Title: Introduction for begginer
Post by: Otacon on April 06, 2004, 05:43:54 pm
Hi everyone!
I'm a new fan of FS. I've only make a single mission with FRED. I thought I can continue and make a little campain but I can't. Simply, because I don't know, how I can make my own weapons and ships.
As I saw, many fans have make their own and enable everyone to try them and use them in new mission.
After a little search, I didn't see one thread who explain how to create something and with which programs. I've only saw tips exchange between experienced people.
May be I'm blind or stupid! But it'll be a good thing, if someone make one thread for the begginers in FS. A thread who explain where to find best programs and how to use them or a link to some tutorials. :blah:

theres a little button that says [From the past 30 days] in the corner of the little forum box, switch it to [From the Beginning] and look on the very first pages, you might find stuff there

Wiki (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/fsdoc/index.php/HomePage) Here you'll find eveything you need to know about modding, and modding programs, I think anyway. :welcome: *I seem to do this alot* you could wait for karajorma to come and give you his FAQ in his sig.
EDIT: here we are, hope this helps some.:D Freespace Oracle (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/intro.html)

EDIT : JD beat me too it and said almost everything I had to say :D
Both of those links he gave you should help you a lot. (you'll find GE's VPView tutorial which I link to in the FAQ/Oracle especially helpful for making new weapons).

whatever you do, look at the SCP pages. that stuff allows you to do a lot more with game, and it has pretty images to top it off.

Flamethrowers are under the seats...
How does this go?

The exits are to your left and right. Flamethrowers are under your seats, but they are sometimes filled with water. If this occurs, please check the lockers for the old shotguns. Stay away from the admin's weapon lockers and the air vents. If you see a large, insectoid-looking creature inhabiting the latter, throw him a large piece of meat (preferably not yourself), and he will leave you alone. Thank you and have a nice day! :)

Yeah, the Shivan is Carl. We all seem to have our own views of things. But anyway, thanks for covering me...

Looking back, it seems I was here before beaming became common practice. Anyone know when it started?

Ok.
I saw that everyone have FS2 here. But not me and I can't find it in stores. Do someone know if I can download it from internet?

Sadly you're out of luck there. FS2 used to be available for download at the Home of the Underdogs site but when Interplay re-released it HotU pulled it rather than risk legel problems.
AFAIK Interplay still have copies available at $50 each but they only ship to the USA.
I've heard rumours of other FS2 rips available on the various file sharing networks but you're on your own there.

Hello!
Huh... So I can only buy and pay extra for air transport if I want get it? It doesn't matter, I should fine another way.
If I have the FS2 demo, can I upload it to have the complete game?

Huh!?!
I don't understand the page consacred to Modeling into Wiki documentation. There is an example of what I saw.
What's that? Is this normal?

Did you accidently click on view source or edit? Looks like you're seeing the HTML.
BTW My own FAQ contains much of the modelling info on the Wiki and some more stuff that I haven't moved there yet so take a look at it too.

Hello.
I don't know. I only click on modeling information into wiki and saw that.
Of course I'll take a look to you're FAQ.
See you later!

Hi everyone!
Where can I find a complete tutorial to create a fighter or like with every 3D programs? Especialy with 3Ds Max, Gmax, Truespace.

Max Sterling's tutorial on volitionwatch describes how to do that using blender but most people will warn you to stay away from blender if humanly possible.
With that exception I don't think there are any complete FS tutorials. Your best bet is to read the various modelling tutorials for each specific program and then read the FS tutorials once you've learnt how to model elsewhere.

OK. But why is blender so bad?

Post by: karajorma on April 20, 2004, 04:05:45 am
No idea. I did try it once and didn't have too much of a problem with it but that was when I was first learning to mod. I later moved on to truespace and found it much easier to work with than Blender so I stuck with it.

Blender's a pain in the ass to use. I've heard horror stories where you have to make everything poly by poly.
Anyway, try using Milkshape 3D or MAYBE TS5 if you want. BTW, FS2 is available on filesharing networks, I've accidentaly downloaded it more than once :D

That's the way you should make stuff if you want to be precise, though.
Blender never bothered me.... although max knocks seven shades of ****e out of it.

And if you want to go insane. Or you could just do it with general bits and extrudes, rather than building a sphere poly by poly.

I count extrude as poly by-poly, tho.

Post by: Unknown Target on April 20, 2004, 11:05:14 am
It's not really. For instance, you can extrude a clump of polies into a 3D shape, rather than laying down each vertex and connecting them.
