Title: Since nobody makes single missions much anymore.
Post by: Petrarch of the VBB on April 07, 2004, 06:54:56 pm
I present, Taking Back Galahad, in which you have to recapture a station that has defected to the NTF, destroying its escort cruiser in the process.

This is the first time I've tried to make a proper mission, and succeeded. I usually get bored with all the testing the providing SEXPs for the various eventualities. But anyway, here it is, in what I like to think is a finished state.

http://swooh.com/peon/Petrarch/Bev01.fs2

If it gets enough positive feedback I may make a small campaign f it. And why not?

You have now given me reason to (a) download the last scp builds, (b) find my fs2 discs, (c) not do any degree work.

now, would you mind to try your hand at FREDding for FSCZ as well as testing?

200%. Give it voice files and you could call it a Volition mission. Truly amazing. If you do make a campaign, expect me to play it :D

I was impressed that you managed to get the "Directives" list on the HUD to work effectivly. I've only been able to do this once or twice, but never to such a high standard. Maybe you could give me a few pointers?

I put out some requests for people to V/A for it a month or two ago, and got a lot of responses. However, very few people actually recorded their parts, and I ended up with two people doing Terran Command.

If and when I get the campaign finished, I'll ask for voices then.

As for giving pointers, all I can suggest is perseverence. I spent about a week on the building of it, then another week on the testing and balancing, and adding the chatter.

I did have a text file of the plot for each mission in the campaign, but I must have deleted it in the Great Purge. :(

I made a single-player mission but no one played it except three people or less...

No, I'm tracking it through FedEX. I sure would like to know where my ****ing Power Supply is, however. But you know, people dont appreciate missions as much as they do campaigns, and as far as I'm concerned, you do what you do to please the community, and if they dont like it, try harder...

I played it (even installed the latest FSO to ensure it'd run) and I'm relatively impressed.  Chatter is sparce but good, and the mission is a bit on the slow side, but that's well explained.  My one complaint is that the Allied cruiser that comes in at the end pops up as a Posidon rather than an Aeolus if you click the icon.  Otherwise it was pretty flawless.

Flawless victory Petrarch... flawless...

By the way everyone makes it sound, I really really want to play this ASAP.

It does? Bugger.
Spent ages fixing all those.

Ah well, fixed and uploaded again.

Hmph. Having played it through myself again a few times, I've noticed that there's rarely anything left of Beta wing by the time their chatter comes round.
Bugger.

You know, first time I played through it every ship survived at least until the station is captured.  I think trying to take out the NTF cruiser immediately is the problem; though the objectives tell you to there isn't any evident priority on the cruiser over the fighters.  And it's in blindly attacking the cruiser that they all die.

I should point out that if you leave the Hawkins too long, another NTF cruiser arrives.

Too long and long enough to ditch the two fighter wings are two very different things.  A Leviathan with no AAA is easily handled by 2 wings of fighters (with Maxims, no less) once its escort is gone.  There doesn't seem to be a problem unless you specifically order your wingmates to attack the Hawkins.

EDIT: (Not that anyone's reading this at this point anyway) spoons? :p  NTF's making off with the valuables is it?

This actually gave me an idea... All without playing the mission ( ireally need to start bringing disks when I come into the uni labs)...

Hmmm... watch that space out there...

Good work, I love single missions that still use classic FreeSpace 2.  I wish there were more of them but it seems campaigns are the big thing now.

:welcome:

I tend to prefer campaigns missions myself because you can get a better feeling for the plotline.  It's harder to set the tone for the mission when it's a single mission.

Hey thank you for the welcome.  Yeah I guess I like campaigns better too.  Must be nostalgic for the old classic days.

Bam. It's not a very good one, as it's only a few seconds in. This is because I don't have the time to play through it, due to all hell breaking loose with car insurance. (Long story)
Anyway,

Major bumpage.

This is probably the longest of long shots, but does anyone still have this mission? I lost it ages ago in a format, but now I want to finish the campaign, with SCP-goodness.

If you do have it, email it to me and I'll love you for ever.

thought you had pretty much given up on FS Bev ?  :)

I've come back as all my other methods of shirking Uni work have dried up.  :p
And because of the shininess.

Anyway, I've made another mission to follow it up, followed by a cutscene, and now I've plotted myself into a corner, so who knows where it'll go next?
