Because it's called football. We invented it, thus we name it.

Soccer is simply a shortening of 'association football', used in certain countries because the merkins couldn't think of a proper name for their 'rugby with shoulder pads' sport.

(this is boviously a sore point, from trying to buy footie boots on holiday several years ago, and getting hit with this metal cleated pish)

I know.... I was using the double meaning

"Football - how hard can it be?"

Which is probably more obvious to a native english speaker, I guess :)
