Title: So... Deus Ex and Deus Ex 2...
Post by: diamondgeezer on April 04, 2004, 06:18:21 pm: OK, so in the last week I've replayed DX and reminded myself quite how much it rules (in that it rules over all)

So now I have to wonder - should I get DX2 despite the fact that demo was pretty horrible? I mean... maybe I could get used to the dodgy interface and floaty jumping, if it means more uber-RPGing and global conspiracy storylineage. Advice, people! I need advice!

Incidentally - I just noticed that Alex Denton is one of the in-vitro chaps in stasis in the Area 51 labs... what a game :D

Not as good as DX1. The patches fix a lot, but there's a lot of bad design decisions made with the game.

The story isn't quite as good as DX1, as it's a little too blunt and falls into the trap of "Matrix Dialogue." (i.e. trying to use large vocabulary to explain simple things to make the characters seem smarter)

Ion put out a patch that addresses many of the problems people had with the game, and in either case the demo is unrepresentative of enture game due to the fact that the "choose your path" gameplay can't really be demostrated in a demo.

That, and the community had put out an awesome high detail texture pack and replaced quite a few character skins with *much* improved versions.

And no, I don't have the game, so all of this does not come from first hand experience. My comp can't tun it, but when I get a bettter video card I'll definatley get the game.

I should note that I am certainly a DX fanboi, but I don't know if that will help or hinder my enjoyment of DX2

More dialogue doesn't mean that it has a better plot, it just means there's more dialogue :)

The game also lacks a lot of the atmosphere DX1 had, since there's not the E-Mails, Books, etc. Little things that gave background to character and things to see when replaying. Most books in DX2 are in fact ones from DX1.

The full game is much better then the demo though, but it's still no where near as good as the first game. Hell, and some of the things they did (more biomods, no skills) are things I agree with and I still think that they made some big steps backwards.

Post by: 01010 on April 05, 2004, 02:06:29 am: I've been playing DX2 on the XBox simply because the demo ran like **** on my computer, even with all the tweaks. It's a good game, but not the same as DX, it's streamlined, which I feel makes it a bit better, but that's because I thought there was too much ****ing around with the inventory in the first one.

Hate to say it but the game has been made for the console over the PC and you can tell from playing both versions. The interface works really well on the 'box and it's absolute crap on the P.C.

Storywise it's ok, not as good as DX but still interesting, especially when you learn your past (which you'll probably realise before you get told, but hey) and I like the fact that you can choose to work for two different organisations (though I tried to go it alone as much as possible). The main problem I have is finding ammo.

Post by: ZylonBane on April 05, 2004, 04:39:34 am: If you're going to get DX:IW, wait a few months until it hits the bargain bins. Eidos and Ion Storm in no way deserve to be rewarded for utterly gutting DX of everything that made it great.

Oh, and in other news, Ion Storm just fired Randy Smith due to "internal friction". Randy was the project lead for Thief: Deadly Shadows, and was also the lead on the previous Thief games under Looking Glass. This does NOT bode well for how T:DS is shaping up.

It sums up all I could say in the topic: "Deus-Ex was an experience with a lot of shortcommings as a game, DX2 on the other hand is a "just"a game."

The fact that the PC UI was so screwed up is a shame though.

Well, seeing how I gave it to my brother in law for x-mas a few years ago, I know about the game. And I've heard from people who have played say that it's a great game. Plus hearing you guys rave about it. But since my old computer couldn't really play it, I just had to take everyones word for it.

On a side note, I went home for lunch and tried to install the game. After few complaints, it finally got installed. So I'll play it :) Give me a cookie.
