web_suns.html)
Get the Release here: Download Sun ZIP v1.0 (http://www.penguinbomb.com/lightspeed/Suns_FS2_1.0c.zip)
Comments / Oppinions / Problems / the usual blah-blah, post here :p
Oh, and click the thumbnails, they look terrible squashed like that :ick:
EDITed thread title because this is not a SCP EXE release // Goober5000
rotflmao, the exe releases are for the release forum anyway, arent they? :P // lsd
people might have gotten confused ;) // Goober5000

well, they don't have much character. no streaks or rays or anything.
-
Not a single one of the images on your site worked for me.

they do, but they're really, really weak. That's the reason I like them / made them, actually.
How on earth could it be possible that a 2370+ space ship doesn't have windows that prevent every bright light from getting rayed as hell. Even modern cars are better than that.
IMO that's also the reason why the prometheus and the other lasers look like they do. The normally should be so bright that they'd need rays across half the screen. Same goes for the thrusters of course.
That, and i also like clean things :)
-
Do they need charachter? As generic suns look they seem fine - besides if they did have streaks then every system would have the same looking streaks on its sun.
Solar flares and what have you though...hmm...

Hmmmm. It appears to be a mozilla thing. They worked in IE
-

Hmm, odd thing bout Mozilla not wanting to display the images. They're JPG so file format compatibility should really be there...
-
I like them. Simple is good, for suns.
-
That's also what I think, but I already knew the reactions on it will be pretty much 50-50. :)
-
It's your fault not Mozilla's You've used the wrong slash character
/lightspeed/Screenshots\Suns\blue00.jpg :D
-
Combined with your nebula the suns look really good, IMHO. Certainly more realistic than the suns/nebula in retail FS2.
-
@karajorma: Crap, it's really damn obvious I havent slept properly for about a week.
Today I was walking around nearly half of the day wearing my T-shirt inside-out. I just can't think properly anymore.
Will be fixed, rest assured :)

thats purtay
-
I forgot to add they're 100% multiplayer friendly. :)
-
Those suns are perfect, Lightspeed. You might want to make 400% sized versions as well for actions closer in to the primary. I really cannot find any faults with them.
Those nebulae are hot too. Almost makes me want to play the game again. ;)
-
see if you can make animated background images to create solar flares and stuff.
-
Nice, me likes
-
Solar Flares wouldn't move noticeably in the time it takes to fly a mission, at least not if you want to get all retentive about them they wont ;)
They look perfectly good to me LS, stars with 'character' as Setekh pointed out, would promote cries of 'They used that sun 2 missions ago!' ;)
-
Mm... nice suns.
Check it looks OK in supernova mode though.

that's true, but your eyes do it some, too.
-
those are the new suns.
I like them, They 100% better than the originals.:D
-
Will you be making juggernaut versions for the FS2 campaign?

A couple of non-conventional stars would come handy though for some special missions - I know those people should make their own art, but Homesick has clearly shown, that some people can just FRED at their work and make something awsome.

Suns are scaled by the game (in the FRED background editor). The image itself is high-res enough for suns that cover your whole screen. Big enough? ;7

I think the sathanas are without a sun - its just the fleet with transparent background. I could do some better versions of them though (with spec mapping, glowmaps, and alpha transparency)

Thats the FS2 blend effect (screen going white) - The window is probably toned somehow which prevents the light from directly blinding you.

Well, I could probably make some :)
I also had planned for making a 'supernova capella' where you can see the green sun behaving oddly. The prob with animated suns is that i'm limited to 256 colours, so I'm exclusively going to use it for capella.
As for other suns, I might throw in some special ones, but that'll prolly be later on :)

I didn't know that. Rock on. :)
-
where can I get your nebulae? I'm looking for a release that replaces the old ones...

I've been trying to make them with only Fred and paint!! really hard though. Yes, they are just Transparent fleets in the background around the star.:)
Hey, lightspeed chek your PM's

The default nebula in fs2 plays with peoples misconceptions about them. If you were actually flying through those pretty nebula that you usually see in magazines/newspapers you would not know you were. The density of the cloud is very very low as it is spread out over a huge volume of space. If you want realistic they should be pretty much removed altogether.
-
Of course, it'd be pretty boring to fly through a nebula you can't see, hence we want to make nebula that people would "think" looks realistic.
-
These are so cool! :eek2:

You're making an awfully strong assumption there. Just because the volume of nebular material is spread across a vast volume of space, does NOT imply that there are no pea-soup thick regions.
Any signifigant gravity source could lead to a nice pea-souper in its vicinity--until of course the density in that region gets high enough to fuse. That is, after all, one of the canonical theories of stellar creation.
-
yeah, and now that you mention that, FS subspace is dependent on a strong local gravity feild, wich would explain why all the reagons explored (via subspace) in the FS2 campain were so dence.
-
That's one of the best science fudges I've ever heard. It's even quite plausible. Well done. :)
The stars are great, Lightspeed. I'm with Mik on making some ridiculously large versions, they will come in handy.

Now we just need to get Mercury in the frame somewhere and we're in business. :D

Just you wait for the release of TVWP ;7

no, no, no. i'm talking about the subtle lens flare that your eye creates.
-
that's filtered away.
If it wasn't you'd be blind after looking into the FS2 sun for about a second, anyway.
-
i downloaded lightspeed's nebula pack (all 3 of them, replaced stars.tbl with the 3rd and largest one) and all my nebula backgrounds from the FS2 campaign seem to have disappeared. Is that supposed to happen? How do I fix this?

That is supposed to happen. You can't fix it.
You will (like me) have to wait for a new SCP executable that supports larger stars.tbl files.

That's exactly the same sun like in earlier images. :)

Version 2.0 of my suns is up for download. It fixes quite a few issues with release 1, and improves the visual quality you will see in-game. Enjoy:

Yay!!...
Again :D

question: would it be possible to ad some type of glow/shine/transparancy mask so that when you're in a nebula mission, the sun gets a halo?
-
I should try and make a FS version of that one, for stars like Capella, or old stars:
Pb is, I've lost the scene, and I can't remember how I did that effect :(
-
That's pretty nice. Actually, I had an animated capella star planned for version 3 :)
Now if you could find that scene that would be really, really cool.
