Setekh playing guitar! (http://www.penguinbomb.com/misc/setekh_guitar.exe) :D (self-extracting RAR, hosting courtesy an0n - cheers mate)
Took this video on the precious (my Sony DSC-V1). ;) I started finger-picking a little while ago, had a few chances to practice. This particular piece is the intro to a church song which I translated from piano into guitar. Mad fun to play. ;)
If anyone wants a clip of me playing some rhythm parts, I can put one up, but they're not as fun to watch. ;)
-
do you take lessons, or do you figure it all out yourself?
-
The latter, sir. :)
-
ah.
*still downloading*
-
very nice!
it sounds very good. you should make that your theme :p
-
it sounds really nice indeed.
-
Uhhh... I hate to say it, esp. before seeing the vid myself, but you may want to host that file somewhere else... GS frowns on non-relevant content on their servers.
-
bah whos gonna tell? :p
lol very nice setekh :),
btw where'd you go after walking off ? :p
-Grug
-
didn't Thunder loose is FTP acces because of his City of Light thingy?
-
Yes, I did :p
Edit: Actually that's not entirely true - I lost it because I hosted a Desert Combat beta release that was due to be released on File Planet two days later. I was doing that so that I could transfer it from the friend who gave it to me - to my own computer - thus avoiding the arduous ques of File Planet.
They caught me doing it, and kicked me. They were right I suppose, though I'd have thought they might be nice enough to just ask me to delete it - which I would have done of course.
Still, what's done is done. Curiously I've not really missed my lack of FTP access since - so it can't have been that important.
-
lol
sorry for your loss...
:p
-
Me too, I'm crying on the inside. (Actually it is a nuisance, the unlimited space was handy for uploading "any old thing" when it needed to be shared rapidly). But what the heck. Back to the topic

Y'see, I tried that, but me fingers are fecked up from a childhood of playing in goals, so i could never play chords using more than 3 fingers :(
which is a nnoying, as I actually have 2 of the damn things in the cupboard (one's strung left-handed, the other has the high e-missing and is right handed)

an0n to the rescue?

Very nice work there Setekh, I prefer finger picking myself.

if I had a decent mic (and i had a foot switch), i could play something

there's so much scope for innuendo there, y'know.
-
LOL!
I've been playing guitar for nearly 15 years now, and I still can't solo. Just one of natures Rhythm guitarists I guess :)
I might even do a quick MP3 now if I can be bothered to boot soundforge :D
-
hmm, only playing half a year here, but getting better at the solos, be it slowly. Best at riffs and rhythm i guess.
-
i can do the first two solos from "One" by Metallica. tapping is fun
-
Tapping is especially good because 8 times out of 10 if you cock up, no-one notices ;)
-
unless the solos are written for 108bpm :p
once i hit about 150bpm it gets hard to alternate pick on the higher strings, espically if the left hand is moving around a bit. i can get pretty fast on the low E and A strings. I don't have a metronome so i can time anything. I'll estimate around 200 bpm since i can almost sync with Master of Puppets on the CD (which is 220, with all downstrokes). i've been playing for about 7 months or so, which can explain a bit.
-
Very cool Setekh. What church song is it? I'm curious if I might know it..?
-
Grug: Err... I think I went and drank some milk and Oreos... rested my tired hands :D
an0n: If you're feeling charitable today, go grab it and upload it wherever you choose, and I'll adjust the link. Ta.
Flipside: Playing for 15 years?! Wow, I could probably learn a lot from you. Record something for us to hear if you can. :)
Jiggyhound: My best advice is, keep at it - be patient with your playing (don't rush into playing a difficult piece), practice reasonably often, and you're well on your way to guitar happiness. :D
Ulala: It's called Resurrection, written by an Australian. Probably haven't heard of it. ;)

nice one Steak:)

Nice

Setekh, seeing as you don't take lessons and I don't really want to either, how would you advise is best to get started? Books? Internet? Getting some chords and trying?
See, I have two perfectly good guitars (1 hand-made electric from his college days, 1 cheap acoustic) here belonging to my dad - he's not allowed to play them because it annoys my mum. I have nothing to lose by annoying my mum, hence I'm trying to start playing the acoustic.
-
get some books that teach you guitar. usually they have primers for chords, scales, reading music and tab, and some basic songs. luckily for me, my learning guitar book had some easy metallica songs like Enter Sandman instead of twinkle-twinkle little star.
also try Cyberfret (http://www.cyberfret.com). The popups get annyoying unless you have a popup-blocker of some sort.
-
Woah that's pretty good:)
Tell me where did you get that poster?
My teachers have that same one and I can't seem to find it
-
I really don't trust opening exe's... especially from an0n's server... :p
-
Thanks for the link PhReAk - do you have a title and author for the book you had?

If it was one of kasperl's files: Maybe.
But I gots not beef(s) with Steak, so it's about as safe as Kristin Kreuk's virginity in an all-homosexual monestary.
-
I had lessons for a bit, now i just teach myself, with my electric. Simple enough, get tabs, practice them.

its kinda useless if you don't enjoy metallica. but mostly it has short riffs at first and it gets progressively more technical and faster once you learn basic chords. some of the tracks in there are also simplified and slowed down since beginners won't be able to play at fast tempos.
-
Indeed, most of the advice above is pretty sound, just find a reasonably easy piece that you like and keep playing until you know it, then find another. Ironically at the moment I build guitars better than I play them.
I'm helping a friend at school with his A-level technology project, I'll post photos as soon as I finish it, his woodworking skills are pretty basic and he didn't think it was so complicated but then that's pretty much what I did. :)
We pretty much copied the body design from an ESP explorer, it's not going too badly but I've run into a moderate glitch I'm hoping I can fix tomorrow.
Building guitars is addictive.

