One of the preview screenshots from Lightspeed's nebula packs:

SJ Rupert? LOL
-
Take it again with lighting appropriate for the background, that's all it's missing... aside from weapon effects etc.. (less important).

I like the bright ambient lighting. It brings out the ship and the ooh-aah specularity. You're thinking from a realism point of view; I'm looking at it from an artistic point of view.
-
From an artistic point of view, I still think "oh, everything around it is blue and brown/orange. Why is it white?"
But nevermind that ;) I do think the shot could be recreated with some other features of the code included though... maybe a high poly Fenris engaging it, a dogfight going on... etc...
-
how long would a high poly Fenris last against a Sathanas?
you wouldn't even have time to catch a screenshot of it getting obliterated!
-
If you put it coming in from the rear quarters a Fenris would last long enough ;)
-
Put Lightspeed's red nebula in the background, its more visually pleasing and consistent.
-
Also, the Fenris could be made invulnerable - for the sake of a screenshot who cares if it should be vaporised before it gets close ;) The point was to show off the high-poly capabilities of the engine.
-
then get a hecate and a hatshetsput in the background with say, a sathanas (using my beam origins) and closer up put a high-poly fenris dishing it out to a cain or something, then have fighters in the front (my fighter trails) shooting at stuff, oh, and some high-poly asteroids too!
-
The only problem there is the ass ugly ambient lighting. Looks good otherwise. Right now it looks like a plastic model hanging in front of a photo of a nebula, because the lighting is wrong. If the lighting were corrected, it'd look like it was THERE and that would definately make the thing more menacing and fearsome, thus conveying the sense of the shivan threat.
In short, the lighting isn't just "not real", its "not artistic" in a very bad way.

Dark = evil
Sathanas = evil
=>
Sathanas:=dark
IMO

WRONG. There's an LRed back there.
-
No. One of these should be the splash screen.

Um, a nebula puts out very, very little light. A sun would amount for 99.9% of the light in such a scene. Even the brightest nebulae in the sky are around magnitude 4 (it's almost impossible to pick out objects dimmer than magnitude 6 without a telescope), but the sun is magnitude -28.6 (lower=brighter).

I second this one. The Sathanas in the first one just looks too crappy. It's really showing it's lower poly-ness, especially arount the head.
And did everyone forget how to use the lvlshot tags? Honestly.
-
What are they??
This is the first I've heard of them
EDIT: searched and found out:D
-
Nah, that Sath looks good, it definately reminds me of the one in the cutscene, totally awesome.

one of these most definitly
or this one http://www.fattonys.com/images/Upload/Screen6604.jpg

This looks absolutely stunning:

This looks pretty good too; almost cutscene quality:(http://nodewar.penguinbomb.com/fscz/screenshots/screen06.jpg)
But other than those two, I don't really like anything else in the thread.
-
:eek2:
You got to see this in-game.

Meh. Too dark.
-
well..
I like it:p
-
I think it depends what people want, some want one ship with one background and what have you.. keeping it simple. Others want lots going on, lots of detail and such. Personally I'm leaning toward the later of the two.
And Woolie, I thought we were looking at it from an artistic point of view? That's what you said, and this ship is white. Make it another color and really pimp the lighting system.
I do continue to "beg" for an action shot though, it'd be much more hitting as a shot.
-
wait for my eze, stick it with the high poly fenris over lightspeed blue nebula, et voila :p
-
Well, the Sathanas screenie is a bit odd because I had the default white sun in the mission, and ambient light was completely missing.
Nice screenshot though, JD :)
-
could you get a load of different shots and get it to pick one at random at start up or something?
-
Like in the credits?
-
Yeah, but without changing between them as it loads. Just pick one at random for each time you load the game.
That said, not sure how that would impact memory / size / load times etc.

YES!
That's exactly it. Why it is that people always put up shots of either one ship face either left or right and doing not much or they have several ships lined up doing not much?
If you really want to look at it artisticallly, you have to start thinking in terms of focal points, lighting, colour, space and energy. Even a single ship doing nothing at all can have energy and feel dynamic.
-
basically something like a nice render ... but ingame
-
(http://www.3dap.com/hlp/staff/setekh/christmas2k1.jpg)
But without the Christmas theme, the rocket cars and the rainbow beams. And of course in game
-
Hmm, colourful. The focal point is definitely the Hecate, unfortunately, the beams are so bright that they actually saturate to white and draw the eyes away from the focal point.
But it's colourful
-
Ooh, I like that first pic. Just goes to show you what a little anti-aliasing can do. :D
BTW, the high-poly fenris and herc models would also be great candidates for splash screens
-
Bump, I like this one if it didn't have the tageting bractets
(http://swooh.com/peon/jdjtcagle/JoshCagle334.pcx.jpg)
-
DUDE!! convert that think to a jpg you nit
a 1024x768x32bpp bitmap is 6 MEGS
-
Ohh!!...sorry about that
-
use a different beam where the intersection bug isn't THAT visible :p

Hrmmm, yes, ummm, indeed... :nervous: *hides*
-
Aww hey, it's very good for a Christmas card Steak  But perhaps low poly rocket propelled cars aren't the best way to show off the SCP? ;)
-
we should use my thruster glows and beam glows for that modern effect, and some of my hi-res textures too!
-
I vote for one of those paint-created moments ;p
-
stick the ezechiel in there too :P
-
I would like something like the Sathanas taking hold of a Fenris or a Deimos with the forward beam cannons. I've the image on my head :P
-
(http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/7416/e.jpg)
Hows this? Shows off my cleaner textures, my engine glows, somebody's superleet planet, and the HTL effect
-
HTL effect? what's that?
Also, I dont see any difference to the normal textures. BTW, what's up with those grey bobbles around the thruster effects?
look at the myrmidon in this really old screenshot for reference (click the image, it's a thumbnail):
-
the hi-res effect is barely noticeable, but you can see it in the blue paint and on capships in particular. its all WIPs anyway
And the HTL thing i mentioned was the specular effect, which isn't HTL at all (I read the stuff)
