Title: WIP: Something Trek
Post by: Lt.Cannonfodder on April 05, 2004, 01:50:22 pm
What started as a simple test ended up as an real attempt at a decent image. Still WIP, but I decided to post it anyway.

Suggestions?

So am I. I suppose there isn't a single good thing in the image :rolleyes:

@Ashrak

AA is on low because it's WIP, DOF is being added and there isn't a single percent of ambient light :p I guess I'll be changing the direction of the main light. Hopefully it helps to solve Carl's clay effect.

@vyper Turnsky

The name is something my brother made up, I like it so it won't be changed :p

EDIT: Just lost the scene file due to a freak error, but I suppose it doesn't matter that much :(

I think the "clay effect" comes from insufficient maps.  It needs spec maps at least that are less uniform, more metallic to do it justice.  Also, it comes from a bumpmap that is too defined (as this looks to be) and there isn't a lot that can be done about that other than turning it down and losing that pseudo-detail that it tries to achieve.  Though those escape pods really should be modeled in to look good.  In fact, there is texture glitching all over the place.  Not that you made the model or anything, but you might well get better responses with a better mesh.

You might try using shadow maps instead of ray tracing.. something like 2048 for the map size and 30 for fuzziness...

True, but there is one slight problem. This is the best Sovereign available for LW, unless you are an expert converter or modeller, which I am not. Sad fact is, I rely heavily on the work of others to make my images :(

Yeah, a different mesh would help, but I still think it's a nice pic. Kinda reminds me of the old Star Trek: Armada intro almost.. just need another Sovereign thrown in.

I like the phasers, the impacts and the explosions.... I just take issue with that name. :p

You could try changing the actual surface properties of the sovreign so they're slightly mroe reflective (only just). Might save a lot of buggerin about.