You'll know your getting the hang of it when you can get someone opposite you naming chords and you can play them straight off. It's a good way to remember your chord shapes, at least, it taught me the major and minor chords in under a week :)
THEN I discovered Bar Chords ;) LOL
-
mmmmm.. ESP Explorer. put some diamond plate on it.

edit: personally i like the design on the BC Rich Warlock the best, but from what i've heard they are uncomfortable to play

Gah. Chords. Evil, evil F Major. Never was able to play that right.
-
Yeah barre chords are a bit of a pain initally. :)
Very useful though as it opens up a whole new range of alternative chords i.e. you can shift the F chord up a few frets and get A.
Well, you should get the idea.
Nice example Phreak but not my bag. I'm more of a PRS fan.

-
LOL One of the guys in the band had a flying V, but ended up getting rid of it when he discovered it's absolutely impossible to play unless you are standing up ;)
-
which is why i won't get a flying V until i regularly go on stage
Odyssey: you may want to check out guitar pro www.guitar-pro.com

I considered building one but it's pretty wasteful on wood and it's got a glued in neck which I don't think I have the necessary skills to execute properly at the moment. A bolt on neck is a lot more forgiving, if the pocket the neck sits into is a little too large you can still rely on the screws to hold the neck on properly and if the neck to body angle is not perfect you can adjust the neck slightly using shims which are very thin pieces of wood.

-
i found the schematics to a wah-wah pedal. the parts are dirt cheap too, its amazing they sell for $100
-
Yeah Phreak, you're paying for name basically. Geting a good housing for one is hard though.
Best fuzz pedal I ever had was one I built into a broken Wah housing, you could really stomp on it when you wanted the fuzz to kick in. Found the schematic in a book called electronics projects for musicians and played with the circuit until i got something I liked. Was quite a fun wee thing to build but it's hard to sufficiently shield them. You should have heard some of my inital amp tests, sounded like someone was torturing a bag of cats.
My friend liked it so much I gave it to him. Must build another when I get some time.
BTW phreak, I have a decent archive of good retro effects that I've amassed over time, if you want copies just ask.

-
i figured building a good housing would be the trickiest part. im gonna start my homemade effects business by building a footswitch using some cable, sheet metal, a switch and spraypaint (which should be hella easy)
-
Remember that any enclosure would ideally be made out of a conductive material (plastic and conductive paint isn't so great IMHO).
Also the stompbox switches are actually quite readily avalable IIRC from the likes of Maplin or RS components and both have online stores.

I have one word for you: patience. So many guitarists (young and old) rush into playing pieces immediately at full speed, or close to it. This will lead to disasters and innumerable inconsistencies in your playing technique. Practise slowly at first, getting the movements right and making sure your body is relaxed rather than tense (precise movements such as your fingers will do in guitar are impossible to perform at high speed when there is excessive tension), then build speed once you have the movements down. Movements first, speed later. Be prepared to put some real time into your instrument and you will well and truly shine when you play. :)

Thanks :) The poster, hmm... I got it from a local Christian bookstore called Koorong. I think the shop's just Australian, I'd suggest looking around the book shops and seeing if they have one or can order one in.
Maeg, you build guitars?! Photos!! :D
-
Only have one completely scratch built guitar at the moment, working on the second (had to scrap a neck today and restart because of stupidity with a power plane). :(
Anyhow, the first one I ever built:

Dude, that's really an accomplishment! Did you give it a name? :D

I'd call it a Strat with a good looking headstock, pickguard, and fretboard. its a wonderful accomplishment. now try putting a floyd on it
-
Oh, I meant, give the Strat a name. I'm still trying to think up a good name for my Samick. ;)

Chardabris? (or whatever the Terran AWACS is called ;) )
-
Charybdis? That's a serious contender
-
Actually it's called the White Star. :)
Will take photos of the one I'm currently working on as soon as I dig out my digital camera.

-
So it does have a name! ;) Way cool.
My brother and I are writing an accompaniment for that guitar part you saw me playing, so once we've got that recorded I'll show you a duet. :)
-
sorry to bump this..
but I did show clip to my friends sister she said you look cute like rabbit ;)
*runs*
-
lol
i picked up my dads gitar like 3 weeks ago; and found some of his books and went online for some pointers. I just have a problem with fretting chords right because the strings are really packed togetehr with a small action and i have reletivly big fingers... ergh

 I'm speechless...
Btw, Drew, maybe you should pick up a classical guitar and try learning on that first. Much easier for you big-fingered folk, the frets are spaced out far more. :)
-
the ones with they nylon strings? thats funny stek :P
I played one of those on sunday and i didnt like it to much. Hopefully ill get an electric sometime in august :D
-
Well, if you're worried about having packed strings and big fingers, nylon-string is the way to go. ;) Lol, the sound is much better when you put it through an amp - otherwise, especially if you're playing rhythm, they sound very flat.
