Title: Laptop DVD drives.
Post by: Martinus on March 29, 2004, 09:07:34 am
[color=66ff00]Are laptop DVD drives generic in design? I have very little knowledge in this area and a friend is looking to buy one. Strangely information is not forthcoming on the mighty google but I'm sure that my search was not exhaustive.

It's actually quite hard to know what terms to use sometimes.

internal/external?
if external, what interface?

i currently have a DVD/CDRW drive in my laptop, dunno what brand or type, it works fine for burning MP3's and watching movies.

[color=66ff00]Internal, don't worry I'm not so slow as to overlook the possibility of an external USB or Firewire drive yet :) , my friend has an external CDburner and she would rather have an internal drive than cart another external device around with her at uni.

the internal are quite generic, afaik. as in, they have the same dimensions and the same interface. at least the same interface. I'm quite sure, but not to 100%, about the dimensions.

[color=66ff00]That's what I figured. I guess I'll just buy a generic one and try it out.

Thanks for the info and suggestions.
