Title: Knoppix live... help!!!!
Post by: Joey_21 on March 29, 2004, 01:42:20 am
OK! I tried to use the Knoppix live version of Linux to try to check the OS out but when I shut the OS down, it shut down my computer and now I can't get back into my system! When I press the power button, nothing much happens. The computer powers on and I can open/close the CD drive, but nothing shows up on the monitor screen! The LED is yellow. I don't understand what's wrong and any help at all getting me back to my desktop would be very very appreciated!

Nothing is in the floppy drive. The monitor won't work even after I shut off the computer using the power button (I also tried unhooking the monitor from everything and plugging it all back in). I do believe the fans are spinning. There are no beeps, just a blank screen. There isn't a way to tell whether or not the computer is wanting something since I can't see anything on the screen. The monitor's LED indicator just stays yellow. It's never done this before until I shut down knoppix live.

Have you tried another boot disk?

Didn't need to use a boot disk. The CD for Knoppix live has bootup information on it. But seeing as how the monitor responds to nothing, I can't even tell if it even gets as far as asking for a bootup disk.

check your cables really well

hit to monitor on the side with medium force (I'm not kidding, flat handedd slap, make sure you haven't got any rings on)

press the monitor on off button a few times.

:wtf: OK this is weird. I called Dell technical support. They told me to unplug all of my devices from my computer and unplug the monitor and the power supply from the wall. Then I was instructed to hold the power button for 10 seconds, plug everything back in, and then it worked! :eek2: They didn't really give me an explanation as to why it works, but I'll have to keep these things in mind for the future.

And I also wonder why Knoppix did this in the first place... maybe it was hardware incompatibility? I don't know. This has certainly been a very interesting thing to happen tonight. I need to supposedly be waking up in 5 hours to go to class and here I am working on computer technical problems. :doubt:

The main thing is that my computer works again. I have all kinds of documents (homework, C++ assignments, etc.) due this week at the uni so I'm glad I got somewhere. Now I'm speculating as to whether or not I should ever use Knoppix again. :shaking:

Seems like some sort of latent current running through the computer was enough to keep it locked up in never-never land. Weird.
