Title: The Matzah Strikes Back
Post by: Corsair on April 05, 2004, 04:56:50 pm
Yup, it's that time of year again. As of tonight, I can't eat bread. Or anything else with yeast that rises.
The chumitz has been purged and won't be back until Tuesday night.

Happy Passover everybody! :D

I wish you Happy Passover as you remember God's passing over of the Jewish households during that horrible night so many thousands of years ago, when the Egyptians lost their first born sons.

Why do you refrain from eating things that rise? Or have yeast or whatever? I fail to see the significance or reasoning some info would be helpful to me.

Happy Passover.

Well this is the time of year we celebrate the Jewish exodus from Egypt. So we do not forget. And in order to remember, we can only eat the same bread they ate in those times, Matzah. Which does not consist of any yeast. Its like a large flat cracker. Pritty good stuff actually.

At the start of the exodus, they were told effectively that there wasn't enough time to bring their yeast based foods (which would take time to prepare for the journey).

As a result, unlevened bread was eaten and during passover no levened bread is eaten as a symbol of the journey.

I'm probably a bit wrong with some of the details here though.

unleven bread is the bread of haste

Kazan, I don't know if you are aware of the story of the Exodus.

God called Moses to lead the Jews out of Israel.  When the Pharoh, Ramses I IIRC, refused Moses(his foster brother BTW) request, and mocking of God in the process, God sent a plague.  Moses asked that the Jews be freed, 6 more times IIRC, each request was denied and followed by a plague, each plague worse than the last.  When Moses last request had been denied, the final plague came.  In the form of the Angel of Death.  The Jews were instructed to coat their door frames with the blood of a freshly sacrificed lamb, the Angel passed over houses whose door was marked, and entered the houses that were not.  The first born of every creature, livestock and humans, died, including the Pharoh's own son.  This was the final straw, he released the Jews, and they were virtually chased from Egypt at the point of a sword.  The speed of the departure was such that they had to make the bread before it could rise.

The holiday, Passover, celebrates these events, especially the liberation of the Jews.  It is a joyous holiday, but the events it memorializes should not be forgotten, it is the point of the holiday after all.  BTW, the holiday is over 4000 years old.

Thank you Lib, but even athiests almost always know enough about Christianity to know the story reasonably well.  To recount it like you're preaching the children's sermon is a bit insulting, IMO.  It's insulting to me, and I'm an active member of my church.

So it's a partial re-enactment in celebration of a massacre?

In that case I'm destroying some US Navy ships on December 7th.

It wasn't a massacre, the Egyptians were aware of what to do to save their children, they just didn't do it.  A massacre is violent also, they just died.

liberator: i am well aware of the story - just the way you worded it made it sound like you were trying to insult him

Based on my previous statements, why would you think I was trying to insult him?

It's a Jewish Atkins diet. :D
I'll type the story out later....but Liberator's got the general idea.

And I believe it was Ramses II.

Matzah is good, at least the kind I had.  I'm not Jewish, but I am still doing it anyway.  'Tis quite fun.
