Title: Why does my screen shrink?
Post by: J3Vr6 on March 29, 2004, 12:07:31 pm
hey computer people, this one goes out to you.

It doesn't matter if I leave my computer sitting pretty or if I'm in a game, sometimes the screen will flicker a split second and suddenly be a little smaller (less than an inch around, showing more black between the image and edge of the monitor).  I have to press a little button on the monitor which will automatically go back to what it was set to.

Why does it do that?

to piss you off.
To me, that's hardware pb, and there's nothing we can help with, sorry.

it's a hardware problem that is most likely in the monitor

Could be anything even the powersupply in the monitor can cause serious display problems.

Lots of times it can be resolved by replacing Condensators in hot places of the board.

Let's repeat ourselves again please.

yeah, saying it's a hardware problem could be a million things.  Anyway, you guys say it could be the monitor, but I'm not about to spend money on it.  I'll just keep hitting that little button til it dies on me.

if it's a hardware problem (i assume you mean inside the computer) then why would pressing a button on the monitor fix the problem every time? wouldn't that mean it's a monitor problem?

A little button on the screen?  Is that button labeled?  Can you tell us what it is (from reading the label or manual)?

Sounds a lot like rescaling the display for different resolutions, especially if it happens during a game.  However, I'd expect anyone here to be able to detect that and so I doubt it's the problem.  Just to say what everyone else has already said, it sounds like the monitor.  That sort of glitch, along with losing convergance and sharpness, is a sure sign that the monitor's on it's last legs.  Providing it's not being told to do that by the graphics drivers that is, and changing resolutions (as can often happen in game, especially at load or when cutscenes are involved) can for some monitors cause some shifting of the display area.

And I'm 99% sure the little button he's hitting is the degausse button.

The Monitor is fine. It's your world that is shrinking.

Not realy like i said allot ofmtimes it's because some components are leaking meaning that the values drop and that can cause bad Static focus or dynamic focus and convergance problems. Or weird screen behaviour like this problem.

Mmh, a monitor is a hardware part.

Could be that the monitor is dying.  That's bad, but to be expected if it's older and had lots of use.

It's possible, if the connections have loosened or the power cord is loose, that the monitor is flashing back to it's default settings and he's pressing the "recall" button that resets the monitor to it's most recent settings.

Tell me, does it make a click like it's going off when it flashes?

It's this monitor right here:

On the far left of the button panel, there's are two buttons with a funny symbol on it.  You press the one on the right (on the far left) and it will go back to what it was before.

And it's not changing resolutions.  It would just flicker for a split split second then shrink like a qtr of an inch.  But when I press that little button, it will fill the screen again.

Monitor is probably dying, I'd start saving for a new one.

Check the power connection in the back and make sure it's secure.
