Title: Kazaa Alternatives
Post by: diamondgeezer on March 30, 2004, 01:38:17 pm
Hokey dokey, the 'perfectly legal' file I'm chasing isn't available on Klite, so everyone throw names of alternative p2ps at me :)

Well yes, those are the usual suspects. But P2P aps are springing up all over the place now, each claiming to be better than the last :)

Strangely, Kazaa yielded the required MPerr... legal file after I threatened it with eMule and WinMX

[EDIT] I say, someone calling himself 'palkssays' is downloading pron off me. Good for him

Specially with the MS link in his sig

Anyway, next question - how would I go about capturing or otherwise ripping a WAV or whatever from a streaming Real thingy?

I've found E-Mule to be the best for d/l-ing large files. A lot of rare stuff it has, and d/l's really quickly

Real Audio has been invented by the devil, and on one of his headache days.

Bottom line: sure like hell not legally, and illegally, please, please PM when you find out.

off course, hooking a cable from your sound output to you mic port and recording with the sound recorder of windows is an option......

Hmm... let's see what i can say without getting illegal...
Take a look into the Nimo codec pack, you will find tools for both QT and RM (after installing rename the latter as .avi)...
You will still need something like VirtualDUB to encode the thing...

Oh it works, but it's a little hit and miss as to whether you can find what you need, and whether you'll be able to pick up a decent transfer rate after that.

Nothing can beat winmx if you get the right open nap servers...

And an incredibly stupid option, if you have a soundcard made in the last decade or so. Just open up the volume control panel and set your recording input to the Wave Out device (or whatever variation on the name your sound card calls it).

Winmx is a bit pants I find.  Its much easier to find what I want on Klite, and winmx downloads generally take ages to complete.

Personally I recon napster was the best.  It was simple and effective to use, didnt spend any time arsing about with multiple download sources (which generally dont do much).  I thought its manual approach to selecting and monitering your downloads was much better, that doesnt seem to be the way things are going these days. WinXP syndrome.

If you do not use the winmx standard servers it's much like the old napster.
By using the open nap server you have to do most things manually, and if you are lucky you'll find the fiber networks, where you can bring some real work even for a T1... I experienced downloads up to 300kbps using them (yes, i've got a T1 :p)...
