Title: What I've been doing lately
Post by: Black Wolf on April 04, 2004, 10:23:17 pm
Well, one of the things anyway. A Vasudan fighter. Unnamed, pretty much unclassed (It looks interceptor or space superiorityish, but I haven't really written anything solid). It's got a semi small texture bug, so I'm probably not using it, but I thought I'd throw it up and get some advice for next time.

BTW, I've gained a new respect for those who make these things - even with fairly simple lines, Vasudan fighters are a ***** to texture, and as you can see, this doesn't even look all that much like a normal Vasudan fighter - god knows how I'd go trying to texture a seth or horus. Kudos fellas.

I don't really like it too much.  it's too skinny and the tentacles just make it look ugly.  It's also totally symmertrical, which doesn't look good.

It looks alright too me. Some people are just too picky :P Its not like you'll ever see it in a perfectly aligned position in the actual game. It reminds me a lot of the Reshef model though. Maybe a stealth version or something. (Terrans have the Daedelus, Vasudans could use a Stealth Fighter too.)

[Edit]
If you're looking for names, I'd suggest: Kanika (means "black"), Keket ("goddess of darkness"), Tabia ("talented") or Mert ("lover of silence") - That is, assuming it were a stealth ship.

Now that I look into this stuff, I wonder if the Vasudans would be the least bit offended if they discovered that their Heavy Assault Fighter (Tauret) was named after the goddess of pregnant women...

The skin looks awesome, the shape itself a little plain but otherwise not bad.  It's a bit on the spindly side, so it looks rather interceptor-ish.

It definately reminds me of Reshef and that's not a bad thing :)

It does look a bit plain, maybe some detailing could spice it up?

Oh, and while I'm thinking about it: does it not present a problem that the pilot is essentially sitting in the engine?

Great design, but a bit bland and needing more body. Still gets my approval though.

I don't think it's too bad, but it can use more work. No need to go assymetrical ( what's with people and symetry? bah, they'll soon complain the ships are too commercial :rolleyes ), but, for exemple, you could make the spike on the botom shorter than the others, and the one on the top longer. Add some vasudan fin things, stuff, and crap, and you can have a good ship. Oh, and yeah, you could extend the engine back between the spikes, so I've never heard anybody complaining about tie fighter pilots seating in the engine :doubt:.

Ummmm. The vasudans have a steath fighter.  The Scarab appears in COW alongside the daedelus. I know it's stealthed but I'm impressed that the stealth was so good you missed it completely :p

As for the fighter itself. I like it. Definately similar to the Reshef. If you don't want it release it and let someone else play with it :D

I may play with it a bit, though it'd destroy the skin - that' s the problem with working in isolation - you have to go based on your own opinions and can't get outside advice. Thus, you tend to go all the way through on something, even if it is kinda crappy.

If I can figure out a way to get it online (I have to get it from my PC to the uni ones, where I am now, via disks, so I'm size limited, and the skin is a 16million colour, 1024² bmp...) I will probably release the skin and the .3ds, though anyone looking at it in 3d will pick up the texture bug much quicker (I'm surprised it hasn't been picked up already actually - the most blatant example is visible in the head on shot on the pimp sheet - the top, left hand blue line).

Still, I may have another bash at vasudan modelling in the not too distant, and any advice on this model/skin will help with any future projects. Useful stuff.

They also have the Ptah.

Pegasus and Ptah were Stealth Recon ships, not fighters. The only Scarab I'm aware of (as well as the only one listed in the Freespace Ships Database in FSURP) is a Vasudran support ship... But I've never seen COW, either.

Scarab was given as the name of the stealth prototype in Templar - hence the name of the CoW ship.  I only realised the shared name post-release.  Although the VF Scarab was a recon anyways (worse than the Ptah)...'twas a bit underused in CoW in all honesty, but i still am quite proud of the design

(crap piccy, natch)

It will get some more use in MG although we've un-stealthed it :D

The Scarab was a Ptah prototype. They are all recon fighters like the Loki (which itself was originally a stealth fighter until the loyalist GTA forces exploited a flaw in its stealth system).

Well, I like it, though I would make sure to place it into missions with bright backgrounds. ;) Is that in POF yet?

I don't really do pofs too well - hell, I'm not even 100% on how to stick lods together. It's a textured 3ds presently - if I can get that uploaded somehow, and someone wants to do the rest, well, they're welcome to it.
