Apparently, even the act of signing up for the Beta and being rejected is enough for the good people at EVE to think I'm worth sending a free 14-day trial.
Only problem is, both my 'puters suck ass. Hopefully I'll be raking in enough cash for enough new components to supplement my current machine(s) (I know, you've heard it all before) allowing them to run EVE at amazing speed and quality, but before I go wasting the only sizeable amount of cash I'm ever likely to see in my life, I wanna know: Is EVE any good?
C'z even with the pay-2-play thing, $45 for 100 days is pretty damn good.
Anyway: Opinions?
-
If you're gonna play alone, it's gonna suck. Eve is good only when playing in group, like we were doing during the beta, or else it's gonna be boring as hell. But the sure thing is, you're gonna get an eyeful if you try it.
-
I played about 2 weeks in the beta, and EVE is essenitally a goregous, gorgeous economic simluator. People have been known to write their graduate thesis on the economic models of EVE.
That, and the universe is so huge, it takes about 10 hours to get from Point A to Point B, where A is your current locations and B is anywhere meaningful.
But don't let my experience get you down. I played for about a week and a half, and the majority of that time I spent playing the game the "wrong" way, because I'de be damned if any mere game was going to force me to play the way it was intended, and not the way I thought it was supposed to be work. See, this is why I never get far in RPGs.
-
If the thing that I'm intending to use to make ****loads of cash pans out, I'll have sufficient time and money to laze around for days on end, mining the belts of some ass-end-of-the-galaxy system with a team of Dutch and French lackeys who will be executed at the nearest possible convenience.

Eh, did I or darkage do something to you lately? Hmm. Justify your Dutch-hate :p
-
It'd be more of an offer than a sentence.
You, Kasperl, Tiara and Darkage could rake in some cash. But I'd kill you only when I'd found someone in-game who'd be willing to give me command of one of their battlecruisers in exchange for a cut of my piracy profits.
-
Pb is, the one owning a battlecruiser can rak up enough cash by himself.
Rah, anybody here played the last day of the beta? They dubbed that day some special name ( armaggedon I think ), and granted every player enough money to buy battleships and all the gear that goes with them. There were battleships everywhere, that was friggin impressive :)
-
Yeah by the end of the beta the HLP corporation had bought a battlecruiser IIRC. Nice piece of equipment, handled pirates fairly well. Game is obviously different now though, considering there's probably a fair few people running around in battleships.
I'm actually thinking of purchasing this now, I'm downloading the client as it is, right now. Same 14 day thing. Before I buy it though, I want to know if anybody around here is playing, or planing on playing this? The game is mostly a group activity and I'm not fond of rushing into a game with a bunch of people that for all I know like to smoke vinegar.
I was the leader of the HLP corporation last time around, but I know we don't have the number of people that are willing to play to do that again, and I most definately lack the time(at least until summer) to lead again. So, I'm figuring that if somebody around here has a connection to a halfway decent corporation, that perhaps I could join up with once I have subscribed.

I thought it was mind-numbingly boring. The combat didn't even have any interaction. The ships just circled around automatically, firing away. So guess what? That means big guns always win.
-
:hopping: :hopping: (adding extra energy pack to lasers and firing up bbq) what? where? Dutch haters? :ha: (http://www.dsv.nl/~raj/smilies/flamethrow1.gif) :nervous:
-
I got the same thing.. I played it a bit today.. luckily the HW clan I used to be in plays it...
an0n.. you'll still have to learn how to fly a battlecruiser.. you cant just hop in one and go...
-
I played the beta in the HLP corp... the community interaction bit was okay, but it was buggy, moving to systems with good buys took waaaaay too long (shopping runs were very annoying, good idea to make one person do it) and combat was pretty boring, mining even worse.
I think I'll play the trial anyway, to see if it's improved any. If there's anybody doing an HLP corp. I'll join up (for the 14 days). I doubt I'll end up buying the game unless it's improved a lot.
-
Well, supposedly you don't have to mine anymore. Killing pirates will give you bounties and the equipment they drop, plus the courier missions at the start I think will give you enough money to buy a decent fighting ship(well, I'm still doing the missions myself)
-
starting all over again from the crappy starter ship... no thanks.
-
There used to be an old old old BBS game called Galactic Empire that was pretty cool. You'd pilot a ship around and take planets. Other people connected to the BBS and playing then could battle it out with you or invade your planets... that was pretty cool. You could mine your planets to get enough money to upgrade your ship and get larger ones. Anyone remember that? And is Eve like that?
-
Nah, not like that at all. The whole game is basically an economical simulation. Extremely complex with corporation stocks and all the bells and whistles. So, you can do missions for agents, mine, kill pirates, BE a pirate, etc to make money. You train skills for your character to be able to use different weapons or fly different ships, things like that.
Corporations can own stations, but I don't think individuals can. So far I've seen about 3 player owned battleships, and that's in .7-1.0 security systems. Egghh...
Venom, it doesn't take long to get the best frigate. In fact, I'll have it by the end of today without a doubt. That's just 2 days. But then again, you were never really a team worker :p You and KMN, going off in the middle of nowhere  It was like pulling teeth getting you two to do anything.
-
Bah, we got more money that way than you did, trying to get rare ore and wasting all the money on the pirates in those areas :p
The way we did, we gathered enough money to get two battleships the day after the beta ended :p ( that's what killed us lol )
-
Well considering you spent twice as much time playing the game as anybody else, you should have gotten more money. But you really didn't. The corp had two cruisers and two industrials plus everyone had a punisher/equivelent ship. People kept blowing money on skills for another race's frigate skill though, I never figured out why.
And now, the rare ore is actually a lot more valuable than omber. Omber was apparently too good in the beta, so group activities are a lot more profitable.
Besides, killing pirates gives bounties now, so you're not really 'spending' money getting rid of pirates :p
And I'm stupid, I had enough money for a merlin right now, and I just blew it all on equipment. Lol. It's 10 hours till my skill is trained anyway *does more courier missions*
-
I didn't play that much, two or three hours a night, and we got that much money with only two people working, how many folks were there in the corp? :)
But if omber has been toned down, well, yeah, that kinds of won't work anymore :(
Nyway, I prefer mmorpg
"curses himself for missing both the WoW and lineage 2 beta"

I finally got rid of my n00binator ship.. (the Velator).. flying a Maulus now... I can actually defend myself from the Serpentis Corp mercs that seem to live in the Allamotte belts.....
-
i am flying a Imcus, doing some mining and training skillz. Atm i am in the Allenia system.
-
Any channel that you guys hang out in game at? I had recently tried the 10 ay trial, I was planing on logging on for a little while later while I procrastinate from studying.
Cheers!
-
Just the Corp channel.. :/ sorry...
could open up a HLP channel...
-
I'm about to make a corporation for HLP as soon as I get 1.6 million. Already got the skills necessary. The Corporation starting race is Caldari, so unless you got a preference, save me from training the Ethnic Relations a whole bunch by choosing Caldari.
My ingame name is Zerathis
-
ooo... A fresh corp for WOR to raid :P
