Title: Battlefleet gothic and freespace
Post by: Zeon on March 27, 2004, 04:07:36 pm
I was just wondering if anyone has thought about doing a battlefleet gothic game on the freespace2 engine? I think it would be great to see it done. What is everyone's opinion?

well, BFG is more about large ship battles than fighters... I've seen a couple ship mods for FS2 tho.

True but as a fighter it would still be awsome to fly around battleships and the planetkiller. Not to mention the that yes it was more about capship to capship battles but if it were'nt for the fighters and bombers those capital ships wouldn't survive on their own. But I would definitely love to do a mod for it.

Do Battlefleet Gothic in a fleet war type of game, like Armada, or better yet, Homeworld2.

It would be cool, but the ships in BFG are huge. I swear that the Destroyers (which in BFG are the weakest warships) are the size of the FS2 Destroyers!

Still, it would be cool. it would especially fit well on the HW2 engine.

While it would look cool on the FS2 engine, i think the vessels are to big for such a game.

Depends on how big you think stuf is.

I've been, at one point, working on an Imperial Cruiser mesh for this sort of thing.

Sizes:
         Battleships: ~12km
         Grand Cruisers: ~10km
         Heavy Cruisers/Battlecruisers/Cruisers:~8km
         Light Cruisers: ~4-6km
Frigates and Destroyers: some where around 1km

(Me fan of BFG, what can I say?;) )

Would be cooooool, but the FS engine isn't good enough, and the ranges involved would make it a very boring game to play: "Oh, look - that cruiser about 60km away just melted our carrier ship with it's nova cannon. Oh well....."

HW is the way to go on this.

60km? make that 6000 and you'll be ok ;)

Why not up the speed of fighters?

Fighters in BFG are about useless against capships unlike what Zeon says in his second post. It's all about long range torpedoes and stuff like that. Fighters are mostly used for ground based attacks.  For exemple, you don't have Lightnings in BFG, you get them in W40k and epic.

Fighters may be unable to hurt the capships, but bombers can...;)

Fighters can be quite important since they:

a) shoot down hostile bombers
b) intercept hostile torpedos
c) can draw the fire of anti-fighter weapons on warships, allowing the bombers though untouched (hopefully)
d)stop hostile fighters getting at YOUR bombers and torpedos

I admit, the sizes of ships and the relative ranges of weapons on said warships can be a problem, but it's not insurmountable.

I admit, BFG may be better suited for HW/HW2, but then again, we have omni sticking his uber-high poly ST ships in...
